Ironically it is the gotenna hacks Community which is taking the gotenna mesh further than intended. The super nodes, solar powered and setup for off-grid capabilities are pretty interesting. Essentially you could set up a neighborhood, camp, FOB, ... for localized communications. I'm wondering why no one has thought of building and using super nodes for restricted group comms. @@FranklinBryan it's an easy mistake to make but the FCC doesn't regulate the ISM bands, the ITU does. So it's easy for a company in the United States, reading FCC regulations, to assume FCC ISM regs, are compatible with the rest of the world. 900 megahertz is definitely a no-go in Europe. Using the drone as a relay was an interesting idea. Now of course, if you had one user (you) at the extreme end of your test and another user at the extreme end of the range in the other direction, it would give an idea of how far two users could be separated using the drone as a relay in the middle. There are a number of on-line tools to estimate radio wave "horizon" based on altitude. A comparison to real-world testing might be interesting.

Very promising technology, this kind of networking is probably the future, I see a lot of potential. Sadly though this particular device I find dubious. Too limited and too expensive. That it'll only hop a signal 6 times and won't store a message to be delivered when in range drastically limits it's abilities. EDIT, I personally think there's a lot of potential in using a technology like this to link vehicles. Imagine an instant automatic network directly linking the smart phones(or other vehicle display technology) within vehicles within a mile or so using an app like Waze plus direct communication based on location and limited identifying info like the appearance of the vehicle. Image the car in front of you has a muffler about to fall off. You look at your map, select the car in front of you, record a message and hit send. Or an accident just occurred, you send an alert to all behind you to slow down so there's no follow on accidents. Eventually with technology like adaptive cruise control it could be set up to pace based on the speed of vehicles ahead instead of relying on radar.

exactly, no need for any cell signal. mesh to mesh entirely in adhoc p2p no infrastructure. but, the REALLY cool part is that amongst any of those hops to other peers, if any other hops do have a signal, like cell or even wifi, you can, optionally, use those traditional networks if there's no other way to deliver the mesh message. so you could optionally leverage any available signal to get the message through. best of both worlds for messages that MUST get through. you could even setup a permanent solar relay with a fallback internet signal.

Comparing your tests with my own experience with the goTenna v1, it seems the original goTenna has 2 to 3 times the point to point range of the goTenna mesh. If you're in an area where no other groups of goTenna users can act as nodes for your own group's comms, and you don't want to invest in buying a whole bunch of units just to act as nodes, the v1 seems like a much more practical choice. Too bad they've stopped making them.
@docnightfall4 жыл бұрын
goTenna has taken offline a lot of the marketing material for the v1 in order to avoid calling attention to the relative range disadvantage of the mesh version. But the Wayback Machine has preserved some of it for posterity-- web.archive.org/web/20150315061657/gotenna.com/pages/how-it-works . In an environment without other nodes to bounce off of, such as when backpacking in remote areas with a partner, the greater wattage of the v1 makes it punch out farther.

Have you seen the new Kickstart Project the MILO, which is like the GoTenna, but all in one device which doesn't need a cell phone, but of course, you don't get the maps on the app device, etc. Both have their pros/cons and need improvements, but they're both a good starting product and each generation should bring improvements. www.kickstarter.com/projects/okmilo/milo-the-action-communicator?ref=profile_saved_projects_live
