Hey, awesome video! I’m going to Iceland next week and would love to visit the volcano. Unfortunately I’m an very inexperienced hiker and was close to giving up on the idea that I could visit it. The idea to fly there with a helicopter is awesome! It’s still very expensive so I wanted to ask you how hard the hike to the volcano really was? Is it mostly ground level or did you have to go up and down many hills? Would appreciate any help :‘)
@Got2Go2 жыл бұрын
You have to go up and down a few hills, and as it was when we did it I would probably not recommend it to you - but I heard that they made a proper path now with diggers that should be easy to hike! Bring enough water and supplies, make a pause when you get tired and bring good clothes for the weather - and you should be fine!
@johnthomas24852 жыл бұрын
Easy to see why Jules Verne chose Iceland as the starting point of his Journey to The Center of The Earth. Is that volcanic gasses or fog on your return walk?
@Got2Go2 жыл бұрын
There were many places where moss and some of the ground was actually burning (you see that as well on our way walking there, but it’s not so clear in the daylight) and that’s how it actually started with the eruption - some rangers first thought it started to burn and smoke because someone put their cigarettes there 😂. I believe that non of the gases were actually dangerous though, the Icelandic search and rescue team is really doing an amazing job keeping the pathes safe and otherwise would have closed those areas up completly.

Great video on the volcano. I will be in Iceland for 17 days beginning in early September, and definitely plan on trekking to the site. In your video you returned on a different trail from your entry. You stated that it was easier. Does that mean less rocky? Does that trail connect to the site of the current eruption? Does it take longer? Thank you.
@Got2Go2 жыл бұрын
At your time of hiking there shiuod be a proper path - they made one with diggers now so no walking over stone Fields anymore and you will be able to go there much more safe and quick! Don’t worry about the hike, just bring the right gear, water and some snacks!!!

I don’t think on this vulcano - at least not that I heard. Got2Go quality video of the eruption does add another notch of awesomeness to it! 🤗 But a word of warning: Also do *not* walk on last year's solidified lava. Right on the edge, you are safe, but there can be voids under the surface. The ground has not yet settled there and will take years to really do so. Someone just having walked over a spot doesn't guarantee the next one can't step on a weak spot and break through the surface either. It's also still possible that there are pools of molten lava under last year's crust. Anyone falling into them would not get a posthumous award for coolness or bravery but a Darwin Award. The Icelandic officials keep warning about that. I recommend the brilliant KZbin channel Just Icelandic for lots of fun in general and infos about Iceland in general¹ and this topic specifically! Oh, and Volcanos are a species that feed on a diet of drones. Remember that the infrared radiation is very much more intense near the lava. Plastic propellers melt, batteries overheat, **Phloompf!!1!**, another one becomes a future riddle for geologists: Where do the tiny inclusions of Lithium, carbon and copper come from? ¹ Like Icelandic mating rituals, the first Icelandic forest a sober person got lost in etc.
@Got2Go2 жыл бұрын
Very true, that’s why you see all of us only walking on the side of the old lava field, actually where it was on solid rocks already (sorry if the video gave the wrong impression, you see it better in some of the night shots that nobody is really on the old field). And yes, never fly a drone too close or right OVER an errupting volcano - but to be honest I thought that was kind of common knowledge or at least common sense. But you can get so close to these eruptions anyways in a a very safe way, you can just fly it along the erruption withiut risking anything and still getting awesome pictures like we did.
@zweispurmopped2 жыл бұрын
@@Got2Go I saw a video yesterday where two people, apparently teens, walked over the fresh lava crust to within some 10 metres of a running lava flow. It was taken from a drone and the youtuber basically used his drone to chase the two back to safe ground…
