I am a white woman. Grew up with then called the "underground" music of the late 50's and 60's. I had to hide the fact that as a young white girl I fell in love with black music. I would have been demonized then....but hung on! Motown, became my passion!,,,the greatest artists....now and forever! I am now 68 yrs old.but my heart is still of that of a 15yr old...Motown forever....miss you Marvin...Otis...Sam Cooke..James Brown...Barry White...David Ruffin...God Bless!

I grew up in the era of Marvin & Tammi Terrell and all the 60's beautiful Motown giants. They were and still are the icons of Black Music. They were the ladder for so many artist. Smokey, Barry Gordy created a fabric in history with Motown. No music will ever supersede what Motown built.

It said that the background voices was from a party did and recorded their voices. He played drums...the sound is him beating on a Coke bottle and can. He had a fantastic understanding of harmonic values and composition

I know this song - well - and when I heard "Blurred Lines," I didn't even think of this track. Having had the whole thing enter into litigation, I came back to see if I had missed something. I don't think so. There are percussion elements that are similar and the arrangement of both tracks are minimalistic (as most Pharrell songs are) which can lead an untrained ear to sensing a stronger connection than actually exists. For example: Both songs feature percussion and bass with vocals. That's all. No piano, no strings, not much in the way of back-up vocals. The phrasing is also similar because both songs are so relatively simple. The bass line travels in different directions, though. I bet P has a bunch of tracks on his MacBook that sound like this with variations that some would still connect to Gaye's classic. If Pharrell ripped-off Marvin, Neo ripped-off Superman.
@orangechicken547910 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. I have heard this song so many times, and when Blurred Lines came out, I didn't think of this track either. I may have thought of Marvin Gaye, but I don't think Thicke or his producer stole anything.
