Not necessarily. The Joker in the comics, depending on the writer, is depicted both ways - as a Jerome version and as a Jeremiah version. Remember he’s the Clown Prince of Crime, not just chaos. Jerome was chaos incarnated which is the more widely known version of the Joker, but the original joker was a lot more like Jeremiah.

My personal Jerome/Jeremiah theory: I think that that (with the hindsight of Jeremiah’s abusive childhood behavior), the sad, pitiful Jerome we see at the beginning is more in line with how he probably used to be. Jerome largely turned out the way he did because Jeremiah, a sociopath, constantly blamed him for things and got their family to abuse Jerome (all the while praising Jeremiah).

It's a mystery. I like to think Jerome was acting when he was the sad boy. Your theory is more interesting I suppose in retrospect but it seemed pretty clear he was acting I thought after he revealed himself. But a lot of people seem to think he broke in that interrogation room. Honestly your theory still works either way

I have to say that I didn't think it was an impression of Heath Ledgers portrayal, IMO, he was much closer to Jack Nicholsons portrayal in Tim Burtons version of Batman. Even down to the way he spoke at one point.

The thing about DC is that alot of different stories can be cannon at the same time, DC will simply make it cannon for a different universe in the stories as they have done for everyone of their comic, animated and cinematic series they have accepted as cannon. I think we're all missing a very important criticism about this. Now don't get me wrong, this kid does a good Joker. But his introduction, like everything else in Gotham is too DAMN EARLY. What's the point of having a pre-Batman Gotham, if you consistently keep adding Batman villains to it?
