As a result, I have made the difficult choice to replace the opening music in most of The Boo Arc videos with a new, KZbin-friendly piece. I hope you like it. As a compromise, I have retained the original music in a few select Boo Arc videos scattered across the arc. For those who miss the original, follow this link to the opening as I uploaded it in 2020. I think the central failure of this arc just lies in making Babidi, Dabra and Boo just another brawny threat that needs to be stomped flat with more brawn. Just think about it, a wizard, a demon and a genie with weird magical powers would actually be predestined to present a more brainy challenge and that would have actually fit Gohan a lot more as he's supposedly more bent in an intellectual direction anyway. What if their magics made it impossible to defeat them just by punching them really hard or blasting them with ki? I mean, Superman's explicit weakness is that his toughness and strength falters in the face of magic, and one of his persistent enemies is Mxyzptlk, an impish wizard who can bend reality as he sees fit and who can effortlessly tank anything Superman throws at him physicially. So stories involving either force Superman to rely on his smarts more than his powers. But I guess this wouldn't have flown with the "MOAR FAITS! MOAR TRANSFURMASHUNS!! MOAR BATTUL POWA!!!" crowd.

Gotenks is truly a love-it-or-hate-it kind of character. I love how Gotenks deconstructs the old "Chosen One" and "Idiot Hero" tropes with how he was created specifically to defeat Majin Buu, but because Gotenks is an immature, egotistical fool who's far more concerned with showboating and looking cool and is virtually incapable of taking things seriously even when lives are at stake. Gotenks acts like a child would when he's given a lot of power and a lot of responsibility... he just keeps making the situation worse. And in the end, he fails spectacularly in defeating Majin Boo. And if there's one thing I'll give Super credit for, is that show does NOT sweep Gotenks shenanigans in the Majin Boo arc under the rug. When it comes to picking fighters to represent Universe 7 in the Tournament Of Power, the rest of the main cast unanimously agree that Gotenks can't be trusted or relied upon for something as high-stakes as the Tournament of Power. I personally how much of subversion Gotenks is on the usual characters and plot tropes you'd see in Dragon Ball. At the same time, I can see why some fans can't stand Gotenks for how immature and irritating he acts, especially when you consider how well written and mature Gohan was despite being younger than BOTH Goten and Trunks at the time. Gotenks shows that his particular personality makes him very much not cut out for saving the day and that trying to forcibly create an all-powerful saviour will not always be successful.

I do think there was an intended morale of sorts on this arc, but also think it likely wasn't intended from the start and only got worked on when Goku returns. The whole arc feels to me to hinge in the idea that the world depending on these superpowered hero fighters with absurd powers and so on who are absolutely misfitting society are in the end causing more trouble than good- the "villains come to Earth because Goku is here" idea but expanded to the whole cast. For all the powerups and fusions everyone will had, the only one who legitimately gets anywhere with "defeating" Buu is Mr. Satan- a strong human but a buffoon and fallible - and he does so by befriending him, not fighting him. Later on Buu defeats everything and kills everyone, and Goku can't even get a Genki Dama going to stop him- until Mr. Satan helps him in asking the world for help. Goku's the vessel, but it's Satan and the people of the world who defeat Buu. And then Buu gets reincarnated as a human to get to live a good life- and he doesn't reincarnate close to the cast but as a random kid in a random place of the world. The whole thing reads to me as "everything's become centred around these characters, and that's not good, these characters are the ones where one will go evil out of petty jealousy, one'll be a buffoon and not fight because he's two kids, etc".

@Kisaru10003 жыл бұрын
Honestly, the idea of "the new generation can't handle the situation because the old generation failed to prepare them" would honestly be a pretty fitting theme if fleshed out. You already mentioned before how Goku choosing to leave it to the next generation feels off when he (and Vegeta) are basically responsible for Buu's revival. And if it had been an intended theme, it would've been neat to see someone actually call out Goku and Vegeta, how they are responsible for Buu's' revival, how they woefully prepared any of the next generation to deal with their problem, leading to the worst case scenario, and ultimately it comes down to Goku and Vegeta learning from their mistakes and fixing the situation that they themselves created. Like, the fact that it is ultimately their fault, and it is the two of them (plus Mr. Satan) that defeat Buu in the actual story already makes it not too hard of a leap. Just needed a bit more prevalence, and a beginning to the arc that isn't wildly different from any of that.

This does kinda happen right before the final battle with Kid Buu when Goku admits that he could have defeated Fat Buu as a Super Saiyan 3 earlier (some question if this is actually true, but that's tangential to my point) but didn't because he wanted to leave something for the kids to do. I've always interpreted that as him all but directly saying that decision was a mistake (in a way Toriyama failed to have him do at the end of the Cell arc, where he had Goku admit to stuff that doesn't hold up as stuff he's responsible for- instead of the actual mistakes he made that arc (IE, letting Dr.Gero go)). I suspect that's the "one exception" Fusion was hinting at when he said the arc otherwise doesn't carry that idea through: Goku all but directly admits that it was a mistake to leave the fate of the world in the hands of kids who clearly weren't ready for it, prompting him to take on the reborn Buu, Uub, as a student he can mold into a fighter that will better fill that role (though with the ulterior motive of getting a great fight out of him in the process).

Especially considering the extended school part in the anime, this arc was so close to actually passing the torch. The superhero stuff was a fun change of pace, as were some of the new character antics and Buu. Having a protagonist that is way more booksmart trying to fit in before inevitably dragging a new cast into the DB world and actually exploring what a normal person’s perspective of the world (both pre and post revelation) was great. Buu was a super fun villain, seeing others give into evil (both through Babidi and like the pair that shot Buu’s dog, especially considering the superhero angle at the start), and Mr Satan using his charisma to help inspire others and reform Buu could’ve made for easily one of the best arcs. But instead we got the waiting for Goku show and all of it was thrown out the window. Honestly, the more I think about it, the more it irks me. The waste of Gohan and Videl also pissed me off, but now thinking about Babidi and the superhero angle, it’s so much worse. There was a character that offered power by bringing out the evil in someone, power that was enough to outdo any non Dragon Team person on the planet, alongside three different inspirational figures, one of which is named Mr Satan. Gohan could’ve played mentor towards Videl, Goten, and Trunks, while Vegeta, Babidi, and Mr Satan (at the start) acted as negative influences, with the focus switched more to inspiring the next generation and leading them towards good. There was still room for major fights (Buu and Majin Vegeta), but the danger would also come not only from dealing with Babidi’s plots (which would also allow Gowan’s supposed smarts to show), but from trying to maintain a positive image to inspire others. And heck, at the end, it could’ve led to the crew having a positive enough impact on the world that Gohan can publish the secrets of ki (one of my favorite aspects of the old Dragon Ball EU).

I'd argue Broly's story is also told through the fight. Outside of great character moments like Frieza shooting Paragus which leads to Broly's transformation, and Goku using his new move to try to calm Broly, because he understands he's not a bad person, showing maturity that he's been missing in Super, the whole fight is a battle between Goku and Vegeta who want to save the Earth from Broly, and are willing to kill in order to do that, and Cheelai and Lemo who are trying to save Broly from Goku and Vegeta, and himself. Broly kind of becomes a rage filled monster again once he transforms, but that's still storytelling and character building - the reason he becomes a roaring monster is because he was never actually thought how to express himself, and the only person he ever loved also abused him. I much more headcanon that DYING is what got goku to adopt mercy. He kept Majunior alive for Kamis sake, but after coming back to life, he was not as willing to let another person experience the same fate. With Yakkon it was more of a "whoops" in this interpretation, and probably not something goku would consider a direct fault of his own, it was yakkons gluttony that opened him for death, and goku doesn't seem like the sort that can imagine EATING as something even inherently dangerous.

I do agree that making Dende God was a bad idea, but that's only the case because there's no build to it, and it comes comepletely out of nowhere. Had Toriyama built to this, it could've made sense, and felt earned. After the events on Namek, during the time the Namekians are on Earth, have Moori and Dende meet Kame, and Dende express a desire to one day take over for Moori when it's his time to pass on, then have Kame ask Dende to be his apprentice, to one day take his place, when it's either his time to pass on, or if a threat comes along that's so great that he must reunite with Piccolo. Then Dende is forced into that position in the Cell arc when Kame must do exactly that. Sure it's not perfect, but to me it feels earned and there's at least some setup for it. But that's just me.

8:05 A traditional US DBZ fan watches the anime to see all the flashy fighting and only sees the story as context for why the fighting exists. That would explain why it was a tough sell for Funimation to have entire episodes with nothing but story development. That's why the first 67 episodes were condensed to 53. Seriously, look at the old Ocean dub and notice that there aren't any episodes where someone isn't showing off super strength, doing those fast dodges where they disappear and reappear, or shooting energy and blowing things up. Since you've been doing Super Sentai vs Power Rangers recently, have you noticed that MMPR seems to just be wanting to entertain kids with intense action underscored by loud rock music while Super Sentai actually wants to tell an engaging story? Remember also that Funimation used to have a partnership with Saban.
@MistareFusion3 жыл бұрын
While it's certainly possible FUNimation cut down the early episodes to remove the so-called "boring stuff" I'd always found it more logical to believe it was done to align with broadcast standards. A typical season of US television at the time was 26 episodes. They really didn't want their first foray to end in the middle of nowhere, or, literally, the middle of the big fight everything was leading up to. I'm sure some of those resultant cuts were made due to what they thought U.S. kids would respond to, no question. I do think you're being a bit reductive in saying there are no episodes that are anything but crazy powers. You're probably technically correct that there is no episode where there isn't at least one outlandish thing, but they're certainly not always any kind of significant focus. Remember that this was how I was introduced to DBZ in the first place. "Gohan Makes a Friend" was one of the early episodes that made an impression on me as a kid, and it's mostly Gohan collecting berries, patching up his wounds, and ineffectually flailing his sword around, mixed with a lighthearted Yamcha baseball scuffle. The only overtly super-powered things that happen is Gohan jumping out of a tree, followed by a gag of him hurting his fist by punching a rock. The main thrust in that episode is the story: Gohan's character development from helpless to self-sufficient and his feelings of loss in the face of being unable to save his new friend. It's the same thing with "Escape from Piccolo," which was another one of my favorite episodes as a kid. There is a moment where Gohan makes a big jump, another where he slices handcuffs with his sword, and one moment where the guest star punches someone once. Other than that, it's about orphaned kids, guilt, and pyrrhic victories. Episodes like "Home for Infinite Losers" and "A Fight Against Gravity... Catch Bubbles!" were far more about the fun factor. Overall, I think there was a great variety of episodes in The Saiyan Arc, even accounting for the nine episodes' worth that was removed. It made the fight at the end feel earned, something to look forward to, rather than the only thing Dragon Ball's good at doing.
@therealhardrock3 жыл бұрын
@@MistareFusion A New Goal... Namek was the one of the only episodes that had no action at all, just talking and exposition, and it used footage from 3 different uncut episodes. They also wanted to have recaps and previews with footage that would fit their narrator dramatically going "Last time, on Dragon Ball Z..." or "Next time on DRAGOOOOON BAAAAAALLLLL ZEEEEEEE!" The American/Canadian narrators talk like they're promoting a monster truck show as opposed to the kindly old grandfather telling his grandkids a bedtime story. There's also the difference of when the Funimation dub took over, the episodes had that upbeat techno theme that ended with a loud rock crescendo when the title card appeared. That kind of feels out of place with "Last time on Dragon Ball Z...Gohan beat up some robbers and went to High School," or "Last time on Dragon Ball Z...Goku and Gohan came out of the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and went fishing."

Toriyama did the right thing playing Gotenks vs. Buu for comedy. If you're going to do the red herring thing again, at least have fun with it this time. He should have gone all the way and played Ultimate Gohan vs. Buu for comedy too, especially since he gave Gohan that power up through a gag anyway (Imagine the comedy potential had Gohan decided to fight Buu as Great Saiyaman instead of cosplaying as his father). Like Fusion said in an earlier video, the Buu arc is at its best when it's humorously subverting or lampooning Dragon Ball.
@manjiimortal3 жыл бұрын
This fight is delightfully funny, and one that sticks in the mind, so it was nice seeing you having that same opinion. I think Toriyama genuinely wanted to go forward with the New Generation narrative here, but moving from the established hero, Goku, likely led to Shonen Jump readers writing some complaints about it, probably not many, but enough that Toriyama's editors forced him into changing gears, which certainly explains why Toriyama spent half a dozen chapters establishing a new status-quo for Gohan, but then he brings back the world tournament scenario, as an excuse to bring Goku back into the story.

I would have preferred it if sometimes these "red herrings" instead were portrayed as having accomplished something, but not solved the problem. I always have liked this fight. The effective use of gags, weird techniques and the way it doesn't take itself that seriously feels like it was designed to be a callback to the earlier Dragon Ball era. This also another point in Buu's favour. You couldn't do this kind of fight with Freeza or Cell, but Buu just makes it work so well. I also loved the dynamic between Gotenks and Piccolo throughout the whole affair. Gotenks is a complete idiot who their last hope and Piccolo has to try and keep him focused on the task at hand with mixed results. Piccolo actual feels like a genuine participant in this battle despite not fighting. For once, he's not just standing there being useless. He's trying to control the outcome of the fight by subtly directing the two morons who are battling. E.g when he leads Buu into the Time Chamber, he's setting a clever trap in case things go wrong. It's a really cool dynamic that sadly we are unlikely to ever see in DB again.

(Sorry for the long ass comment didn't expect it when I started) Great video as always Lance. The topic of today's video is really fascinating because it's probably the biggest reason why this arc is often considered the worst arc in the franchise( I still maintain the worst arc is the Cell Arc but I digress). I actually agree with most of you said about Gotenks. He is a gem of character and despite being regarded as the Savior I am not bothered at all with him not defeating the bad guy since he was never made for that role (Neither was Vegeta for that matter but US fans really want him to get the "win ". Unfortunately DB fans don't know how to read )because he and the parts who make him are so different from the generation we grew up and,case we remember, Goten and Trunks found lame as hell especially when they looked at Goku which is why Gohan would have been perfect as the hero since he represents the link between the old and the new generations . The problem comes with the fact that toriyama just doesn't know how to write the hero character anymore. The shtick of goku coming at the last moment to say the day was overplayed since freeza but since it was goku toriyama felt comfortable enough to keep it going. So when Gohan is in that position even he notices how jarring this is his, so he panics and goes in the most roundabout way possible to put himself in the comfort zone, IE goku saves the day. It's too bad because despite everything I like what he does with Goku and Vegeta at the end much more than what he did with the heroes in the Cell arc but it's undeniable that this choice cements the role of goten trunks and Gohan forever, especially in modern DB, as just fodder and that really sucks, for me it's the worst thing this arc leaves behind. Buu and later Gotenks get out similarly, it doesn't seem like the Dragon Balls are unable to do that. And if they can, seems like the priority should have been instead to figure out how to trap Buu there *to begin with,* _before_ pissing about with Fusion.

Btw, I never noticed how Dende was a teenager and using Kami's "gi" just for one panel, lol. Anyway, the Boo arc already showed all the red flags, but here...here is when shit hit the fan. Also, I dont think any of this was intentional, fans just kept demanding for Goku (and then Vegeta) to come back and save the day, so, considering he already had more money than he could spend on a lifetime, and has been tired of Dragon Ball for years now, Toriyama just nodded and gave them what they wanted...problem is, while Gotenks (I also liked this fight, its self-aware, its making fun at how dumb these fights, characters, and power levels had become by this point) turning into a joke kinda worked, what they did with Gohan...oh, boy.

If becoming super Saiyan 3 cancels out the fusion, it makes more sense to use it at the end when there's no risk. If they use it in the beginning and it didn't kill Buu in 5 minutes they'd loose fusion and probably die immediately. It makes sense to fight as Gotenks as long as possible plus the ssj3. If they can't win as ssj Gotenks (which they state they thought they could) ssj3 would be the last resort. I do agree that it foreshadows the arrogance that causes their failure but the plan in itself is actually optimal.

The problem is that, the big gun isn't powerful enough to defeat him, the lesser guns won't be, either. Sure, there is some strategy in sizing up you opponent first, but not in not going big as soon as you realize it's your best chance to win.

Except that's not why they do it. They don't hold back on SSJ3 to conserve power. They do it to show off.

@@ZipplyZane that's not a problem. Simply makes when u use the big gun inconsequential. Still better to have a longer fight were u can have multiple opportunities to win, even if the chances are small plus a big opportunity, then to go all out in the beginning and be out of commission immediately after your big gun fails.

you mentioned opening the door to the chamber would be ridiculously long seeing from inside. And what about picollos telepathical message to trunten? Did the few words echo for hours? 🤔 I suppose it worked like with recordings slowed down so the voice also got deeper 😛 or maybe picollo realized it and said something super quickly... or maybe it wasn’t really words but just like a transmission of intention or image or something?

I like to think that Goku didnt give Recoome a free action when he hit him and always regretted not letting him show his full power, so he made the conscious decision to always let opponents transform & charge attacks ever since.

When I was a small kid at my friends pool party, I wrapped my towel around my neck and told this older guy I was a namekian. He told me that he knew everything about dragon ball and that gotenks was his favorite character. I like to image it was you. That’s all

I like Gotanks😄 when I first saw him, in manga,He looked like a young cocky Vegeta Maybe it Toriyama‘s way to remind us of him That Since he died,he’s never completely gone because his son is here to do all the mannerisms and characterisms of the late prince of all 2 Saiyans.
