I love that Lydia grew as a character, more extroverted, got married, had a child and have a career BUT didn't grow out of being a goth. Great representation of goths not just being a phase or represent depression and other goth stereotypes. Also Winona still pulls off that look, she's so beautiful.

I just saw it I don't really feel it was that much of a quailty drop. The first beats it because it had a more streamlined plot but I don't think either film had an amazing deep plot. Most Tim Burton films in general are style over substance he's never had deep or strong stories in most of his films. The only real differences with this and part 1 to me was the first was more streamlined and the milk toast couple in part 1 helped ground the story were as when you focus more directly on Lydia and Beetlejuice it inherently becomes more fantastical in story and tone.

It's just...thanks to the cartoon, fans began shipping Beetlebabes/BJ X Lyds despite the glaring age difference (made all the worse when the cartoon intentionally aged Lydia down to "almost 13", essentially practically halving her age from her 1988 film age of 16 [16 is the legal age of sexual consent across multiple state lines, but taboos like what Betelgeuse essentially wants to do with Lydia isn't accounted for, for obvious reasons], just so she could be much more relatable to the younger child audience the cartoon was seemingly marketing to as its target demographic) and - shout out to the musical, even if it didn't yet exist at the time - "The Whole Being Dead Thing" (i.e. BJ being dead & Lydia still being alive) as well as Betelgeuse still being a "Creepy Old Dead Guy" (Sure, he was drastically toned way down, but he still had a shrine to Lydia in his mind & there were several instances of character dialog exchanges that skirted the line over what was acceptable, considering Lydia was a now portrayed as a younger child [albeit, still a perky goth one, for whom death seems to be an aphrodisiac], whereas BJ remained an undead, gross, slimy, underhanded, mischievous, smelly & slightly perverted conartist sleazeball, but his strong affection for Lydia kept him morally grounded...for the most part). Granted, even Lydia herself (or, at least, her original live-action actress Winona Ryder, who shares the same age as her character) has said in interviews promoting _Beetlejuice Beetlejuice_ that she kind of wants Lydia to end up with BJ despite the fact that her character was 15-17 when the original film came out in 1988 & Betelgeuse is over 600-years-old...and dead.

Thanks for the Spoiler Free Review, Lynn & Conor!! As a dark, foreboding man in my very early 20's I absolutely LOVED the original Beetlejuice (including the hilarious reference to the talking Marcel Marceau statue) and am eagerly awaiting going to see this flick!!! The late 80's was a goth's movie paradise with Ghostbusters, The Hunger, The Company of Wolves, Lost Boys etc. However pretty much anything by Tim Burton I will go and see! Word is some of my original high school friends (we are all now in our mid to late 50's) are gathering to go and see Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, it should be a rollercoaster of emotions but mostly some great times making new memories with some very dear old friends!!

I was actually considering NOT going! I loved the first movie so much, it always takes me back to a simpler, less serious time, when people seemed to have the time to stop and take a breath, enjoy the things going on around them. I just didn't want to risk tarnishing one of my special, dearest memories and there were so many ways this sequel could go wrong. I've seen it happen time and time again and it can, and usually does, detract from the original. I actually love the two of you- you're adorable but you're also very smart and intuitive and I know the bar was set high for you guys too so if you really liked it....I'm now actually excited to see it! At first, I was not terribly interested in seeing the movie because so much time had passed since the original film and this one. I was a senior in high school when the original one came out and in my mid-fifties now. However, the more that I saw the trailer the more that I wanted to see it. I saw it last night here in Nashville and fell in love with the movie. I saw it in a sold out theater that was gigantic and was filled with people of all ages. It was cool that a lot of fans came dressed in costume. I thought that the tone of the movie was perfect and found myself laughing out loud all through the movie. It was a blast and I can't wait to get a blu-ray copy of the film. The music choices were quirky for sure but I remember feeling how strange that a song like "Day-O" was used in the first film but grew to love it.

Plus, the naming of the films sell the sequel anyway. We should have the third film just to have it be _Beetlejuice_ spoken thrice (just as you do to summon/banish him) & to confirm whether or not Tim Burton, Winona Ryder & Michael Keaton will commit to making Beetlebabes/BJ X Lyds a thing officially (aside from the almost-marriage in both the original film & this sequel, plus the innuendo aplenty in the cartoon, as well as the "green card" excuse used by the musical) in spite of "The Whole Being Dead Thing" (similar to the canon Harvey Comics/HarveyToons/Harvey Entertainment "Casper & Friends" coupling of the titular "Friendly Ghost" Casper & "The Good Little Witch" Wendy) or if Lydia will actually die in the third film just so there would no longer be any reason to refuse pairing them (the age difference is nullified already now that Lydia is an adult & can make her own choices, not to mention the fact that Winona Ryder herself kind of already wants Lydia to be with Betelgeuse anyway, according to interviews promoting _Beetlejuice Beetlejuice_ but if Lydia died in the third film, then "The Whole Being Dead Thing" would be rendered void too, since both of them would now be dead & as we know, time passes differently between the mortal world & the afterlife of The Neitherworld).

I didn’t like Lydia’s settling for Deuchy guy (maybe, Ortho-like in some ways,bafoon type character). The music sequence in the church was a bit awkward and long, but I can see as Lynn said that that might have been intentional. Overall, I did enjoy it as a sequel. I thought Keaton was still believable as Beetlejuice without missing a beat. The mom’s character also made sense with the art work. Still weird and iconic!

I loved the movie sadly I went with kids so I did miss a few scenes for potty breaks lol but we all dressed up and had a great time. I love the original and the animated series. We watched both the night before we went to see the new movie 😂

I went and saw Beetlejuice Beetlejuice premier on the 5th with a friend, and a friend of a friend (my friend's friend). Furthermore, I liked it too; though throughout a bit of it I thought "it's good so far, not bad, though when does it start getting to all the juicy stuff?" In other words, when does it actually start getting exciting,? and well?? It didn't disappoint, as it definitely does reach a point to where I were like "here we go, now here's what I was expecting to see!" With that said, I loved the Aesthetics of the afterlife, that absolutely hit the sweet spot once it reaches that point, worth the watch and now I can't hardly wait till it comes out on DVD and Blu-ray. 👍 P.S. one thing I'm curious to know, is why does the relationship status between Lydia and Beetlejuice appear to be different, when comparing the movies with the cartoon? Like in the cartoon I get the impression of them being a couple and Beetlejuice would actually make Lydia laugh. Whereas in the movies she seems to find him quite obnoxious and can't stand to be around Beetlejuice, unless she feels like she has no choice but to tolerate him long enough to seek his help. 🤔

Funnily enough, Winona Ryder herself actually kind of wants Lydia to end up with Betelgeuse in spite of their former age gap & "The Whole Being Dead Thing" (shout out to the musical).

@@TherealRNOwwfpooh how interesting would it be if they come out with a 3rd movie where Lydia actually does wind-up having a change of heart for Beetlejuice? 🤣
@TherealRNOwwfpooh3 ай бұрын
@@Jamesfckoffscammers Not sure how that would work ethically or morally (unless Lydia dies, at which point the only true hurdle to their relationship is nullified, since the age gap was already voided the moment Lydia grew up & became an adult, but the separation between the living & the "Recently Deceased" will no longer matter if Lydia herself dies -- since she is the only adult member of the main Deetz family still alive -- or BJ is able to get her to commit to the marriage bit wholesale, thus allowing BJ to return to the world of the living), considering you can't really change Betelgeuse himself any because he'll always remain an undead, perverse, crude, greedy, mischevious, chronically lying, conartist trickster demon with a Lydia fixation.

I absolutely loved this sequel I was 4 years old when the original was released so i wasnt fortunate to watch the premiere at a theater So this was an absolute treat That opening scene has me in my feels 😭 I also dont understand why people keep comparing it to the original and how it wasn't as good Obviously nothing will come close to the original People need to enjoy this for what it is and its a great sequel for 30 + years later

I went to see it yesterday I loved it!! It's crazy this movie same age as me 36. My thought was the movie was great the characters are great they kept it original most of the scene and old cast❤

I agree with your assessment that Dafoe's character should have been completely edited out, thing is, I also feel the exact same way about Deloras. I think, as is, this would have made a much better one hour special on a streaming network.

It was a fun movie, but (spoiler alert)… I do think Beetlejuice getting banished again was a bit harsh and I do really hope he is okay and that there will be another sequel with a good ending for Beetlejuice. I know he was kind of a villain (an anti-hero? An anti-villain??), but he is adorable, hilarious and loveable. I just hope he wasn’t permanently ended… Random Goth Couple, please reply to this comment. Do you think he is okay? Do you hope he is okay?

We definitely think there's a sequel on the cards to be honest, this isn't the last we've seen of the ghost with the most I'm sure of it! 👻
@TherealRNOwwfpooh3 ай бұрын
Surely, he's not permanently gone, given the double fake-out ending to the sequel. I'm not going to say what it is, but it was something to be expected after he was banished for a 2nd time.
