Suggestion: since both engines are playing the worst moves based on standard evaluation, they are blundering mates but the opponent is not checkmating them. This is because they still evaluate under the assumption that, in the future, both will play the best moves. Instead, we could also change the evaluation algorithm, so that they do indeed assume both sides will always play the worst move possible. This way, instead of playing moves that make no progress for either side, they will actively be trying to lose, making moves that force their opponent to play something good. For example, a queen chasing a king around the board trying to force him to take her or other similar things would be hilarious

Conceptually, making stockfish do this would be very easy, just take the evaluation function (which gets the advantage score for each board) and just add a minus sign so that it just negates the score it gets. Because the same function is used for both stockfish and its opponent, this would mean that it should also simulate the opponent wanting to do the worst possible move. This honesty sounds like the easiest way to properly make a bad version of stockfish. (There is probably more to it than that, though) We do not know exactly what was done to stockfish in the submitted game (it having solved any version of chess is clickbait), a bad-at-being-worst version would be if it just picked the worst evaluated move from a normal version of stockfish. If a move is evidently bad enough right-of-the-bat, normal stockfish would just stop looking through how a opponent could respond, meaning it wouldn't actually know which one of the worst moves is actually the worst one.

It's because it isn't just purely the "worst move" in a vacuum. It's the "worst move given the assumption (which is incorrect in this case) that your opponent will play their best move". If you programmed it to anticipate the opponent doing the same thing then it would find a different set of worst moves, since it would want to favor outcomes that limit the opponent's bad moves. That would probably involve a lot more waiting moves rather than taking pieces.

Amazing content as always. But... is worth noting 1. Stockfish strength relies on in great measure to its aggressive pruning. Avoiding the analysis of bad moves (supposed bad moves) from both sides. To play worse that pruning should be reversed. 2. Chess engines evaluate the position supposing that the opponent will make the best move... it should be rewritten to suppose the other side will make the worst move. 3. I guess the "principles", the parameters the software uses to evaluate a position (a leaf, a position that will not be "advanced) should be rewritten too. It should be reprogrammed to lose, not to play the worst he can find. I am writing this supposing that you do not know about decision /game trees (I mean in a programming sense, in the chess... it is just what you mean when you say "calculate a move"). The 5:00 is one of the more interesting parts of the game imo. With the queen already hanging the absolute worst thing to do is entomb your own pieces so they cannot join in the attack on the king, while weakening your light squares to ensure the king has the maximum number of escape routes. I think it can be even better: Currently it chooses the move that gives the opponent the biggest advantage, but the advantage is calculated given the opponent's best move. There should be another edition of this where stockfish knows the opponent is going to pick the worst response, and picks the worst move with that in mind. Instead of attempting to blunder the game assuming the opponent is going to be reasonable, each side will be trying to force the opponent to win against their will.

In this video, they just had to play the objectively worst move on each turn, they weren't trying to lose. Otherwise it is like saying, I am trying to reach somewhere by walking away from there.

It seems like in order to keep it from going on forever, they programmed it to always advance the position when possible to do so without failing at its mission. Like when given the choice between blundering mate in 1 while taking a piece and blundering mate in 1 _without_ taking a piece, it'll always choose the former. For example, at 13:44, the computer opts for dxe1=N, when it could've gone so much worse with d1=N. Because it's still programmed to assume its opponent makes the best possible moves, which makes both moves equal as neither of them stops Qxb2#. A nice touch.

Interesting observation! It doesn't sound like that was intentional, though, so I wonder if it's that Stockfish considers blundering mate in 1 to be equally bad regardless of the piece count (which would be a sensible thing to do -- you program it to avoid forced mates first, and then use the heuristics like piece count to choose between the moves that don't blunder forced mates), and then due to a programming oversight, some tiebreaker code in Stockfish that applies when there's a "tie" result of multiple equally-scored moves is still playing to win (by capturing pieces) rather than playing to lose.
