This movie needed to get rid of Willem, Monica and Justing. The plot points surrounding these 3 dragged everything down. The should have focused of Winona getting to know her stepmom after the tragic death of her father, have the daughter spend more time with the young man and his messed up situation and throw in Keaton for a few minutes to stir up some nonsense. There is a brilliant movie in here but it got destroyed by too much unnecessary crap. Burton is brilliant when he has to fight against a small budget, give him way too much money and you get this.
@KRobinson-ko1ne4 ай бұрын
The thing is Tim obviously never wanted to do a sequel and because there was a demand the corporate mandates determined the film We gotta have more of Beetlejuice himself in the spotlight; it doesn’t have to be relevant to the plot. Don’t get me wrong it’s fun seeing Keaton revisit the character but it is bizarre looking back on the public perception it received in the past 35 years. He was meant to be the villain: a hit man and a sexual predator. But then he became a lead protagonist on a children’s show and a popular theme park mascot. Anyway the movie breaks really important rules about the afterlife, pulling some new ones out of its ass as well. So long as we are revisiting the Deetz family where the hell are the Maitlands?! They found a loophole?! And Charles immediately goes to the netherworld? Shouldn’t he have been confined to the Deetz/Maitland House? But yeah the movie is really just a retread of the first: it needs more Beetlejuice, it needs a cover of The Banana Boat Song (even though it makes no sense for it to be played at Charles’ funeral) it needs Lydia to be forced into marriage with the red dress and it needs another possessed lip sync to another pop song What’s funny is they throw in potentially interesting ideas but they only exist to get the characters to a familiar setting and set up a familiar circumstance and they’re done away with Delores the succubus was an interesting bit of world building, however she only seemed to serve the same function as the sandworm in the first movie. However they screwed that up by just bringing back the sandworm and having Beetlejuice randomly defeated by an out of nowhere loophole What should have happened was for Rory to just remain unconscious for the scene and for Delores to consume Beetlejuice at the last second. I think that might be what they planned but they’re like “no! We gotta have the snafworm: first movie! Plus we don’t want to sequel proof the film”

I feel like the plot should have focused on Arthur Conti’s character Jeremy trying to resurrect himself using Astrid. The scene where Monica Belluci’s Delores breaks out could’ve been the final scene of the film setting up the third film. 100% agree about Winona. I love her to death, but it felt like she was just playing her character from Stranger Things instead of Lydia. She basically just looked surprised and bewildered for the entire movie. The ending was also kind of a bummer compared to how happy and hopeful and silly the ending to the first movie was... to a point where I kind of WANT a third movie and a proper happy ending. Or is the joke that it's a happy ending for Beetlejuice, to basically keep haunting Lydia for the rest of her life? I dunno. Either way, it was still a very entertaining movie, and I agree with so much of your review of it!

Winona 4Eva. Mild Spoiler: *De-Aging process likely the reason, (ghosts don't seem to age in this Burton world) as Burton wanted practical effects, that Barbara & Adam were missed, but their love story was complete and would change Astrid's conflict w/ Lydia and maybe change Delia too. The Maitlands should've been used in the Epilogue w/ Lydia & Astrid meeting them on vacation in Jamaica with Harry Belafonte's Island in the Sun playing out the movie into the credits. Makes me think that was the loophole and maybe the idea behind the Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian script.

I loved all the plots and how they built towards each other. Though I agree Monica’s part could have been kept out. Maybe the most satisfying F bomb ever haha. I think the ending is purposefully ambiguous incase they go for movie #3.

Marianna I do notice the stripey mode. We agree on this one. Low expectations produce better enjoyment. By the end of the film we transition from Boomerjuice to the actual Beetlejuice. (Thank you Mr. Keaton.) I wanted Monica Bellucci's character to interact with the Juice more at the end: they just threw her away. And I suspect that you are too frustrated to even mention the 'Crow' 2024.

While I have my own issues with the plot, I find it interesting that everyone has different ones. This may be a sign that the movie did in fact a lot right. The only thing absolutely EVERYONE agrees on, is "JUSTICE FOR BOB!" 😆 The thing with Burton is, that he never has the plot in his focus, but how he can tell his story visually, and how many movie references he can sneak in. Burton will always prefer a somewhat mediocre script that leaves him much space to explore to a well written, tight one. In that regard, whatever each of us sees as a weakness, for him is only a scene that carries a small message. Be it a reference to a movie, be it a middle finger to his critics (and yes, there were some in this movie), or be it a little self-introspection. He often said that he identified with Lydia. In the first movie, she clearly was a reference to young Tim with his strange and unusual tastes that no-one seemed to share. In this one, I cannot fight the impression that he depicted a somewhat disillusioned, aged Tim who realizes that he sold away his ideals and became to some extent what he never wanted to be. In the first movie, Lydia opposes her parents' idea of turning the Maitlands into a TV-show, in the sequel she herself has become the host of such a show. No-one can tell me that this isn't a message. The dream ending was confusing, true. It was, for one, a reference to "Carrie" by Brian de Palma, even used the main theme of the soundtrack, which was also mentioned in the end credits. I am not entirely sure if that was all, or if it was indeed a hint towards yet another sequel. Burton himself said he didn't want to make another one, and if so, it would have to happen with a different director. Keaton is in his 70s, if they really want to add another movie, they have to hurry up. I _can_ imagine that Burton was pestered to build in an option for a third installment, and him not being happy about it, delivered in the weirdest possible way. Also, both Burton and Keaton always saw the character Beetlejuice as a villain, but while he was somewhat nasty in the first movie, this one had him downright ... heroic? I mean, yeah, he is a creepy guy with a crude sense on humor, but he stuck to his deal and even helped Lydia realize what a bad pick Rory was. What I would never have expected was Beetlejuice being so obsessed with Lydia, so, if I didn't know any better, I would assume that the 3rd movie would actually bring him and Lydia together. Yet, on what basis? Most of the original characters are dead by the end of the movie. Again, I don't think Burton cares, he might have put the hints in this movie for whichever director follows him.

I can see why Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis weren't brought back, as much as it would have been fun - they're ghosts frozen in time right? So having much older actors playing their old roles wouldn't have worked, they'd have had to do some de-ageing or something. Whereas Keaton can hide that beneath the makeup. I'm looking forward to seeing this, I adore the original and I'm just looking for a fun time without any expectations it'll meet or surpass the original, and your review has given me hope for that!
@ImpressionBlend4 ай бұрын
Keaton still looks older though, you can tell. I think they could have written in why they aged and played with lighting and makeup to make it work. The writers make the rules. Maybe they look older by choice or something.

Multiple staff members and actors were there when the script reading happened. When the scene was being filmed, there were cast and crew. Possibly there were multiple retakes, and still. NO ONE said "Hey.....uhhhh....you know that snakes aren't poisonous, right? 'Venomous' is the word you're looking for" NO ONE chimed in or decided to google if that was the correct verbiage?

Everything in this just was so entertaining, I had a huge grin on my face, felt like Tim Burton was firing off on all cylinders. As someone who wasn’t a huge fan of the original (but still like it) I too had low expectations for this one but also was excited to see Burton go back to his routes and … yeah. Loved the weirdness of it. Loved the comedy. Loved the set pieces and costumes/props/effects, and I really liked all the characters. Idk. Saw this a couple days ago and, as a Beetlejuice fan, was totally underwhelmed. There were too many useless new characters which went nowhere (Monica Belluci and Astrid's boyfriend were unnecessary) and even Willem Dafoe's actor/detective character was underutilized. I also think they brought in things which were too old for the main audiences (MacArthur's Park song, Soul train...) So disappointing. 5/10

I completely disagree, if you know the cartoon you can enjoy the chaos and the way Lydia teams up with Mr Juice. Also, she was a teenager, now she is a mother, of course her character won't act the same duh! Winona has the right amount of weirdness to her as before and including Adam and Barbara? For what exactly? Their story was completed and Lydia grew up, why would they want to hang aroung the house forever? Plus, with this many characters and parts of the Afterlife Buro, it would be waaay to many characters, which was also your complaint. Sure, Delores didn´t have to be there but it was a nice connection to B's past, especially as he makes hints left and right in the original. The first movie had a simple story and had to explain what happens after you die, this time you could just explore that world more, show more, which makes it much more entertaining.

The ending is a mix of it's alive(1974)and Carrie(1976).I didn't think that the movie was funny.The late night tv shows are ten times funnier than this. I mostly recall only one story which is the one where the boy wants to trick Ryder.I loved the claymation bit and the O'Hara's story with the snakes.I loved the musical score and the inclusion of the Macarthur Park song and the theme from Carrie.A mostly forgettable film but still pretty much entertaining.

I honestly hated it I also didn’t expect much coming in though so I’m not totally disappointed Still there’s so much you can do with this universe but the only surefire way to profit is the dreaded soft reboot approach They waited way too late to expand on the universe but first they made a cartoon show for young kids in which Beetlejuice and Lydia are friends(?!) and then they give the character a theme park attraction and make him a walk around character. Its a franchise that managed to be too big and yet not big enough at the same time, for its own good I mean
