"Good girls wear black"...moral to the story is...this is the truth. Elitism or not, alternative people are mostly the kindest people you will ever meet, despite what society might think as a whole. Thanks for posting this video Milady Angela! I appreciate you teaching this younger generation of GOTHS cos' they seem to have forgotten that the original post-punk GOTH subculture in the 80's and early 90's was mainly characterized by a DIY kind of attitude directly related and in many ways similar to PUNK!

Honestly, I never would have even thought about doing something with a cheap thrift store blazer, so thank you for this! I'm personally not crazy about the safety pins. At least not for myself anyway. Not that they do not look cool, just not my personal thing. However, I might see if I can find a cheap old black blazer at one of the thrift stores in my area and do something similar, but with studs instead.

I know this video is pretty old and I'm late to the party but I thought I'd throw in my little safety pin on clothing tip anyway. I also have always been a fan of the safety pin look. In fact I had articles of clothing that were literally held together by safety pins and a trick I used to help keep them from popping open and stabbing me was to take a pair of needle nose pliers and squish the safety pins closed on the top. That little slit where the needle part slides through so you can open and close the safety pin, just squish it closed real good after you have it where you want it and close it. Every now and then if you are real rough with it or really force it they might still pop open but mostly it works and saves you from pin pricks or worse your clothes falling apart. Hope this helps somebody out there.

I got myself a blazer from the thrift store the other day and did this. I love it!. I also did up the butt pocket on a thigh-bag I made myself a year ago out of an old pair of jeans in a similar manner because I like the look. I may have come into the subculture after having reached adulthood, but I grew up in the 90s, had Goth friends I hung with, and I'm still a 90s girl at heart, which I think is why I adore your channels (and you) so much. A little tug of nostalgia while still being rooted in the present. Just out of curiosity: when you pinned the lapels, did you go through both layers of fabric or just the outermost one? Going through both layers, I find makes the pins stand up more, but I guess it depends on what look you might be going for with it.
@smb8795 жыл бұрын
I just stumbled upon your channel, and have been enjoying the tutorials. Your make up is to die for 🖤 I would not officially consider myself goth ( I didn't have the fortune to explore the scene to learn the ways first hand) However, I always leaned towards dark/spooky interests (Horror fiend since childhood), and wore my weirdness on my sleeve in my younger years (I'm 40 now 😎) . Aside from my tattoos, I just realized it's inside me. It's always part of who I am, even if I wear mostly stained/worn out mom garb today. Anyway....I use to pin the back of my jackets, or shirts together in order to make them more form fitting. I also used them to secure zippers on my handbags while out, and about. I actually began to accessorise with thicker/larger pins as a form of self defense when I went out for the night. Walking out of a late class to my car, I pulled one out to keep handy.

Soooooo cool!! :) I had a black military style jacket that I did something similar to with safety pins. I had kind of an obsession with those tiny metal ball chains too. You know, like those things you find on lights. Those pull chains with the tiny metal balls. Everywhere I could get them,and take them, I would n' find a way to incorporate them. DIY was so much fun!! You could do anything really and the only limit was your own imagination. The jacket you had must have been AWESOME!!

@emerituse33908 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah! Those things were really cool. For necklaces and all kinds of things. I used to take the tiny ones and solder two of the balls together and then put pieces of silver jewelry wire between them and wear them as rings on my pinkies n' thumbs. They kind of ending up looking like, strung together, little metal bones. :)

It was a bloody steal when I found a $70 Tripp NYC jacket at a thrift store one time, sold for about $10. I simply had to get it. I don't get to go thrifting much, but now my girlfriend wears that jacket with pride lol. Some interesting stuff can be found in thrift stores. I am absolutely obsessed with safety pins, though. They have a variety of uses and they're just all around fun to collect. I do get upset, however, when someone uses my safety pins. I started collecting them when I got into punk and when I goth to be a bit more suitable at times, it just carried over lol.

Me too! Thrift stores are goldmines. Have you tried estate sales? They're great for good vintage. The safety pin I fear is becoming a lost art. It makes me happy to hear from someone who remembers them. Safety pins everywhere! They were the quickest fix to take something bland and edge it up.

Yea! Thrift stores are the best! But I've also noticed there aren't a lot of slips in the last five or even ten years, which is unfortunate. I've usually had some luck finding them at places like TJ Maxx or department store outlets though! I got a bunch of slips for thrift prices about five years ago from a brand called Marilyn Monroe at a JCPenny outlet(I think) but they're all worn out now and I've been on the hunt for new ones which is turning out to be a bit fruitless. :-(

There use to be an abundance of slips and all of a sudden, that section was barren. There were a lot of corsets ironically enough because if it were 1996 I would have lost my mind with excitement. I had this kick ass black velvet choker with a black Victorian like pendant with a fake black jewel, god I wish I knew what I did with it! At least I still have my glass bubble necklace with black nylon cording anyone remember those? I also had this black velvet shirt back in the day, it had short sleeves and a mock neck 90s look.... I'm 38 now damn it! I lost that shirt it would so fit my athstetic now.... back in the day where I did not know I was a child of the bat aka goth.....A little late in the goth world i'm a 38 yearold baby bat if there is such a thing though I've been listening to goth music since I was a kid not knowing it was goth welcome to my life lol.....

recently I took your advice and bought a sort of slip that I plan on DIYing :) is there some specific advice you could give before I ruin it? :D

Ahhh, awesome! What color is it? What's the fabric content? How old would you rate it? 1930's-1980's etc. We'll go from there.
@p5ych0_w1tch8 жыл бұрын
alright, well, it's black, rather loose (but falls nicely), short (mid-thigh length) and with thin straps. the fabric is silky, and very light, but I guess that's how most of them are :) . it doesn't seem very old (roughly 80s I'm guessing) and has no proper detail, so it's just plain as of now, which is why I thought doing something to it would be nice. where should I start? :) (also, it's awesome that you replied to this :) really love your videos)

I would have a hunt around etsy or ebay and look for some lace trim to end the bottom off with and maybe add to the bust or waist. Ribbons in red or deep purple or plain black if you want to keep it simplistic, tied into little bows-- Has a dolly- goth feel.

Angela Benedict thank you so much! I think I'll do that then :) if there's any other things, I would love it if you shared also. I can show the results in any case when I get something done :) thanks again!

If I decide to do a similar diy I will link back to your channel. You inspire me dude. I luurve your channel. I am obsessed with trad goth, romantic goth etc. I don't wear leather and I'm looking everywhere for an 80's style trad goth O ring non leather belt. I only found one so far.

Thank you so much! You've made my night. I think the ones from china are faux leather.

Nice simple DIY. Safety pins were never popular within the goths in my city, it's one aspect of the punk culture we did not kept. Rivets though lol on everything, and lace trims. but that sure cost a lot more to DIY :(
@angelabenedict8 жыл бұрын
You can get them online and pay much less. Ebay ;)
@brizabatsombre82808 жыл бұрын
Ebay didn't exist back then hehe. Sure are positive sides of being goth today (woot)!

True, be at the second hand places that have your "extremely young" and "seriously thin" friends work at.

That store is a saver's! I used to work in one! Be careful and make sure to WASH YOUR SHIT that you get from there. I have so many stories of why this is required o.o

I love this! NZ op-shoping (thrift stores) is slightly more expensive, and a worse selection, but you can still find some great stuff. I have an 80s beatup leather jacket which I love! Ahh, if only I had more time... Just a question, do you do any knitting or sewing? I love both but it would be cool to be more gothy with em!
@angelabenedict8 жыл бұрын
The hunt is definitely fun! I do sew, yes. I have a sewing machine, an overlocker and I can sew by hand but it takes soooooo long >.
@sophroniel8 жыл бұрын
+Angela Benedict Indeed! Do you usually follow patterns to make garments or do you usually just alter things? It's super cold here atm to I am looking for things to wrap up with! At the moment it's a cute black cardi with skull buttons and a lace top piece x
@angelabenedict8 жыл бұрын
Sophia Grey I do both :) I can also make my own patterns. The cardi sounds adorable. Did you diy it?
@sophroniel8 жыл бұрын
+Angela Benedict Oh man, you should totally do a walk thru with one of your patterns!! That would be an awesome project video. Yes I did :) The buttons I found online and the fabric was a fine enough knit that I was able to cut out panels at the top and sew in the lace with not too much trouble. The buttons were a bitch to resew on though haha
@angelabenedict8 жыл бұрын
Sophia Grey It's always the buttons lol. I'd have to find an easy pattern for those who don't sew :)
