Gotham City. Night. They go together beautifully. Like a marriage made in, well, let's just say they snuck off together, a dysfunctional pair of lovers infatuated with each other. And up here, on one of the many rooftops, it's all the better. A little less grit. A little less noise. The air's a bit clearer, and after an hour up here, so's my head. That's why I come up here, adding one spark, one tiny lit cigar, one faint amber star to the myriads that are far beyond, winking at me as they occasionally peek through the wafting streams of clouds and the windblown columns of smoke. So yeah. It clears my thoughts a bit. And my sight. I see I'm not the only lonely soul that loves to perch in high places. In solitary repose, There's the Batman… wait, where's his cape? Too shapely, too… Catwoman. So she's on the prowl, eh? I'll wager a wad of money that the Bat's around, watching her. Man, if I could nab her and present her to the cops, they wouldn't think of me as a small time gumshoe anymore. It would be MY name in the papers, and not the Bat. Who even knows if he has a name? There she goes, off to some bank or local jewelry store. I hope they got insurance. After thinking about it, I guess I should be grateful. The Bat, or the Competition, as I call him, seems to leave enough small time crooks alone to keep people like me in business. Fast Freddy, Jimmy the heavy, and his boss, Mickey Mugface, keep my plate full for the moment. And there he is… Batman. Right on the trail of the Cat. I've had enough clear air for the night. Time to go back down to my office and pour a nice little scotch before reviewing tomorrow's case and falling asleep on the sofa. Good luck, Bats. Just don't nab all of 'em, or we'll both be out of business.
