I can actually see this movie as a epilogue if Gohan was the one to defeat buu so Goku did not need to come back to life. If Toriyama went with gohan being the savior then i actually would see this movie as a wrap up to dragonball as a whole. our hero goku is in the other world having the time of his life while also saving two worlds one last time with his rival Vegeta who gets one more chance in being a hero and having a touching final moment with the closes person he would consider a friend. Also having Gohan being earth's protector in his own style while having goten and trunks being the gag side of dragonball but still a great touch to have in the movie.

Okay, going to give a lukewarm defense of Gogeta. Yeah, he's pretty one note, but I like him like I like the Fierce Deity Mask in Majora's Mask. There's a distinct satisfaction in seeing the tables turn so perfectly, the boss you struggled with so much, now becoming the one who is afraid of you, desperately struggling to even hurt you in the slightest. I think Gogeta perfectly captures that feeling, while not overstaying his welcome. Also, the Stardust Breaker was just such a beautiful attack.

I'm going to basically second this: Gogeta may not work as a CHARACTER? But as The Final Move that finishes off the Bad Guy, I think he works exactly right, arriving with the appropriate Pomp and Circumstance without overstaying his welcome (or ending up feeling like a Re-Run of another character the way Vegetto does to Gotenks), and feeling like an appropriately Epic, Unknowable Force given he's the combination of the series' two most powerful warriors.

Honestly, the artwork for this movie looks really good - while the manga’s art is more rough during the Boo arc, the anime is at some of its most polished. The characters can look very intimidating and ‘cool,’ but can also be very expressive - something that was lost as Dragon Ball attempted to recapture this style in later eras.

To me Gogeta’s 2 minutes of screen time may be short but for me he makes the most out of it. So many times in the series we see or are told about how a character COULD have stopped a threat long before a situation became dire. After hearing so many excuses as to why they didn’t just do that and straight went for the kill and actually going all out right from the get go and ending a threat for good rather than gambling the fate of the universe on having a satisfying match. It was nice to see for once a character who as soon as he is born/takes stage actually do that wasting no time while doing it in the most badass of ways. It’s much more satisfying to me than Vegito’s several episode plan of half assing Buu just so he can get him desperate and try to save everyone when they could have been wished back with the DragonBalls which is exactly what ends up happening anyway. Say what you will about Gogeta but in all his appearances he at least pushes the plot forward as opposed to others.

Honestly with how Fusion characters are handled in the series (Z, GT, and Super) it's rather refreshing to get a Fusion character who solves the issue with time to spare rather then seeing them joke around so much that the fusion ends up wearing out before they can do their final attack. There's the possibility that the thick outline was because those parts of the movie were meant to have 3D effects. Same about the weird otherworld beans and other odd compositional choices. It's possible the original plan was to make it watchable with those blue-and-red glasses back in the day, but Toei ended up not going through with it and left it as plain 2D animation. I've searched and found no hard confirm on this ( and these days with Super Hero in the horizon it won't be easy to find info on 3D effects of this movie, if there's any, plus 1995 production details are not exactly easy to come by), but it might be an explanation worth looking into.

I actually never questioned the missing halo's on the dead on earth vs Vegeta/Goku having one. The barrier between the living world and the afterlife is gone, but I always figured that the dead regain their bodies and life in a way when they go to the living world. So Goku/Vegeta don't have them, as they are in the afterlife. It does clash a little bit with Goku/Vegeta/Grandpa Gohan having halo's when they are brought back by Baba, but that is just a small thing lol

I really like this movie, my favorite DBZ movie. It has one of the best Vegeta versions ever, period. Goku's depiction is not insane and purely moronic, unlike say Super. The fighting is plenty good, and not just pure ki blasting, you actually see the martial arts; heck, you can actually see the differences in fighting style and intelligences between Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, and Trunk/Goten/Gotenks, specially the two leads. And I like Gogeta - he doesn't overstay his welcome, and he was never the point of the movie. The journey was. We knew, Goku and Vegeta knew, if they did fusion right, it was game over. The point was to reach a successful fusion. There wouldn't be a point to a lengthy fight for him. He came, he saw, he conquered, he looked good doing it, and he fucked off. And it really shows their personalities (which was already being presented in their best forms) together: they know that form is a tool, they know they have a time limit, they know they have to win and they know they vastly overpower Janemba. No bullshit prolonging the fight for fun against what wasn't even a trully sentient enemy (just madness and evil manifest taking over an incompetent ogre). No bullshit overly long monologue "I am the king of all sayans blah blah blah moustache". It is Goku and Vegeta on serious mode getting the job they meant to do done. And I wouldn't have wanted it any other way, tbh.

You mentioned it being visually appealing and talked about the thicker outlines, but in terms of the colors used, all the cool and visually interesting techniques Janemba does, and just the actual quality of the animation itself are all remarkable in this movie. In fact I’d say it’s the best that original DBZ looked.

This has been a heck of a ride. I found your channel back when you started covering the Frieza arc from the manga and it's been fun. Looking forward to seeing you go through GT. For all it's issues I enjoyed it so seeing you dissect it will be a good time lol

Glad you're ok Lance. All your content is awesome, for the record. I came to the channel because I heard about this series, but I've loved your DK videos as well, and especially MMZR. Even if I don't agree with every aspect of your reviewing framework, your comments are insightful and interesting, and frankly you just do an excellent job researching and presenting your topics. Here's to a new year with fewer unwanted automotive interactions and more deep dives into topics that interest you.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if this movie is a "favorite" for certain fans only because of Gogeta, and that all the comedy along the way is just something they put up with to get to that part. Especially since I even tend to see fans of Gogeta claiming he's better than Vegito solely because of how short his screen time is and that he instantly finishes off his opponent without screwing around. Speaking of comedy, however, if there is any constancy to the thicker outlines I think it is as a stylized element to help further set apart the scenes that aren't supposed to be taken seriously. Gotten and Trunks get the thicker outline because they are used more like gag fighters, whereas Goku, Vegeta, and even Gohan are all more serious, so they get the normal thinner outlines.

Well yes and no for me I liked the comedy but I also think Gogeta is better because of how he acts. Vegito tends to act like an overconfident ass and at first it was a planned thing with buu but then we got super. Honestly seeing Gogeta in super broly was refreshing while they really destroyed vegito in super at least to me.
@EmeralBookwise3 жыл бұрын
@@mr.protagonist5639: if anything I think super balances them out more. Vegeito is pretty aggressively ontop of his fight with Zamasu, failing not because he wasted time, but because his time got cut unexpectedly short. Conversely, Gogeta is a touch more frivolous, as despite knowing he has an even shorter time limit, he still pauses to consider what his name should be. He also doesn't jump straight to Blue, dawdling and needlessly dragging the fight out as a regular Super Saiyan. One could argue that's only because Gogeta knew it would cut his time short like it did Vegito, but he never seems to have any uncertainty about using Blue when he finally does, whereas if he was trying to conserve his limited time one might have thought he'd try God first. For me at least, because of DBS I no longer see much difference between the two. Just the same guy wearing different clothes.

It just occurred to me that you've been doing DBD for almost as long as Toriyama did DB, (3836 days from 11/20/84 to 5/23/95, to 3629 days from 1/24/12 to 12/31/21), though I don't know if that was intentional or one hell of a coincidence.

It's not that big of a deal for a spectacle piece, but regarding what you said about Gogeta not fighting... It's always nice to know that Dragon Ball fans care so little about anything other than fighting that the only responses you seem to be getting about it try to counter that the "fight" itself doesn't need to be dragged out and Gogeta I guess just can't do anything else in the brief moment he exists. Gogeta could brought the ogre back to Yemma, small interaction showing his personality...but that would only detract from the seriousness somehow. Vegeta's phase shift could've happened after that, wouldn't have been too long.

I'd actually say this was the best animated Dragon Ball film, as the animation is quite remarkable compared with previous efforts. Gogeta has no personality whatsoever, but it does destroy the villain in the most effective way every shown in Dragon Ball. It's like a lesser version of Saitama, who would have destroyed Janemba with only one punch.
@ieatvirgins3 жыл бұрын
Aww, I love Saitama's personality. He's easily one of the best characters in OPM.

I love the sense of weight and motion in the fight between Super Saiyan 3 Goku and Janemba's second form; there's something about it that I've never quite seen done in other animated works. The balance of floatiness and impact...it's in Gogeta's brief moments, too. (Also, this is absolutely the movie that wrote the book on the Goku/Vegeta ship, for the section of the fandom that digs that. Check out the lyrics to its theme song, even)
@prometheusmodelow83223 жыл бұрын
To be fair, though, coming up with Goku fusing with Vegeta is a no brainer, considering they were rivals for some time now, the series itself teased the possibility of it (during Goku's initial introduction of the technique in Kami's Palace), and the fact that their children did the fusion themselves already, but especially compared to the Dende thing, that one came out of nowhere. While Gohan's eyes are drawn like in his normal state, his hair here is drawn as his post-power up version, i always looked at this Gohan as being already "Ultimate Gohan". The Shenlong scene is VITAL, because otherwise we wouldn't get that one joke in the very end lol. I agree with that this movie strikes a good balance of what Dragon Ball is all about, that's why it's among the better ones for me, it's not on the level of DB movies 2 and 3, but it's up there, i find it interesting how the earliest and latest movies were the best while the middle movies were utter trash, thank you for this review series, some of the best out there, and i'm glad you survived your accident lol.
