Something interesting that not many people caught in Dangerous is the missing piece of chorus. After Odysseus sings "Because I have one goal in mind...", it was supposed to be followed up by his crew singing "Make it back alive to our homeland.". But since all of his men are dead, that brief silence is what we are left with. Edit: For those who don't get what I'm talking about, go back to the song "Full Speed Ahead".

for clarity on what Calypso in the original Odyssey was like. In polite terms, she forced herself on him. For 7 years. So it's understandable that Epic: The Musical went the more tame and sympathetic route with her and had her more just be a very pushy flirt. Which still isn't great, but it's better than what Calypso did in the source material.
@xxabsolitexxx774710 күн бұрын
100% but I can sympathise with her. Given everything that’s happen to her she’s kinda gone crazy from being on that island for so long especially with the You know what seeds growing around her on that island which are actually horrifying. I’ll try and say that she gets away with this one more because she doesn’t know what she’s doing is wrong. Don’t get me wrong she’s wrong for what she did she’s just not wrong for not knowing it was wrong.
@grafikpapst10 күн бұрын
I think what makes me give this version of Calypso "the pass", is that she is very much a broken person, in a similar way that Ody is. And he clearly understands that. She isnt acting out of malice or even just greed and lust - she is deeply lonely without a reference frame for what a healthy friendship lets alone a romantic relationship would look like. She is desperate in a way how Ody is desperate to get back home to Penelope.
@MinecraftTNT6410 күн бұрын
Espeshally because Calypso can let people leave her Island whenever she wants, But she is so lonely that she rarely ever does. Disgusting
@haraken311910 күн бұрын
@@grafikpapst Yeah I agree and is why I don't think Odysseus wished to be cruel he said that he loved her but not in a romantic way as with years he probably figured out that much and even empathized with her and her situation. Like he doesn't necessarily hate her by the end but decided to stay decisive and ripped the band-aid decisively in hope that it is for the best for himself and for her too so she doesn't endlessly hang on her feelings for Odysseus but also giving Calypso that she is not despised by the end of it as she did save Odysseus from ending himself.

@@MinecraftTNT64 She cant. Only Zeus can. Its a reason Athena had to go to him instead of talking to Calypso herself. Zeus probably found it hilarious to put him there with her. Epic's version of Calypso is very tame. She was cursed to stay on the island since childhood and clearly deals with issues of arrested development. When she says "i'm not sorry for loving you" I take it to mean she isn't sorry for trying to reach out for happiness when the chance presented itself even when it wasn't "proper" so to speak to go after a married man who wants to leave. Original Odysseus is a full grown adult that _apes him daily in between sessions of him crying on the shore facing home. She didn't care and was actively trapping him with magic.

Jorge originally went to school to be a doctor, but switched majors after joining a theatre production and falling in love with the craft. This caused a huge rift between him and his dad who did not approve of it AT ALL. Jorge actually wrote a musical about the experience called My Heart Says Go. Since then however, their relation has mended, and Jorge's dad even built the sound booth that Jorge uses to record! This is what inspired Jorge to cast him as Hephestus, the god of the Forge!

I think also in Epic i always got the impression that Odysseus wound up on Calypso's island as a punishment by Zeus. Mostly bc if it were just that Calypso were keeping him there, Athena could've just gone and fought for him herself, but nah, she went to Zeus and he said "To untie apprehensions that were placed on that Greek" apprehend something = to hold it back. "So you want me to to remove his punishment?" basically.

Just to be clear - the bag here is not given to Odysseus to mess with him again or something, it is actually a tool that can contain the storm created by Poseidon, the same storm that prevented him from going to Itaka right away. So as long as Ody has the bag closed he can travel the sea without disturbance. I would argue that on the surface this song is mostly about encouraging, but if you think about it, Hermes actually also provided some practical help as well. Alone on his tiny raft Ody would probably never reach Itaka: he will be either lost at sea or drown when the sligthest waves started. But Hermes here gave him a guidance and a bag ensured a good weather.

Calypso's curse of faling in love is a Percy Jackson thing (great book that talk about greeks myths being real in this modern time). On the original you could say that most than a curse to fall in love is a natural reaction to feel attracted to the only man you ever knew and not knowing how to handle it, ending sadly (in the book, implied) on SA Odyseuss, in Epic, Calypso is like a little girl, she dosent know nothing because she spend thousand of years alone, that's why she overstep "if I push you, if I came too strong". She isn't apologising, only if she do that, she dosent accept she did it, she still blame him. I feel so sad about her but also I hate her

ALSO -- I'm one of those people who are like you, here for the story. This IS one of my favorite stories of all time at this point. It's just phenomenal in its depth and nuance and scape and it's absolutely incredible that it was able to be told through songs. Dangerous is one of my favorite songs too (the whole Vengeance saga is my favorite saga tbh.) Fun fact, Hermes is Odysseus' great grandfather! So he has even more reasons to help him! Although I would like to add, Odysseus didn't actually throw the bag overboard, just somewhere on the raft. It's definitely not metaphorical. He needs to hold onto the bag so as to keep the storm contained which otherwise would keep him from going home because, well, Poseidon is not one of those gods who had a change of heart, unfortunately 😔 Odysseus' attitude in this song is so fun because he's for the first time not overthinking morality anymore or trying to act a certain way (merciful, ruthless, etc.) Hermes is telling him, paraphrased, "Just be all of yourself man," and that's what he does. Mercy, ruthlessness, cunning, experience, kindness, wisdom, determination, ... everything that he is, he will use now. And well, where he's going, he will need it... 😢

2:37 that’s actually a story point from Percy Jackson. It was Rick’s way of making her story more family friendly, but her being banished is official to her mythology. Unfortunately, The Odyssey’s Calypso SAs Odysseus for the seven years he is locked there because of Zeus. (Edit- Thank you for informing me that Jay said she didn’t). Epic’s Calypso has been manipulative, another thing we heard from Love in Paradise, whether she realizes it or not. She _is_ a goddess who has been alone since she was a child, but she also knows what “No” and “I have a wife” means, as we saw in Love in Paradise, but she continued to advance on him. The fandom is very split on loving and hating her. Clover did a very good job of showing her sadness, but also having crazed expressions. I personally say that her situation is terrible, and they should have let her go, but that’s no excuse to make moves on someone she knew was married. (Please don’t kill me in the replies, I’m just trying to fill him in).

It's absolutely NOT the Epic canon, Jorge has confirmed this, we've seen zero evidence that it is, and we've seen other characters confirm that it isn't too. She's bad at boundaries, that's true, but she is absolutely not anything worse than that in Epic. And tbh, if you've literally never interacted w a human before, I can see why she definitely was initially bad w boundaries. And here we see her at the end of those seven years apologising for her actions and the impression i got from Odysseus' 'i love you' (as a friend) was that she must've stopped being so pushy and listened to him at some point in that time and changed her behaviour otherwise she wouldn't know she'd done anything wrong.

In mythology there's nothing about Calypso being "banished" to be on that island. As far as we know, she's willingly there and rules over it. This whole thing about siding with Atlas or whatever is also just from the Percy Jackson books.

My problem with trying to be too sympathetic with Calypso is that she was the one keeping him trapped there all this time. And for those who say it was the island, if it was the island, Hermes wouldn't need to be sent to talk to her specifically. The entire reason Athena fought was so that Zeus would send Hermes to command Calypso to let Odysseus go. She entirely held the power there over him. She does carry blame no mater her sad reasons for her obsession.

The way I always interpreted the line "Then I am sorry my love's too much for you" is with a comma, "Then I am sorry, my love's too much for you." Not trying to place the blame on Odysseus for not being able to "handle" her love, but she's simply stating that she is sorry for the fact that she loves him too much. I dont know if I'm articulating this well. I'm essentially saying I never subscribed to the thought of that line being her shifting the blame onto Odyssey.

My copy of the Odyssey is in The Norton Anthology of Western Literature, Volume 1, 9th Edition. This version is translated by Stanley Lombardo. Here are the relevant lines (Book 5, lines 148-155): "Calypso composed herself and went to Odysseus, Zeus' message still ringing in her ears She found him sitting where the breakers rolled in. His eyes were perpetually wet with tears now, His life draining away in homesickness. The nymph had long since ceased to please. He still slept with her at night in her cavern, An unwilling lover mated to her eager embrace." My understanding and interpretation of this passage is thus: in the original source material (so not EPIC canon), Ody is not as faithful to Penelope though he still loves her, and this passage reads as if, perhaps, when he _first_ arrived to Ogygia, he welcomed Calypso's company and also perhaps her intimacy. However, when he became homesick, he didn't want to be on her island anymore, and certainly didn't want intimacy with her (hence, "the nymph had long since ceased to please," implying she pleased at some point), but she didn't notice or care and just SAed him.

Calypso and Odysseus in EPIC is basically the same relationship Aira and Okarun have in DanDaDan. Calypso and Odysseus in the Odyssey is that first episode of DanDaDan, with Calypso as Turbo Granny

Just a heads up for the next song Charybdis: the song goes straight into the following one and alot of the animatics split the song oddly. without context to not spoil anything when Ody screams "No!" there is one more line of dialog which goes right into the next song. I only bring this up because I have seen a few other reactors get the cutoff and the next animatic not have that next part and the reactors being slightly confused as they lost 20 seconds of song. Hope this helps!

If you want a happy ending for Calypso, read Rick Riordan's first 10 books. She finally gets a boyfriend who doesn't just leave and abandon her but instead helps her off the island. She appears in the book Battle of the Labyrinth and Mark of Athena, House of Hades, and Battle of Olympus.

2:42 MISINFORMATION ALERT! What those people were saying is not actually the case in the actual mythology! It's a thing that the author of the Percy Jackson book series(which is based on mythology) made up to make her character more likeable. In most of the tellings Calypso was a mistress of the island and she was the one who purposefully trapped Ody!

the calypso falling in love curse is from PJO, also Not Sorry for Loving You was extremely triggering when i heard it for the first time, as someone that was in an abusive situation for 6 years the stuff she was saying was words i heard over and over again in attempts to guilt trip and gaslight, it felt like she was saying it was his fault for her loving him and its his fault for this whole situation and hes the bad guy for making her feel this way, not to mention the whole power imbalance going on cuz he's just a man and shes an immortal goddess who controls everything around him. I can't forgive what she did to him for 7 years and while Calypso from epic and her from the Odyssey are different that still doesn't change the fact that she kept him trapped on that island for 7 years and would have kept him there for longer had Hermes not shown up he was on the verge of ending his own life she didn't see him as his own person. so I understand some fans being sympathetic towards her we gotta remember shes not some helpless victim, also I believe in the Odyssey she isn't even alone in the island she has nymphs and attendants with her

Just keep in mind that after the next three songs, it might be a while before there are any more Animatics to react to. But if you're willing to just listen to the songs at first to get the conclusion to the story through the music and lyrics, _that's_ almost certainly going to be available on Christmas day. And if any Animatics get made before you're ready to produce your final set of reactions (assuming you don't just delay until the Animatics come out), I can guarantee that your audience will keep you informed about what's available to watch.
@CrimsonRedJoy10 күн бұрын
Yes!! Vengeance saga get hype!!! Dangerous is the BEST and Hermes is my favorite. You also picked the best animatic, super happy. I cant wait for next Saturday! I'll be frank, I'm not a Calypso sympathizer, not really based on the mythos, just purely on lyrics she is much less defensible in my opinion. "Kept you trapped out of your control", "soon into bed we'll climb and spend our time" *completely ignores Odysseus' "I'm not your man"* "I'm what you want here, I'm what you need here" & "from here on our you're mine, all mine". That's just not sympathetic. She's suffering yes, but she spread her suffering instead of trying to even "woo" Ody. And he makes it clear in the second half of Love in Paradise that she has no idea what he sacrificed to get home, so he never felt close and/or safe enough to share it. If they'd been friends and not captor and captive wouldn't he ask for help leaving? Since he only finds out here that she's trapped too. Anyway, thats my soapbox, lot of people feel things about both directions and you did a good job walking between them, I just wanted to say my piece :)

@aarsy9935 ROFL no! no I swear! you're good, I was agreeing with you. Don't get me wrong the version in epic is def more sympathetic (still not a fan of her personally) but if people are describing her OG lore then they need to leave out PJ lore.

@lusus5610 omg yes! I hate her sm and I think in the lore here too was showing that she's just horrible. People only feel sad about her and forgive her using the pj character!

@aarsy9935 and honestly I'll never forgive her in Percy either xD like every version of her is better than the original but still not great. She doesnt SA in epic to my knowledge and I get she's been alone but A. some people act like she did nothing to get sent here and B. I can understand trying to win over Ody, I can, but girl didn't just come on strong she practically hit the man over the head with a bat (metaphorically) like dang girl.

With the Greeks they had many different versions of love, and names for each of them, so yeah he did love calypso, just not in a romantic “I’m in love with you” kind of way, and more of a brotherly way
@multibubbled-il2bp10 күн бұрын
I can't recall any of the versions of the Odyssea I read where calypso was cursed to fall in love (unless you count Percy Jackson), only to be unable to leave her island. And yeah, her falling in love hard and fast makes sense, but the Odyssea was pretty explicit about her raping Odysseus repeatedly. I believe the exact line was “In the nights, true, / he'd sleep with her in the arching cave - he had no choice - / unwilling lover alongside lover all too willing”. That said, this calypso, if nothing else, probably didn't actually rape Odysseus.

There are a couple very drastically different approaches to 600 strike. The one from the livestream, and duvetbox's are both good, but tell the story very differently. I think it would be cool to check them both out and let us know your thoughts about how it changes the story etc. (could also be something you do after you've done reactions for all the epic songs? go back through and watch different takes on the animatics and see how it changes the story and share thoughts on it?)

It really is a depressing story, Odysseus and Calypso. In the original myth, she was isolated on the island Ogygia, possibly for her connection to her father, a Titan named Atlas, though it's unclear and implied that she just chose to be there. Heroes do come on the island, but they never stay, and they never love her like she does them. Since greek mythology was typically orally shared, the story between Ody and Calypso varies, with some detailing she SA'ed and manipulated him and others saying she acted more like in EPIC, where she's kinda sweet and desperate for love (though typically she uses a type siren song to make him want to stay). All the while, Odysseus either acts distant and cold, trying to keep to himself or creul and manipulative by playing along to buy himself time. Usually, however, the story ends with Ody loving Calypso (kind of) and leaving her with 2 sons, abandoning all of them once Hermes comes to demand his freedom and the gods allow to go home. Now, her desperation doesn't excuse what she did, but it does explain it and give some perspective to just how bad the situation was for both of them.
@Kamarovsky_KCM9 күн бұрын
No she wasn't "imprisoned there" in the original myths. That's all invented by Riordan for the Percy Jackson novels. Wish yall would stop spreading that falsehood...
@A_CC-ce5pb9 күн бұрын
@Kamarovsky_KCM So, I did some research after your comment, and you had a point. It's been a little while since I'd fully doven into the Odyssey, and I had mixed the stories in my explanation. Thanks for addressing that. It helped me out. I edited the comment to fix my statement. Also, it kinda seems implied as an imprisonment or something similar? Like, the gods seem to be enforcing/ supporting her isolation (out of respect or fear?), so I don't know.
@Kamarovsky_KCM8 күн бұрын
@@A_CC-ce5pb Sure could have been in some way involuntary, but unless we discover some ancient writings claiming so, we can't assume that. Sadly a lot of myths have few surviving sources, as most, like the Odyssey, were for the longest time passed down solely through oral tradition. Really hoping that some writings one day get unearthed that gave us more info, because for now, some mythological characters that are known in the modern culture have a total of maybe two sentences dedicated to them in ancient writings.
