Hey Kenan, I own Rodent and pest control company in Los Angeles , been trapping raccoons for 37 years, your trap is to small, it will trap a small raccoon, but a large one will not go in it, use cat food in a can, fish flavor, the pull tab type, but don’t completely remove the top, open it just enough for the raccoon to smell it, he will work on it to get the food then trip the trap. Get a larger trap, remember, there is going to be a lot more raccoons, never just one or two

My condolences for the loss of your turtles. That is awful to see and thank you for having the courage to show the reality of being an animal guardian. A few practical tips: Get a bigger trap, have more than one and keep it away slightly from the perimeter you're trying to protect. Raccoons will always go for the easy food over the more challenging. Also, try using a motion sensored sprinkler system around the enclosure. Raccoons are flighty animals and they, like cats, don't really like getting wet. The best advice I can give you is Stop Putting things on your fence line! This is a really important one. Having plants touching your live fence will reduce the power of the fence. It doesn't matter how much power goes into the fence if there are plants earthing it. Keep your head up and please don't punish the animal for being an animal. You have options, exhaust those first before taking your anger out in the wrong way.

Also, you can use sardines in water.. the smellier the better for trapping. You don’t need to cover the trap in fronds. It’s almost easier if they can walk around the trap and smell the bait and then go around to the opening and go in. Maybe sprinkle some drops of the smelly juice around the outside of the trap to lure them in. @cattfishing3 жыл бұрын
With truly honest due respect. That is incorrect. They dont always hunt,kill, or eat out of necessity. They do kill because they can, it's there, and the temptation for a little snack is there. There has been several recent(within the last few years) studies done on this topic as well that I will happily try and look for to provide my sources as I dont remember right off the bat and It was a a couple years ago when i read about them in school) anyway, they have found that a majority of raccoons living in human populations are almost never starving and has constant access to food either directly from humans, or indirectly from humans, by being fed by, garbage cans, compost bins and piles, and live food sources of pets, livestock, crops/gardens that attract other smaller prey animals etc. so more than likely they aren't poor starving animals just desperately in need of food. Regardless, they have been many times over to also kill for the heck of it where more often than not, they dont even eat the animal they killed or they eat a small bit and leave the rest to waste. When an animal eats out of necessity, they will either eat the entire animal, or if too much to eat in one sitting, they will take the carcass, or bury it to save and est for later. Given that there were several raccoons here, and all had just legs eaten/torn off, it is more likely they were not at all killing out of necessity. With that, it is still animals doing what they are programmed to do, which is understandable. But just like they have every right to do what they are naturally programmed to do, we have the right to stop them from doing their thing on our property. In nature, animals have territory, dens,young, food source, etc that they will kill to protect. There is no reason we cannot do the same. We are not some random aliens that showed up out of nowhere taking over animals home. We were here along with them and we too are a part of nature just the same. I already left a similar comment above and would like to apologize again for my English and grammar. I am working on it and hope I was able to make some sense of my rambling.lol I should add that when i say animals will kill to protect their territory etc. I am NOT advocating for him or anyone to kill any animals that come onto your property. Especially when there are other options such as catch and relocate etc. But, there are instances where sometimes its necessary or the only best option.

It’s tough, because I’d understand why it’s so frustrating. The raccoons caused a lot of damage, going after multiple turtles. Relocating would make sense, as long as the area wouldn’t have populations of endangered turtles (or other endangered wildlife that it could feed on) that would be jeopardized. If that’s not a viable option for some reason, and nothing else can occur, killing it might be the better way. If the traps aren’t working to begin with and he would have the chance to kill it then and there, I would understand if Kenan took that chance.
@PinkBlue_Spood3 жыл бұрын
@@3030toby I think the decision is more difficult because it took bits and pieces of many turtles, rather than one or two. It really makes the situation worse, with how fast it’s killing the turtles. You’d also have to ensure it wouldn’t negatively affect threatened or endangered populations of animals it may prey on, along with ensuring that someone else wouldn’t be effected similarly, if it was relocated (which likely is possible, but depends on the area of course).

Not really true at all...depending, but the only ones like that are where there are so many raccoons due to tourism, camping, etc. Most of the time, chase them off, they will find somewhere else to go...but part of that is limiting their access to food. Which the turtles are food. They love eating things from the water. You need to limit their access, not endlessly kill raccoons until you or your ponds perish. Unless you eat them, then I guess kill them. But don't kill things for the sake of killing them. That's some dumb relic of a time that isn't relevant anymore. Killing is rarely needed, and nearly never the solution. Hunting? Cool. Humane pest control? Cool. Killing raccoons that are outside killing your outside small animals is something that is a you issue, not a raccoon issue. Enclose your turtles if you want them safe from predation. If not...then don't bitch about it and go on a killing spree as some form of revenge. Solve the problem....don't become one.

If I saw someone killing raccoons just because they didn't want to enclose their animals, I'd walk up, grab the dead animal, and demand they gut it and eat right then and there. How about raccoons kill us for getting in their freaking way? WE are the inconvenience, not the animals that make up the ecosystems we rely on to survive. Animals don't need us....we need animals. I now have a pretty racoon proof set up, but like your tragedy, most of my losses come when I have an electric fence problem, or their automatic doors don't close. The racoons will come in, eat the chicken heads, and sometimes eat the breast meat, 90% of the bird is wasted. My daughter's completely understand the racoons are just doing their jobs, but it doesn't stop them from actively helping me trap/dispatch of any we happen to catch. Very sorry for your losses brother, my family still sheds tears over some special pet hens that we've lost over the years. Multiple traps, I found canned wet cat food, smoked oysters, tuna, small bits luring them into the trap, with the payload of bait in the very back of the trap. Great idea to cover with leaves, if they can grab, lick the bait through the sides or the front they will.

Take all your turtles and bring them inside somewhere until you get the raccoon out of there. It’s kind of a lot of work and they’re going to be stressed out but it needs to happen and I would suggest not only having the traps out there but possibly putting some other easy food items so that they’ll eat that instead of the turtles. And of course if you do that then they won’t be going in the cage but you might be able to set up some kind of a pit with a bunch of really yummy food inside of it in someway where once they get in they can’t get out. This way if it’s more than one you can catch a bunch at one time. Maybe it’s a dumb idea but I would at least move the turtles inside as best as possible. And obviously if they’re in the water that’s kind of a really difficult situation to get all the turtles but I would get was many as you can

You're in a situation where you're kind of stuck. Turning the perimeter fence back on will keep more raccoons from coming in but it also keeps the ones that were already in from leaving. If they get hungry enough, you'll have to watch the other animals as well. Not slinky or Buttercup and probably not the Lagatha or Pinky, but the smaller lizards for sure. I don't know if you have security set up out there, but some kind of "Ring" type system that notifies you when there's movement in the yard, which will allow you to take action in real time instead of reacting after the fact. You're right. While keeping our pets outside is very beneficial to the animal bit it on the keeper to keep the predators out. I'm in 100% agreement, that rehoming is the way to go. Those raccoons are only trying to survive, same as you and me. As a species, they were here first. It's not their fault that we are reducing their living space and forcing them to interact with us. But we can't allow them to be killing the animals we take under our protection either so, relocation is the best option.

So sorry for your losses, Kenan! I Echo the suggestions for a livestock Guardian dog. Raccoons are intelligent and creative and will not fall for a lot of traps. Consider connecting with the livestock Guardian communities ( there are several on Facebook) who can recommend a few breeds that will flourish in the Florida climate. I'm also from Long Island and my guardian livestock breed was a Kuvasz. I lived upstate New York at the time. Even as a youngster, she quickly learned what was family on our property and kept everyone and everything safe. But Kuvasz, brilliantly smart, dedicated to protection, yet gentle and trustworthy with babies, are rare, and a double-coated breed developed in Hungary and I don't know if they would thrive in the Florida weather. And if you do decide a Kuvasz, get two. They will divide Sentry duties seamlessly and one will nap while the other guards. Guaranteed that they will keep raccoons away. Also human predators and any wolves that might turn up. And by the way, Tadyatha, our Kuvasz almost never barked. Low deep growl when she felt there was a threat nearby to alert us.
