iwantcheckmate has beaten Martin with just one pawn, but has confessed to being simply unable to do so with one bishop or one knight. This contradicts the commonly held belief that bishops and knights are worth more than pawns. In this essay I will...

It's actually possible but you need hundreds of attempts, and it's easier with knight, if Martin traps his own king, one knight or bishop would be enough

I think Martin is programmed to see M2 anywhere. That pawn move almost seemed like an accidental checkmate. Like he was just putting a pawn in the center and accidentally checkmated
@ckingproАй бұрын
Close. Martin can see all mate in 1. Any higher there's a likelihood Martin misses the mate. And a lot of the other blunders are also random aside from the opening book which is pretty interesting to say the least (and won't work because of the non-standard opening position)
@eragon78Ай бұрын
@@ckingpro is he programed to just sometimes make completely random moves or something?

@@eragon78 A computer has no "feel" for chess. It checks certain legal moves, and with an analyzer it ranks these to how good the position is afterwards. If you either limit the depth of moves analyzed, or handicap the analyzer itself, then to the computer all moves look equally good and it just picks one.
@eragon7825 күн бұрын
@@graealex Computers absolutely have a "feel" for chess. Thats what the whole innovation about neural networks were about. They use a neural network to take in the positional aspects of the position, and use that in part of it's analysis of the current situation, and which moves are better candidates for moves than others. Chess engines arent brute force anymore, they dont just check every possible position. When they did that, they were significantly worse than modern engines are. Modern engines are hybrid engines that have some intuitive sense of board state from AI training, mixed in with brute force calculations. Even if you limit the depth to 1, modern engines still have some sense of which moves are better than others based on simple heuristics and intuition from their training. Something like, bishops should control long diagonals, controlling the center is good, king safety is important, etc. To really prove that this is the case too btw, back in 2017, when AlphaZero (a neutral network) went up against Stockfish (at the time, only traditional brute force with some clever ways to reduce some bad lines), the calculation speed of AlphaZero was about ~70,000 moves/second. Meanwhile stockfish could calculate about ~70,000,000 moves/second. 1000 times more. Yet AlphaZero dominantly won over stockfish. This is because even though AlphaZero calculated moves much slower, it had far better intuition of each position than stockfish, which basically only ever went off piece value, very simple heuristics, and not much else. Today, Stockfish is a hybrid engine that uses a neural network as well, and its significantly more powerful than it was in 2017. But the ultimate point is, engines DO have an intuitive understanding of board positions. Brute force alone has too many limitations, and its not enough to get engines as strong as they are today. All the current best engines use neural networks, because it provides them with better intuitive positional understanding, and mix it in with brute force calculations.

How would that even work? It probably doesn't make sense if the only legal move is to capture en passant, as you'd need a really contrived starting position to make that work. But if the rule is just that every capture must be en passant, then I guess that could be doable.

@iwantcheckmateАй бұрын
LOL
@eragon78Ай бұрын
knight and bishop may actually be a little easier than 2 knights or 2 bishops. The reason for this is because with a bishop, you can target knights without having to risk a trade, and with a knight, you can target the queen and bishops without risking a trade. With only knights or only bishops, you always had one weakness where you had to just hope he blundered those pieces. With one of each, you have different strategies available. And a bonus is that knight and bishop ARE enough to checkmate a lone king, although whether or not you know how is the other question as its one of the trickiest ones to do. Although against martin he'd probably make it a lot easier.

I just recently got back into chess with my favorite opening being the scholars mate/opening any advice on a better opening?
@iwantcheckmate14 күн бұрын
Hey! If you're just looking for something to get your pieces out and castle safely, I recommend the London. The scholar's mate has the drawback that if the opponent does not fall for it, the queen is left out on board prematurely developed where it can be attacked easily. Welcome back to the game! Hope this helps :)
