Excellent video!! Very clear and precise!! I found a reference to this channel from Eric O. at South Main Auto channel! You should give him a shoutout back! In the system info, the number 12.XX mmHg, is a reference to millimeters of mercury!! Hg is the periodic table of elements symbol for Mercury!! When you measure Vacuum, as in a typical A/C system, it's measured in inches of mercury (in Hg). And a typical cross over measurement would be inches of water, in SAE numbers!! I recently had to do this specific job (private, for a friend)! He was showing a evap performance code. He replaced the purge solenoid, at the behest of the O'youknowwho parts store!! PARTS CANNON ATTEMPT #1. That didn't work, so, he called me for a favor! I came, and immediately tested the vent valve!! It worked, but after two or three tries, it started to work only intermittently! And I showed him my findings!! That it was partially working, it needed to be replaced! The money light returned!! PARTS CANNON ATTEMPT #2. I used the code scanner at the parts house, and noticed that the tank pressure was absolutely following the purge attempts, and the pressure spikes, however, it was working but showed 6 in/Hg as atmospheric!! So, even tho it switched up and down as necessary, it wasn't calibrated correctly!! A quick pop of the fuel cap, proved my points!! But changing the sensor was a bit bad for me!! The truck had been used by the previous owner, to haul mulch!! For a while I'm guessing!! And the mulch ended up on top of the fuel pump area, AND SOLIDIFIED! Half a tank of fuel, no way to disconnect the plugs. Laying on the ground, with jack and stands!! Oh boy what a favor that turned into!! We spent hours chipping out the mess, just to get the tank out!! And then the clean up began!! What a job!! But the tank went back in clean, dry, and empty!! With a new sensor!!

Excellent teacher. Well done on diagnosis! I have a p0446 on a 03 suburban. I’ll check the vent line and solenoid for clogs before having to drop the tank since top of suburban tank isn’t accessible unless tank is dropped. Tried a gas cap but of course that wasn’t the issue.

Just came back to say this fixed my check engine light with this code. Had I not seen this video I would have change the canister. It really is not easy but it's not impossible. I did it without a lift. Lowered the tank just enough to reach the sensor. Code clear and it's been six months

I'm back to say 2 years after replacing this sensor the whole pump went bad. Symptoms hard start, after 3 to 4 cranks it would start. New pump came with sensor included. So 2 years with new pump still running good

I need a better scan tool and need to brush up on my troubleshooting on wirer harnesses. My scan tool just kept reading P0446 vent control circuit. This taught me that not everything is as it seems. Kudos to you man, this video helped me fix my problem thank you.

09 Silverado, new ac delco purge valve, new Standard vent control valve, new Gm gas cap. Shop advised to change vent solenoid. Truck sometimes very hard to fill with gas then no problems filling. Vent canister is not plugged. Perplexed. Glad you posted this. I only have a bluedriver but I’m going to check the pressure readings. On live data the pressure fluctuates between -14 to positive while driving.

Brother, that is a very well done video my friend. I have an ‘12 GMC Sierra quad cab 5.3L with a tad over 167k & just like my motorcycle n’ things, I keep ‘em in great shape. Just yesterday I got this code, so since I don’t even have a basic diagnostic tool, I had Autozone at least pull up what the code was that caused the check engine light, that bein’ P0446 EVAP. I’ve yet gone to school for auto mechanics, but am an aircraft mechanic in the USCG & am able to hold my own bein’ mechanically inclined. Autozone’s results they printed up said that most ASE certified mechanics have typically replaced those fuel pressure sensors on GM vehicles. Gonna take it to Christian Automotive tomorrow here my state Lonestar state of TX n’ have them pinpoint the discrepancy with a better diagnostic system as you have. Hey Jason, thanks a ton man! Glad you like the video! The list that Autozone gives you is just a list on possible causes. I wouldn't go throwing a pressure sensor in quite yet. A P0446 is most commonly caused by a purge solenoid. I would inspect that first. It's meant to be closed when not powered up. So, if you pull it off and can blow through it then it's failed. Thanks for the heads up bubba. Yeah, done extensive forum research & the techs at my local shop here, honest folk, suggested mainly the vent selenoid & charcoal canister. I actually replaced the vent selenoid today. Noticed the filter for it that clips above fuel fill spout was very accumulated with dust/grime. I’m the 2nd owner now for 3yrs n’ original owner maintained this truck greatly, but drove a lot as a foreman, so probably been down many dusty roads. Had 144k when bought, now at 167k & undercarriage n’ all is emaculate. After installin’, done more research & found out about compressed air blowage to clean all out. Wished I noticed that before puttin’ a new one on haha. If this doesn’t do the trick, I’ll look into the purge unit. But like I said, most of that mileage is highway being just a 6yr old truck. No oil leaks, trans, just spotless. Only major thing I’ve done is replaced my outer tie rod ends last year since boots were all cracked up. This fault code is the only other dicepancy I’ve had thus far. Anyways, you & that South Main Auto guy are very informative gents n’ we all appreciate y’alls honesty. God Bless brother

Thank you for shining some light. Swapped the actual evap valve. $35 oem part and $100 for mobile tech to drop tank. Code didn't clear. Also asked him to swap fuel pump's float sensor since I run out of gas when gauge says I still have 1/8. So now replace FTP and float lever. (2005 Chevrolet Uplander)

Great job, nice scan tool to have. Mine started small leak for a few years now Gross leak. GM seems to have different charcoal vapor canisters.Mine has 3 ports. Sites show charcoal gets into the lines. My first thing is to smoke test. 2004 Suburban. Ohm, continuity test purge valve19.4 all good. Will check with 12 volts. You’re too far for my drive. I’m old school, amazing Technology, you explain it well. 👍

My 2003 Colorado the frame rotted out so bad it almost snapped in half . This truck is not too bad but is on its way to rusting in pieces. Good video it is helping me with my 2003 Aurora . At present it is constantly venting so I am assuming it is the vent valve . I was a auto mechanic for years .

3 years ago I cut a hatch in the bed over the fuel pump location . My tool box sits on top of it anyway. Now that I have to change this sensor what a dream to have the hatch just lift it up change the sensor and done in 15 minutes. The reason I put the hatch in in the first place was because my research told me fuel pumps and this sensors are problematic in 1998 Chevy's and I needed to change the fuel pump at the time and being that I dont have a lift and I'm too old and fat to crawl under and do this from below I figured cutting a hatch w a grinder would pay off some day and today is payday.

Great video Mike with the diagnosing as it just shows that you've got to understand a system if you're going to troubleshoot it. It's pretty obvious that the other shop didn't do any diagnosing and was making a call based on parts failure such as the vent valve. That sure did look like a bear reaching over that edge, but it's better than dropping the tank. Oh, how is the little fella doing and hope the rest of the family is doing well too? I'm confuse @ 18:15! Did you take a jumper wire and connected the 5v ref to fuel tank pressure on the pcm and then you jumped the signal and ground on the connector? If you did I just learned something new, thank you much but will not do it with a 12v, like you said. Also to make sure my pcm is ok can I just back probe the my signal + and - @ the connector then use a multimeter to determine my voltage? If I'm wrong please correct my ignorance? Thank you much

Great video lecture!! I have the same issue on my 2001 isuzu rodeo 3.2 v6 2wd. They replaced the vapor canister and the purge solenoid next to it they performed a smoke test. Also, the purge solenoid in front of the engine plus the 2 vaccum hoses in front of the engine as well. In addition a new fuel pump. But still that pesky check engine light still comes on P0446!!! do you think its the same issue fuel tank pressure sensor? please help? thanks

Hey Chien, i'd be careful throwing a fuel tank pressure sensor at this one. You'd have to drop the tank down to fix it. You may be better off seeing if you can rent a scan tool. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor

on a 2000 impala, charcoal filter is good- the vent clicks and opens. But still fills slow. Maybe pressure silinoid on engine??? OR maybe something on fill hose ( doubt that,) seems like if fill before drive far---will fill with gas pretty well.

I have a truck reading the same thing a GMC Canyon Vent system performance. I replaced the vent valve solenoid. when I hook the truck up to my big scanner it says that there's vacuum all the time even when the truck isn't running in the gas cap is off. There's so much vacuum It won't even let me perform an evap self test. I'm just wondering is it the purge valve on the engine stuck open but since it's doing it not running is it just the same thing the tank pressure sensor reading the opposite too much vacuum

Patrick, really quick confirmation is to pull the gas cap, does it still read vacuum? If so, then you have an issue. It's possible the vent could plug up and keep the tank in vacuum but a stuck open purge would only read a very very slight vacuum and only when running. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor

I have this check engine code. If I replace this sensor will it also help when I pump gas. Right now my truck is very hard to put gas in keeps clicking off I have to hold the nozzle up in the air to fuel up.

Hey Terrence, no, this sensor will not have an affect on pumping gas. Chances are, you have a restriction causing the nozzle to click off. Maybe a stuck closed vent solenoid or vent filter. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor

I have a VUE that has the po446 right now. Sensor constantly reads 4.2v or higher and shows -13.25 h2o at all times. We pulled the tank and ran the tests and everything looked good. Replaced the sensor and right back to stuck at 4.2v. Figured we got a bad sensor, so we ordered an AC Delco. Still showing over 4 volts. I'm a bit confused on this one.

So, I'm having the opposite reading. My tank pressure is reading full vacuum 4.8v -30.63mmHg (-16.41 inH2o). Is this still possibly the tank pressure sensor?

Well, I tested my MAP and Fuel Pump connections at the harness and I had voltage being fed to both with key on. 4.9v on the MAP & 14v+ on the Fuel Pump plug. (Grand Prix, 3.8L) My code was cleared and hasn’t returned in several days but it returns sometimes. Could be my Vent Solenoid. Maybe.

I have a 2010 Chevy HHR with code P0446 and the readings are always around -12 mmHg and 2.82v tank pressure. Is that a large leak somewhere?

Hello, PO446 is set when the system can not vent properly. Sometimes the computer can mistakenly set this code if the Fuel Tank Pressure sensor is faulty. I would watch your pressure reading and remove the fuel cap. If the pressure doesn't go close to 0.00, I would look into a faulty fuel tank pressure sensor. If it does drop to 0, I would check for a restriction in the venting. Ryan W, Technical Instructor

04 gmc sierra. I had a p0455 changed fuel cap, charcoal canister , vent valve, purge valve and pressure sensor cleared all lines now have a p0446. Not sure where to start.

I wonder if you could cut a hole above the sensor in the bed,and use a patch panel afterwords. Just in case of later on if you would have to change the regulator ?

I could call it the secondary fuel door for removal and install for fuel pump... Anyway it's my old truck and I don't think I'll get too much money when I sell it anyway. Thanks for getting back to me. I told the smog guy about you and he was impressed that I learned so much from you. I have been chasing the code for a long time. I thought I could sneak a smog in today (cleared the codes and unhooked the battery) but failed so now I have 30 days to fix it. (different shop from the smog guy) Now I have 5 pending codes to clear.

Hi Antonio, P0446 can set when the EVAP system cannot release pressure from having a restricted vent path. I would check for a plugged canister or vent hoses that run to the vent solenoid. I hope this helps Thanks for reaching out! Ryan Wilsing

Hello Mike, im familiar with the EVAP system on these chevy trucks. I have one now, 04 Silverado 1500 4.8. P0446. I have gone through the regular diagnostic, but not coming up with anything conclusive. Aside from smoke testing ( which shows no leaks) i have removed the purge valve and smoke tested it while cycling the valve on and off. Seems to be operating correctly. The fuel tank pressure sensor displays correct voltage and vacuum when performed purge seal test. Can hear vent solenoid when activating. When opening vent solenoid after putting tank in vacuum, voltage and pressure return to normal. Only off thing, is when i open vent after pressurizing with smoke, the voltage goes back to normal, but i dont see any smoke coming out of the solenoid. Could it be a problem with the ECM? Thanks

Had this code (P0446) on my 2004 Silverado. Turned out to be the fuel pressure sensor. I should have watched this video first. I changed the EVAP Vent solenoid. Check engine light didn't budge. I then changed the purge valve in the top of the engine. Check engine light still on. I had to unbolt the truck bed and lift it partially to get to the fuel pressure sensor. But that did the trick. It's been a few weeks and the check engine light has stayed off. And I was able to pass smog. Hopefully it doesn't come back on.

Is it a good idea to replace the whole fuel pump assembly as a preventative maintenance since, the pressure sensor comes with it? I do have a running pump that's at least 10 years old but I dont know if I just do the whole assembly or just the sensor for P0446 code?

Nice diagnosis Mike as usual. I explain to people a DTC does not mean that part is bad and that $90 dongle they advertise to buy to keep from getting ripped off by mechanics is actually them ripping off unsuspecting buyers. All that $$ we spend on diagnostic tools and all we need is that dongle...crap!

A tool alone will not earn you a living. Whether it's a $10,000 Verus, or a $50 code reader. Part stores have it the best. They scan for a code, and suggest to replace a part associated with it. Start at number one on the list, if that doesn't fix it, go on to number 2. I laugh when I hear "free code diagnosing." Is it really free when you buy a part after? How many people leave with just a code number and no part in their hand? The best part about the situation I had here was that I have now earned the trust of this customer. That would be cool to see...father & son working together My desk has a Wells CMP sensor, Wells CMP connector, & Wells CKP sensor for an Aveo for a P0340 fresh in from Rock Auto. I could do a Wells TechConnect video. I scoped CMP sensor & waveform has a intermittent dropout when hot and the plugs wire insulation is all cracked falling apart so I was going to change it this weekend. My mother-in-law took her car to a Quickie Lube Monday b/c she knew I was busy so she tried to save me some work and then they proceeded to crack the CKP sensor so I have that to change now also. I told her from now on only I touch her car.

Great video. The fuel pumped was changed but get code P0440 and P0446 and it smells like gas. I would guess that there is some gases escaping and not just the sensor. Any ideas? Suburban 2002, 1500 V8

@@GoTechTraining I was able to find the issue and you were right. Upon close inspection I did notice that when they took off the gas tank, a wire was yanked snapping it off the Vapor Canister and that is where the fumes were coming from. Thanks for the quick response.

@@GoTechTraining its Suzuki wagon r normal it has purge valve charcoal canister and lines when you open the gas cap there is strong smell of gas and vacumm and when its very cold it starts on first crank but when its normal temperature its starts then dies i think it might be a stuck open purge valve ? Any Clues ?
