Caruana's preparation is stunning, breathtaking. All of the moves that were not first place on a recent version of stockfish were very close second placers, if you let the engine run awhile. That apparently means that he was preparing the line with the idea of playing a 2nd or even 3rd place move in a critical position, so as to use the element of surprise.

Tablebases are quite an achievement that show the limitations even of modern engines. As an example, at 20:47 Stockfish was convinced that Nc8 (instead of MVL's Ng8) was a draw until it calculated to a depth of 43 ply to find a win for white. EDIT: In comparison, for Stockfish to find Shirov's famous Bh3 move in an endgame against Topalov takes 48 ply.

This game was beautiful. What was crazy to me was that MVL played 6 or 7 only moves in a row, just superb defense, but then blitzed out Nh6 (the losing move). He had found so many great moves in a row I was sure he'd play Ng7 (or Ne7). Like I said in your last candidate's preview video though, I'm all in on Fabi!

@Jack Strawb that is the point. It is a varriation you only should play if you know it very deep, very well. Since as black you so often need to play only moves( where refutations with white are findable over the board). White on the other hand has a lot of options and can chose one and know it pretty deep. And if gone wrong white has still playable position.
@shashank22
@shashank22 3 жыл бұрын
@Jack Strawb As someone who plays the Najdorf, I can attest to some of the arguments you've made regarding lower rated players not being able to punish black for taking on b2. However, it is so much easier to play as white because a lot of moves are natural developing moves.

You said there was no pretense this was anything but home preparation. Are players ever tempted to slow play a bit or to pretend to think to try to conceal whether a line is preparation or not?
@Blitnock
@Blitnock 3 жыл бұрын
I'm no master, nor even an expert, but I imagine something like this: One might think that C moving slowly on the innovation might give MVL some hope that the play is more inaccurate than it is and so possibly make him more careless in his reply. But I think in this sort of situation that's a bad risk because of the fact that the situation is incredibly complex and C would prefer the extra time to think about moves since he knows that in a few moves his own prep will have worn off. Thus I think the better choice is to move quickly. This would be especially true when facing an opponent as strong as MVL, who is not afraid to calculate through incredibly tough and complicated positions. Anyway, that's how C played. Maybe against a less meticulous and strong opponent he might try the "bluff" that he was out of prep earlier, by taking extra time, and hope for a loosing inaccuracy on the part of his opponent? But against MVL I think that would be a bad idea.
@shadowjack22
@shadowjack22 3 жыл бұрын
I have no idea but it’s something I’ve always wondered. If your opponent knows you’re still in prep, they will probably, look much more closely at key moments. On the other hand if you waste a few minutes and convince them you’re not in prep, they may not calculate as thoroughly as they might at the most critical moments. I’m curious as to what Daniel thinks. 😎
@PowerPlayChess
@PowerPlayChess 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Some players try to conceal novelties by playing more hesitantly pretending they are unfamiliar with the position - then the trap shuts. In this case, at this level, there is no pretence: a player would not go into such a perilous variation without an idea in mind. Regarding the opening, perhaps a more relevant question is why Maxime doesn't mix his systems.
