I solder with my valves closed as well. People argue ventilation for leaving it open but that’s not a good reason. The best reason for closing it is to help keep the shape of the gasket where the ball valve closes. Great work, as always.

Ideally, solder ball valves in closed position. OR open when you need to vent the hot air from inside the pipe so it doesn't bubble out through your molten (fresh) solder joint. But DO NOT solder ball valves while they are partially open. That will ruin the valve. The only valves you can solder in the partially open position are: stop & waste valves; globe valves or gate valves. Happy sweating!

At 3:04, a gap appears at the top of the joint, suggesting poor flux or contamination, instead of the shiny continuous bead one desires. There might be enough solder inside to seal the joint, but I would worry that it could fail without the obvious continuous bead.

I thought that much pre-heat on the pipe and valve would've burned away the flux, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Is it because the Oatey in the green container is more heat resistant or something?

@@Got2Learn I see, so would it be okay to just always use that type of flux for any joint instead of the other types? I'm always in a rush fearing flux burn, but you're way more patient. For an amateur like me, that would be a nice advantage being able to go at a more relaxed pace as shown.

That particular brand and model ask for the valve to be in the closed position when soldering, some ask to be half opened, some opened, it really depends the brand. As for why I heated the pipe, I explain that here: kzbin.infoUgkxm1YH54kJ0Fwcwe0Udkrlg6NjX3Fh6TBQ?si=M5Wq_QQ4AETtOKIf
