We disconnected from the gas grid three years ago and wow did that feel great! Our transition was also piece by piece starting with domestic solar hot water, an eco-energy audit, upgraded insulation, then 6KW peak solar PV with feed in tariff, then the switch to an EV, and finally a ground source heat pump (-25C design temperature here and no local providers of cold climate air source heat pumps).

@@waqasahmed939 Sorry i should have been more explicit, i was referring to energy payback which is a matter of a couple of years for a well installed modern ASHP. financial payback is a longer prospect. but i have a ASHP with SCOP of 4 so it is costing less to run than gas. this saving will grow over the life of the heat pump as most predictions are the price gap between gas and electricity will continue to close. Partly due to the green levies being moved from electricity to gas. In addition i have Solar PV which does contribute to my savings. I was never realistically going to be able to produce my own gas at home! but agreed it not a quick financial win.

I’m on the way to being gas free. Solar panels and Tesla battery in 2020. EV and home charger in 2021 and by the end of July I’ll have an air to air heat pump system fitted, not only heat in the winter but cooling in the summer! Then I can take out all the current wet radiators. I’ll supplement the air to air with two infrared panels. Finally, once Mixergy’s new heat pump water cylinder becomes available gas will be gone. This is all down to Fully Charged/Everything electric. Your videos/blogs have been so informative, using experts to explain. Of course all the cost has been down to my savings. I’ve supplementing my electric generation with investment in Ripple energy as my solar panels can’t generate sufficient now to charge the car and run the house. We need a viable domestic wind generator!

We've just installed Air To Air. Hot water will follow. I don't get how many people just don't think about cooling, only heating. With the way our summers are going it's a no brainer to go with Air to Air

Absolutely... the only issue houses that use a combi-boiler for water and heating... going to air-to-air requires getting a separate hot-water system too (e.g. mixergy tank... if you have space - many new homes built with a combi don't have space - and reinforced floor - for a tank)

Not necessarily. Good design alleviates most of our cooling requirements. Don't forget that civilisation first began in hot countries, and humans have been cooling ourselves for thousands of years before the discovery of electricity. That includes retrofitting insulation + air tightness and an MVHR where required. My parent's house in Pakistan is quite cool without having AC. They do however have ceiling fans. The weather there is typically quite humid too just like the UK (but it's hotter) . They don't have an MVHR tbf

I would love to install a heat pump however my 9 year old house is fitted with 10 mm microbore plastic pipe work, as is so many new builds. Not a problem I hear you say! Well it is when all the pipes are beneath the first floor that’s covered in 8x4 sheets of chipboard and the ground floor rads are piped behind the dry wall linings up to the first floor. What really make me mad is our Benighted government has not regulated to stop this practice.. Currently there are 900 house being built around us fitted with gas boilers and piped in a similar way. Why on earth should anyone bother when our government can’t be bothered, instead they choose to argue about a bloody party that been an gone. I’ve fitted Solar panels drive electric and have battery storage, but the upheaval to re pipe our house let alone the cost is just ridiculous.

You can consider the air-to-air heat pump. Just so much better then the air-to-water, no radiator/pipe work issues, cheaper to run and gives you cooling in the summer as well.

@@petercsatai7019 Hi, thanks for the suggestion, I have installed 2 air conditioning units one in our kitchen dinner and one in our upper hall primarily for cooling in the summer. The drawback of them is blown air, hot or cold which we find uncomfortable that’s why we’ve not fitted one in our living room or bedroom. My wife finds them uncomfortable, but yes it’s an alternative that I’m sure some people will find suitable. It still leaves the question of why on earth if our government is serious about reducing fossil fuel consumption it hasn’t legislated to stop the ridiculous practice going on in the building industry of installing systems that are extremely difficult to convert over to air to water heat pumps. Why also is the method of pricing electricity still tied to fossil fuel when a lot comes from cheaper renewable energy and why is there still a higher tax on electricity than gas. The government speaks with a fork tongue!

i transitioned 2 years ago, i dont have a car and live in a small flat, so it was a lot easier and cheaper. all i needed was to switch to an all renewable power provider, install a small air-heatpump for heating and cooling below the window and get an electric warmwater-boiler. something around 1000-1500 bucks all told.(i did the installations myself) it payed for itself in savings already.

@@markstockton571 91 to 93%. A combi boiler uses very little energy for a shower for example. If you use electricity or solar you will need a cylinder to store water again. There are electric combi boilers but running costs will be higher

Always good see examples. We’ve also gone piecemeal - although for the hotwater I diy’ it via hot water tubes and a Willis heat arrangement to reuse my hot water tank but solve the “heat only from the top” problem.

We sorted out a good energy tariff, then bought the EV, followed by the batteries. The batteries have almost paid for themselves over the past couple of years, and the car has saved more than the cost differential of buying a petrol 'equivalent'. Next up will be solar PV, and then maybe a heat pump, if we can obtain planning permission for them. Our experience has indicated to us that buying the batteries first would be the best option, if a really good electricity tariff can be found. Some suppliers have some really good ones; way below standard tariffs, if you dig around for them.

I struggle with where to find gas replacement options locally and for apartments. There’s no space for heat pumps. Also the guy said that you didn’t need to insulate an old home as much as people think for heat pumps to viable - but that is what some installers are telling people.

I stopped using gas fully last year - I simply got the meter disconnected as I wasn't willing to pay the standing charges for my low consumption as the standing charges were the bulk of my cost (as it is with the RIDICULOUS electricity SC now). So my reliance on gas wasn't eased by transitioning, it was eased because I simply couldn't justify paying for it. Needs must as they say.

Like you, I had the gas disconnected earlier this year when I moved into my 1950's bungalow, as the 1950's boiler was condemned. I am extending and fully insulating, then solar panels, ASHP, MVHR, battery, underfloor heating and Mixergy tank. My journey started in 1917 when I got my first electric car. For now I just have to freeze, with a couple of electric heaters and coal fire in the evenings, I am for ever watching my smart meter.

It's definitely not a 360st ft house (as mentioned at 0:17 into the video. Other than that it's interesting to hear his experience. We built our house in 2020 and although we don't consider it to be an ECO house it is pretty good. We put in more insulation than was required and we spent a lot of time finding the best solar panels, batteries and heat pump for our needs. As part of the deal from the supplier we also got a Zappi car charger installed, even though we didn't have an EV at the time. We also got a three phase supply installed to future proof the house. It's only 2 bedrooms/bathrooms and is about 150 sq.m. We're all electric but our monthly bills are about £60. However this includes charging an EV, running the heating etc and having a hot tub. Having a battery attached to the Solar PV has been fantastic. Over the last 12 weeks I've been running on sunshine with a little bit of Top-Up for the batteries during the cheap rate period on my Octopus Flux tariff. I'm confident that I'll be doing this for another 8 - 12 weeks. The comments about getting the right installer are very pertinent. Our installation was done by absolute cowboys and constant supervision was needed to ensure the systems were correctly installed. Luckily I knew enough to make sure they did it right. I'm constantly trying to dispel all the negativity and myths in the press about these technologies but its an uphill battle. I had a trip to North Wales over the weekend and was told by several people, on good authority that there were very few chargers in Wales. However over 5 days and 600+ miles I always managed to find a rapid charger at a reasonable price so I didn't get anywhere near running our of electrons I love the Everything Electric Show and it's sister channels - keep up the good work

I had a gas boiler installed about 3 years ago on a scheme where it only cost me a couple of hundred pounds. Of course it was that cheap because I have to pay for gas to use it. Will heat pumps ever be offered on these types of terms as there is no fuel to consume? I know there are loads of solar schemes but there are loads of caveats. Also older houses require a great deal of improvement to their heat loss, before a heat pump is even effective! It’s all good stuff and would love to have it but I’m skint!?

To go all the way in one step is of course expensive. If you're on a tight budget the best thing to do is probably start by improving the house insulation, which will pay back in a few years. This will also enable a smaller heat pump and fewer or no radiator changes if and when you have the budget to do it. PV panels should also have a relatively quick payback of 6-8 years.

Then when you eventually get the heat pump you probably won’t have to change your radiators.

@@fydstar I live in a Victorian mid-terrace too. Having shared walls on either side really helps! Bit by bit over about a decade I laid more fibreglass in the loft, put solid kingspan insulation under the suspended floors and fitted insulation- backed plasterboard on the outer walls. A lot of work, but it has transformed the house. Added some PV panels which have paid back now. Despite being a heat pump installer, I haven't fitted one yet.

Just to correct you.......heat pumps don't run on thin air...they consume electricity. They can be as efficient as 3:1 (people quote other things but watch for the ads from law firms in the next few years that say 'Have you had a heat pump installed in the last five years?'....as Vaillant and others get their arses sued). That's why electricity costs on average three to four times as much as gas. 'They' (the WEF etc) are going to do all they can to increase the price of gas to force people to switch, but there was a good showing of people who didn't pay this last year to make them think twice.

We fixed it last November and saved 40 pounds a week on our heating bill runing on gas alone, we paid £100 for a chinese diesel heater and installed it on the outside wall of our homne and we run it on kerosene at 80 pence per litre and it burns 2 litres a day. very cheap smokeless heating . we actually looked into having a heat pump put in and it worked out that there is not enough ground heat stored in the ground to run the dam thing efficiently so we were told honestly that it wouldnt be worth buying one in our area and it would use a lot more electricity trying to keep the house warm than it would if sufficient ground temperatures were available in the winter. Nice to meet an honest installer for once.

Well if your set up is that the battery only uses 70% of its capacity, then you could be looking at a life time of up to 40 years. The solar is the same time frame, the inverter is the only weakest link in the system, so you might be expected to replace that every 3 to four years, which is also the cheapest item in the system. So you payback should be well within that 40 year time frame. Your as good as set for life, you cannot get that with anyother energy system like gas or oil. Our Solar system was paid off inside 4 years, I DIY it. The battery should see me and the misses to our grave, and the Inverter was replaced for a dual system. The battery will take the longest to pay back around 10 years, possible sooner due to the energy crisis, and the Inverters should last at least 5 years, which tends to leave them at break even. Don't wait to win the money invest a 5 year loan and win that way would be my advice!!

Don't think of it in terms of 'pay back', consider it an investment that pays a dividend. Skip the battery and the heat pump for now and get a PV system. A small inverter, 6 or 8 panels will set you back less than 2 grand - this make a huge dent on your energy bills especially March through September.

@@mb-3faze The problem is that I'm a fairly low user of electricity as it is, so the savings would not be anywhere near as much as a whole family might get with their usage stats. I'm also in work all day during the week, so without a battery, all that generation will be going back to the grid and I won't actually benefit much from it. One option I looked at was to do it the other way around - get the battery installed first. I drive an EV and use the Octopus Go tariff, so could charge the battery from the grid overnight at a cheap rate and use it during the day. That would also bring down my electricity costs, but I still need to run the numbers to see if it is properly viable. The other issue I have is that my house is very small, and finding somewhere to put all this stuff would definitely be a challenge!

It's interesting that most people go with EVs first and THEN solar panels I got solar panels first because I wfh most of the time, and simply don't drive that much. If I drive, it'll be to the supermarket, to the park and ride scheme to hop on to the tram OR to go to my parent's house about 40 miles away I wonder what the difference is between attitudes of those who live in a bit city and those who don't. Equally, I wonder if it's different if you've got a terraced house instead vs a semi detached in my parent's home town which isn't a big city at all

An interesting episode to see the technologies working in an average home. However, I'm a little disappointed to not be able to see the total cost of the installations. Whilst I agree that generally renewable technology is better, the cost of capital is nearly always ignored in these types of videos which is an important aspect. Once you've spent the money, whilst you get some savings in running costs, your capital is gone, and your various eco efficiencies become a depreciating asset. Would the homeowners have been better to leave their funds invested and use the income generated to offset potentially higher living costs? They could even have invested in purely eco causes if that was a goal too, but then without giving up the capital.

Bear in mind their hot-water tank was (from the sounds of it) failing, so they'd have to replace that anyway... so the cost of 'going green' would be a relatively minimal overhead. With current 'leccy prices, panels pay for themselves in 6-10 years (depending on number and placement, etc)... for reference, I have a slightly smaller setup on a 3-story townhouse (more expensive to install)... cost ~12k total. For me, the heat-pump has been the hardest one to justify (as my current heating system is working fine)...

I have installed 2.460 kW of solar DIY with an estimated pay back in approx. 4 years. However at present to install a heat pump even with SCOP of 4 and electric at 40p kWh works out at 10p kWh of heating. At present central heating oil is 70p/L, this gives you 11.25 kWh of heating. Even with efficiency losses say 10 kWh working out at 7p per kwh of heating. So a heatpump present does not make sense.

I know exactly how much solar energy you get in winter only a fifth of the rated power, not enough to cover the normal day time use of energy that's before you use any for heating. @everythingelecticshow how was this home owner affected by having a mixergy tank, before installing the heat pump. Ive been told by Octopus, that if I have a mixergy, then I cannot get the government grant? Are they having me on, advice would be appreciated

Not true. I’m just about to have a ASHP installed by Octopus. When they initially quoted my install I asked about having a Mixergy tank and they told me I had to have a Daikin tank to match the ASHP. That was until I went to Fully Charged Live North last month and there was a talk with the head of Daikin and head of Mixergy on stage and they proudly announced their systems work together. So I then went to the Daikin stand, the Octopus stand and the Mixergy stand and got them to all agree it’s possible (so convenient, having them all in one place!)… My install is imminent, so thankfully I got that agreed just in time. It hasn’t affected the government grant on my quote.

In Australia you do realise that one third of homes in Australia have solar panels on the roof as for EVs its a slow but us Australians do like our petrol and diesel vehicles there a couple of EVs around but in Australia they are expensive compared to petrol cars

Can you please do a video regarding converting from an OIL-fired Boiler ? Most people in rural areas who are off the Gas Grid are stuck with these disgusting contraptions, so please can you tell us if there are any differences in converting from them ? Thanks !

The installation process for a heat pump is fairly similar whether it's replacing oil or gas. All the usual considerations like checking heat loss and radiator size to work with lower flow temperatures still apply. I'm a heat pump installer & we have a disproportionate amount of enquiries from people with oil, presumably because people hate the things. There's an additional cost to take the tank away, but then this does sometimes offer a location for the heat pump.

@@bimblinghill Thanks for that ! I still think it would be a good idea to do an ‘Oil’ version, as the temptation for anyone with oil heating who might be only vaguely interested in converting, is to see all these ‘Gas’ videos and think ‘So What’s that got to do with ME ?’

@@tomsdaddy it's a fair point. People underestimate how many places are oil heated. More CO2 emissions than gas and generally more expensive.

We had an old Combi Oil burner here in mid Wales, which had been repaired many times the last repair was to the water jacket. We new this was the last winter for this boiler and researched the heck out of an ASHP system. 2 years ago we opted for a LG Therma V 9kw monobloc ASHP. The monoblock means its all contained in one single unit outside, (the alternative is a split system) so making the swap over much easier and quick, all done in a day. We did'nt worry about the the size of rads as they all need replacing anyways, and so we may end up with underfloor heat system, which is ideal for an ASHP system. So far we had no issue, it only got noticably cooler when the out side temp dropped to -8c last Dec for about a week. Otherwise its done the job.

I definitely would not want that tombstone like Air 2 Water heat pump sitting out the front of my house - & that's coming from a guy that's spent 47 years in the HVAC industry. No chance of me having an A2W heat pump anyway because my gas CH system has 10mm microbore pipework all over the place & the cost & upheaval to replace it would not be cost effective. When the time comes I'll be looking at an Air to Air system which can cool as well as heat & probably an "all in one" HP HW tank - Mixergy or another make. Like others have said, how much has all this cost & how was it funded? I've just had a solar battery system installed & a used EV is next on the list after we sell my wife's current ICE car but the rest will have to wait until we get a lottery win or Rishi trebles the state pension payments. This "going Green" lark costs a lot of money.

Not necessarily. I had 2 radiators (out of 11) with my heat pump install. One replaced a towel rail type radiator with a solid vertical radiator taking the same space. The other replaced a normal panel radiator with one the same size but about 3 cm thicker to give an extra convection surface.

Yes wonderful - But please let me know how much all the costs. He mentions the cost savings, but no mention of the up front costs to instal the home equipment, and the interest charges to service that loan... The payback time is never mentioned.... No wonder his wife is fed up with all the technology !!

You do what you can to fit your bugget, I'm a postie on a crap wage, it took us 6 years to own a 2 second EV's, 4kw Solar array, a 32.5kWh battery storage system and an ASHP. Not to mention a 5,000L rainwater harvesting system for under £1,200. Nothing is in possible if you put your mind to it!

It's difficult, for all the cost that I will and mostly a lot of people will find with new pipe work roof needs to be Repaired and the electrics upgrade the consumer Box and. increase The fuse size from 60am to 100am The wire tiles need to be changed.A lot of Money I don't have.😢

Well this sounds like you've got a 100+ year old property thats in need of some seroius repairs. Sell it and move to a south facing property and get a loan! The whole system will be paid off in ten years or sooner if there is another energy crisis, and at the rate we are burn oil thats not going to be long!!

On the consumer box if the tails are 16 mm cable Need to be changed to 25mm To handle 100amp The pipework in my home is 10mm not like Normally 15mm I have a few radiators that need to be upgraded to give more projected heat. The house is a 100 years old, so the roof is a 100 years old.

Id love to move over to a fully electric house but where do you get the money for this. PV and heat pumps are just ridiculously expensive. I have an EV and it's been fantastic. We will always have EVs going forward but all the other items are just unobtainably expensive.

PV is very affordable these days and heat pumps are a lot cheaper than an EV.

You can still get a grant for about £5k towards your first ASHP its worth in vestigating. I tend to think of it as an investment in my future energy bills. We got our solar installed as soon as we moved in, 6 years ago, followed by 2 second hand EV's a year after that, and 2 years after that the ASHP, which we were able to get a £7k grant for which almost wipe out the cost of having it fitted. Then came the energy crisis, for us there was no crisis, that the difference it makes. The longer you wait the longer it takes to get the win win score! Only down side is that here in Wales under the Labour government we could now get it all for free! Sometimes waiting helps. Swings and round about I guess.

Heat pumps will go down in price. There's no reason why they should be more expensive than a gas boiler other than very high demand across Europe and that they aren't being produced at scale yet unlike gas boilers. I suspect that all that will change over the next few years

@@nickflynn666 Actually, from what I've read, the bottleneck is the lack of qualified fitters for heat pumps as much as the supply of heat pumps themselves. I watched a video of a German installer saying that his little business simply can't keep up with demand, and his two sons training will take another 18 months to be in a position for them to do installations unsupervised. He was saying that German educational institutions weren't prepared for the explosion in demand and this is limiting the numbers of installations able to be done.

@@nickflynn666 Their COP will hopefully go up too which will seriously encourage adoption If you can get a COP of 4 in the depth of winter you're golden. People also do readily dismiss that the COP being 5 doesn't matter for most of the year and they're only partially correct. I've noticed that even with using zero central heating, I'm still pulling 10 kWh a day just for showering + hot water in general. Let's pretend it's just useful for 8 months. In 8 months, I'll have used 2430 kWh just on hot water + showering. At current Octopus tracker rates that's £121.50 (5p/kWh) At current Octopus tracker electricity rates and a COP of 5, that's 486 x 0.2 ie: £97.20 That's not a *huge* saving but it is a saving.

Capital investment required? Cheapest Zoe £29200. ASHP with new rads after grants £8000? 4kW Solar array £5000? Mixergy DHWT installed £2500? Adaptive charger for the car £2000 installed. When time of use tarrifs are 7.5p/kWh, home battery storage should be the first thing to consider. Oh hang about, these contain another x00kg of expensive metals. The world has gone bonkers. Wish the Everything Electric Show was ever so slightly balanced... guess the name sets the tone!

So all you need is an EV, Solar panels, a Mixergy installer nearby (I didn't) and what looks like a big house that can fit 14 solar panels. Not a big investment then. Imagine saving 600 pounds a year - so lets say all of this stuff cost 6000 pounds - ROI after 10 years. but of course it cost much more than that.

I'd say the entire cost would be closer to 10-12k but it's not always about ROI. It's about reducing reliance on fossil fuels and starting to get some energy independence.

A heat pump isn’t suitable for every property. The cost of adding radiators not to mention the massive electricity bill ( Heat pumps are greedy) can make it uneconomical.

It'll be a massive challenge to add heat pumps to terraced houses My parent's house might be able to take a heat pump, purely because they've got a cellar but a lot of terraced houses don't have that or they've converted their cellar into a kitchen / bedroom

There is really no alternative (except for district heating). There are plenty of compact heat pumps already available that fit on the roof, or that don’t have an external unit.

How does this make sense for anyone except the truly climate altruistic? The savings to upfront expense cost for this has got to be pennies to the dollar if not pennies to the thousands of dollars. It will take decades to recoup his cost if he will ever recoup it since if he has invested the upfront cost he would come out far ahead of whatever paltry savings he is achieving per month. Financially at least.

everything in life is relative - the negative environmental impacts of fossil fuel use at each stage of drilling/mining, refining, transportation and burning are proportionally much greater than those from lithium mining/production/usage. there is a good article on this topic by bloomberg new energy.

The mining to get the tens of tons of clay bricks which the house is made of probably does more damage then a few kilograms of lithium. There's probably also tens of tons of concrete making up the foundations of the house as well.

Lithium mining currently accounts for 0.04% for all the mining done world-wide. The stuff that we mine the most in the world, strangely given all the scrap yards there are, is iron.
