I just ordered four. I intend to pair one for my phone, one to my wife's phone, one powered relay to keep several stories up in my apartment and one intermittently powered relay to keep in the car. The Network Map on the GoTenna site seems really encouraging, especially given that it's liable to under-estimate the total number of nodes that are out there. I wish I could afford the Pro or Pro X version.

I was really skeptical coming into this video, but you stepped up and did a great job. I think the gotenna mesh has definitely come a long way since the original version. They've also stopped most of the marketing lies and focused on the actual capabilities of the devices. Ironically it is the gotenna hacks Community which is taking the gotenna mesh further than intended. The super nodes, solar powered and setup for off-grid capabilities are pretty interesting. Essentially you could set up a neighborhood, camp, FOB, ... for localized communications. I'm wondering why no one has thought of building and using super nodes for restricted group comms. Awesome video. It's too bad the frequency of this device is no good outside the United States. Otherwise I would do a series on modifying these devices. Great work Cliff, thanks for sharing.

@@FranklinBryan it's an easy mistake to make but the FCC doesn't regulate the ISM bands, the ITU does. So it's easy for a company in the United States, reading FCC regulations, to assume FCC ISM regs, are compatible with the rest of the world. 900 megahertz is definitely a no-go in Europe. They should have chose the 400 megahertz allocation for ISM, or 2.4Ghz, both being good to go worldwide . I think I even mentioned this in my first video.

@@TheUrbanPrepper hey Cliff I'm all about the mesh :-) I have to clarify something, I was never against the gotenna, I was only against their marketing lies. Those lies could have gotten people hurt or in serious trouble during a real disaster. The gotenna mesh is definitely a solution for local /groupscommunities. I think the problem we have is people keep trying to compare it to more powerful long range Comms, which shouldn't be done. If you look at how gotenna Pro markets to the military. Mesh texting for everyone on a base, or on a ship, and the civilian world that could be a shopping mall, school campus, neighborhood, ... Anyway if I could get them here, I would do a video on building one of those super nodes. That is after all my area of expertise. :-)

Study the potential -20 dB loss of horizontal polarization (gtm laying horizontally on your roof rack/car) vs typical vertical orientation of it being hung off your belt, backpack, etc. The top (black) portion of the gtm is the antenna, you blocked that with your roof rack. Well, we were not thrilled at all with the original. What's interesting with this, is that there are nodes all around, from others, which is pretty neat. So you may be able to get better range with the nodes. But...I don't know. I'm still not sold. I think I'm just a HAM snob. lol. Like you said, maybe for very small, local areas, this could be good, but even when we tried with the original for a very small, local area of less than a mile, it still didn't work. But this new stuff from GoTenna does seem promising for local communication. Thanks for your very thorough review!

Using the drone as a relay was an interesting idea. Now of course, if you had one user (you) at the extreme end of your test and another user at the extreme end of the range in the other direction, it would give an idea of how far two users could be separated using the drone as a relay in the middle. There are a number of on-line tools to estimate radio wave "horizon" based on altitude. A comparison to real-world testing might be interesting.

To be truly worthwhile, you have to depend on a mesh network, meaning other gotenna users. I would be curious how it would function in a time of emergency, such as the approaching Ida hurricane in cell towers/network is down, when everyone with a gotenna is trying to communicate. I like the idea, but outside of a urban area, what the value would be in rural areas where there are few if any gotenna users. I do appreciate your video, as always well done.

@@JasonRasmussen Agree Jason, and while you don't need a HAM license to broad cast in an emergency, you would need one if you intend to communicate with love ones. Small hand held units have limited range while the bit larger that could be installed in a vehicle or home would be better. The HAM license test isn't difficult - I purchased the book from Amazon, studied a month then contacted my local HAM club and arranged to take the test. Cost $25 but now as they say "I'm legal".

Very promising technology, this kind of networking is probably the future, I see a lot of potential. Sadly though this particular device I find dubious. Too limited and too expensive. That it'll only hop a signal 6 times and won't store a message to be delivered when in range drastically limits it's abilities. EDIT, I personally think there's a lot of potential in using a technology like this to link vehicles. Imagine an instant automatic network directly linking the smart phones(or other vehicle display technology) within vehicles within a mile or so using an app like Waze plus direct communication based on location and limited identifying info like the appearance of the vehicle. Image the car in front of you has a muffler about to fall off. You look at your map, select the car in front of you, record a message and hit send. Or an accident just occurred, you send an alert to all behind you to slow down so there's no follow on accidents. Eventually with technology like adaptive cruise control it could be set up to pace based on the speed of vehicles ahead instead of relying on radar.

exactly, no need for any cell signal. mesh to mesh entirely in adhoc p2p no infrastructure. but, the REALLY cool part is that amongst any of those hops to other peers, if any other hops do have a signal, like cell or even wifi, you can, optionally, use those traditional networks if there's no other way to deliver the mesh message. so you could optionally leverage any available signal to get the message through. best of both worlds for messages that MUST get through. you could even setup a permanent solar relay with a fallback internet signal.

Comparing your tests with my own experience with the goTenna v1, it seems the original goTenna has 2 to 3 times the point to point range of the goTenna mesh. If you're in an area where no other groups of goTenna users can act as nodes for your own group's comms, and you don't want to invest in buying a whole bunch of units just to act as nodes, the v1 seems like a much more practical choice. Too bad they've stopped making them.
@docnightfall
@docnightfall 4 жыл бұрын
goTenna has taken offline a lot of the marketing material for the v1 in order to avoid calling attention to the relative range disadvantage of the mesh version. But the Wayback Machine has preserved some of it for posterity-- web.archive.org/web/20150315061657/gotenna.com/pages/how-it-works . In an environment without other nodes to bounce off of, such as when backpacking in remote areas with a partner, the greater wattage of the v1 makes it punch out farther.

These only work with other gotennas in your own network. They will not transmit through other gotennas not paired to your network. So even if you're in an area with a hundred other gotenna users, they will be of no use to you.

So do you have to have a mesh in your network to use to get to another node far away?
@TheUrbanPrepper
@TheUrbanPrepper 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if I completely understand your question. The Mesh's have line of sight communication with each other and can use other Meshes as node relays. Those nodes don't even need to know who you are to be a relay. It will just happen.

@@TheUrbanPrepper thanks. I was wondering if nodes have to be connected somehow or linked somehow to relay the message. I have a daugher in Boone NC and I live in central NC was wanting to see if they would work that far. but it seems like if there are alot of nodes inbetween it may.

I've been finding them used on eBay for around $100 for a pair. I like that piece point better. It would be cool to just be able to buy a single unit in all black for $50.

you can build dirt cheap mesh with lora $11ish (e.g. ibm project owl ducks) or aredn wifi $50 ish but no aspen grove routing or smsRelay and no txtenna btc or atak tactical mapping and no encryption? gotenna mesh isn't bad as the iphone version of mesh for non/semi technical users.

Have you seen the new Kickstart Project the MILO, which is like the GoTenna, but all in one device which doesn't need a cell phone, but of course, you don't get the maps on the app device, etc. Both have their pros/cons and need improvements, but they're both a good starting product and each generation should bring improvements. www.kickstarter.com/projects/okmilo/milo-the-action-communicator?ref=profile_saved_projects_live
