I'm in the same boat (except mine's a '78 Bronco). Teaching yourself these skills is a very steep learning curve and demands a lot of practice and it will take an enormous amount of practice before it becomes second nature. I think you pointed out yourself most of the areas you can improve on.

I’m surprised that you didn’t use a mig welder.

The original repair was done with a MIG welder and I’m a little better at MIG. I’m trying to learn TIG and have found that using the hammer and dolly on the TIG welds seems to work better, especially if the joint is tight enough to not require any filler material.
