That’s basically how Diddy made his whole career, “re-doing” hit songs. My mom always said, it’s super easy to redo something that was already a hit.

I prefer to say “stole” this particular song.Diddy asked permission from The Police(Sting)but was told a very stern NO.The thieving jerk used it anyway.He did have to pay hefty royalty fees to Sting,but to use someone’s material when you’ve been turned down is a total dick move in my opinion.

The lead singer "Sting" has a HUGE solo career. Check out "Desert Rose"! Yes, it was P Diddy. He remade this as a tribute to Notorious B.I.G. Yes he gave credit. Sting actually sang the tribute with him at an award show.

Yeah P Diddy ‘borrowed’ basically the whole damn song. Didn’t ask if he could before he released it. Paid a lot in royalties to Sting and had to give him writing credit. But then they performed it together a few years later so all water under the bridge now and Sting liked Diddy’s version to honor Biggie.

Sting wrote it when he found out his (first) wife was cheating on him - hence the "every vow you break" line. One of my favorite songs ever.
@snowflakehunter
@snowflakehunter 3 жыл бұрын
Here is the reality...This is an actual quote from sting: "I woke up in the middle of the night with that line in my head, sat down at the piano and had written it in half an hour. The tune itself is generic, an aggregate of hundreds of others, but the words are interesting. It sounds like a comforting love song. I didn't realize at the time how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control". Source: www.smoothradio.com/features/every-breath-you-take-police-lyrics-meaning/
@snowflakehunter

@Shame nolan They can interpret it any way they wish. This is true. But they would be wrong. Sting clearly states the meaning and why he wrote it. Only the artist can reveal the true meaning.

@Phil Lee 1983 interview with the New Musical Express, Sting explained: "I think it's a nasty little song, really rather evil. It's about jealousy and surveillance and ownership."
@Gustavae
@Gustavae 3 жыл бұрын
@Phil Lee “I woke up in the middle of the night with that line in my head,” he said, “sat down at the piano and had written it in half an hour. The tune itself is generic, an aggregate of hundreds of others, but the words are interesting. It sounds like a comforting love song.” Then he said: “I didn’t realise at the time how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, of surveillance and control.” There is the admission: “I didn’t realize at the time.” And “.. I think I was thinking…” In another interview from 1991, he was open about this shift, saying the song offers “no release of emotions or change in the point of view of the protagonist. He is trapped in his circular obsessions.” Yes. Then comes the key admission: “Of course,” he says, “I wasn’t aware of any of this. I thought I was just writing a hit song, and indeed it became one of the songs that defined the ’80s, and by accident the perfect soundtrack for Reagan’s Star Wars fantasy of control and seduction.” There is confirmation that the sinister reading of this lyric was never part of the songwriter’s intention. So it does not qualify as the true story behind the song. It is a revised story. It was, as he said, not intended as sinister while writing it; that darkness was only added to it later. Which, though it might work, is simply false. “Of course,” said Sting, “I wasn’t aware of any of this. I just thought I was just writing a hit song!”

There are samples, and there is P Diddy's use of this song. He basically took the whole song and altered the lyrics. It's more of a cover than a sample, lol. I was so aggravated when I heard his version the first time, the anger of youth lol.

Right after Biggie died, P.Diddy was thinking about writing his obituary and heard this song on the radio and couldn't get that back beat out of his head, so he ended up writing a song with it. And he did give Sting and The Police credit. Sting recently released an album with Shaggy.

That's not accurate. Usually an artist has to pay royalties and get permission from the copywrite holder to sample another song. If they don't, they're setting themselves up to be sued.

"I'll Be Missing You" is based on a sample of the 1983 single "Every Breath You Take" by the Police. It also uses an interpolation of the "Every Breath You Take" melody, sung by Biggie’s widow, Faith Evans. Permission was not given for use of the sample, and Police songwriter Sting sued, receiving 100% of the song royalties. Sting reportedly earns $2,000 a day from royalties for the track.[1] Police guitarist Andy Summers called the sample "a major rip-off", and told the A.V. Club: "I found out about it after it was on the radio so no puff daddy stole it
