Raccoons are very territorial. One of the reason animal control doesn't relocate raccoons is because the already-established raccoons will kill it. It's also unfair to the established raccoon community, it throws off the hierarchies and destroys the peace and causes even more unnecessary injuries. He didn't save its life. They say it's kinder to euthanize it. They use the scent glands from male raccoons to evict female raccoons from under houses if they've made a nest. If a male finds babies they'll kill them, so if she smells it she'll move her babies.

Good man, Kenan. That you have so much compassion with the raccoon. For sure you can be angry with them but then you see this trapped animal in fear and you come down and have the awareness that its nature and that these raccoons are also fighting for their surviving. I really appreciate your attitude and hope that some people see that and make the same decision even if they are in grief for their pets

We had the same problem while conducting a Diamondback Terrapin study in a nature conservancy on LI. The raccoons would dig up the nests and also eat the newly emerged hatchlings. The people running the preserve wouldn’t trap and relocate them but in hindsight it probably wouldn’t have mattered. The area was a wild estuary surrounded by lots of woods, probably home to innumerable little “bandits” breeding out of control! I eventually devised a constructed a “stove-pipe” shaped, hardware cloth “cage” that would be dug down over the new nests. They were buried too deep for the raccoons to dig up and the holes were just big enough for the hatchlings to get through. We also wound up incubating quite a few clutches indoors. All in all our efforts were successful as the number of terrapins increased greatly and continues to do so in the greater NY coastal areas.

I am extremely sorry and sad that this happened to your turtles. But I'm also absolutely glad that you did not kill the raccoon and instead relocated him. And it's so terrible, but we all learn from this as well. I know I will keep this in mind when it's time to start work on my property. I am glad you are the way you are and have such compassion for all animals even considering what happened to yours. This is one of many many reasons that you are my favorite KZbinr. I grew up in the country and we always had problems with Raccoons eating our fruits and vegetables out of our garden. My dad ended up playing a radio 24/7 in the garden on a talk radio station and believe it or not, it worked and we never had a problem with them again. It’s worth a shot in your case.

Sorry for the loss of the turtles and glad you're showing compassion for the culprits. Can't really be angry with an animal for doing what they're meant to do. Keeping animals always come with risks. You took precautions you thought were good, but unfortunately it wasn't enough. Hopefully the added precautions you've added will prevent this happening again.

Proud of you Kenan. That has to be such a difficult decision to make as you think about all the turtles that were attacked but you nailed it, it’s so sad to lose such a huge part of your swamp of turtles but these guys are doing what nature told them to do. It’s hard to stay alive and they want to live too. I really hope the extra security measures help detour the raccoons and you don’t have any more casualties 🙏🏼

Sorry for your loss! Idk if anyone has suggested it yet or not but you can buy these things that you put on your fence and if your fence ever loses power then these things start flashing. You’d need one for each different fence controller but I don’t think they’re very expensive at all. Definitely worth having since you’d see the flashing light easily! Let’s hope that’s all of the trespassers hiding out on your property!

Hey Kenan, I really hope you got the last of those rascals. I'm truly sorry for all your loss in the past several days. I had a question about tortoise care. I have a 1 and a half year old sulcada that I'm keeping outside (I live in Southern California) but we are having a bit of an ant problem. I heard cinnamon can help but didn't know how Tortoises would react? Obviously looking for natural remedies. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you for continuing to show compassion for wildlife. I get wanting to protect your pets when you love them as family. But people also have to accept that wildlife exists. Its hard finding a middle-ground with wildlife, but wildlife doesn't see property lines as before a house was built that area would have been the home of wildlife. Its nice seeing someone who doesn't turn immediately to killing wildlife at a time when people are slowly killing wildlife by taking away their territory.

That said, , I’m glad you have the compassion to get rid of them without having to kill them. Like you said, they’re just trying to survive.
