It’ll drop off quick, the hype was real but the film itself is mid at best, it’s like watching an identity crisis, it has 3 plots going simultaneously and only one really goes anywhere with the other kind of just there in the background and shoehorned into the resolution. Beetlejuice’s ex could have been left out of the movie entirely and it would have changed nothing, and the subplot about Lidia being taken advantage of by an exploitative douche also could have been removed and still wouldn’t have affected the movie at all. The “main” plot of the daughter being tricked into signing her life away could have been a movie on its own and even that felt forced with random liberal propaganda thrown in and took way to long for the reveal, it’s like they couldn’t decide if they wanted to make a teen drama, a movie about a broken celebrity, a comedy or a musical. Only good thing about it was beetle juice and he kept speaking fucking French or Spanish or something at random. Made no sense at all

Also it would make more sense to make a spinoff about Beetlejuice in the afterlife, or harassing some new people, instead of going back to the same old family again. If they had any brains none of them would have anything to do with him after the events of the first film.., and they'd have 2 friendly ghosts to help them out with anything supernatural as they pretty much adopted Winona's character at the end of the first film...

I've watched the original since I was a kid as well as the animated Saturday morning cartoon which tweaked the story to make Beetlejuice and Lydia friends, I can't think of a reason for a sequel because I feel like the original movie wrapped up nicely, if I had to really think about it the only thing I would want to see is how all their lives go on, a teen girl being raised by live and undead parents, do her parents welcome the Maitland's help or do they resent them and feel jealous that Lydia might prefer them over her live parents, but that sounds like something that could be explored in a TV series not a movie even the cartoon was just Lydia and Beetlejuice going on wacky adventures both in the living and dead world. When I heard about the sequel I was worried like whenever I hear about a sequel or remake/reboot even more so when I heard Jenna Ortega was involved because since she's so popular now she'd more than likely take the spotlight and after hearing several reviews and reading over the plot I'm sad how it turned out, hearing how Lydia turns out goes against what we saw in the original where we were introduced to her as this sullen goth death obsessed girl, but by the end she's so much brighter and happier again taking one of our childhood icons and turning them into a mess. Another thing that bugged me was the story with Jenna's character being tricked by the ghost, it sounds very similar to Ghostbusters frozen empire and what happens to Phoebe, there was just too many things going on.

The original film, I saw it once and did not much care for it. So the idea of it getting a "sequel" decades later seemed even more surreal to me. It was popular enough to have both an entire toy line from Kenner and an animated show. But I think they took too long to make a sequel and this new film didn’t do anything new or interesting that’s memorable enough to make it have a long lasting impact. If you ask me, as far as new films are concerned, Twisters did the whole sequel thing better by comparison. And, they told a different story with completely different characters. They weren’t trying to copy the original film like so many sequels ends up doing. Hell, even films like Tron: Legacy & Top Gun: Maverick are far better examples of making a decent sequel decades later.

upper mid I would say, a 6 out of 10, nowhere near as funny and witty as the original but Keaton really made this film, the main drawbacks was the eye rolling Astrid romance scenes and the odd choice of Beetlejuice extending out his wedding ceremony with Lydia despite the fact that his ex is hellbent on getting him, not the mention that Beetlejuice just stood there and did nothing but scowl when Astrid and Lydia said his name 3 times, the only likable thing about that scene was Beetlejuice one upping the sandworm

This movie felt like a fever dream and had multiple random plotlines which ended up meaning nothing. In another lifetime this would've been a straight to VHS movie, a movie made by a B Team with a shoestring budget that makes a movie like this every six months. Both Big Bads are trivialized as a joke and thus are a waste of time. The ending cake scene was fun and interesting but that was about it. Lots of rah rah girl power all men are bad or stupid stuff in the movie too (just not heavy handed). Lots of random stuff that are completely forgotten in the film. Lydia can apparently see ghosts like Sixth Sense, this is only really used twice in the film, once to prove it with a 2 second gag, the other time because she can see an irrelevant character. The daughter apparently can see ghosts too even though she thinks the paranormal is fake which is established in the first movie why people don't see ghosts and why Lydia can see them (being weird and open to ghosts) -- make that make sense. This movie is in a weird zone of being a 5/10 movie which will be rewatched, it's wacky and Tim Burton, there are some redeeming aspects, there's just some eyeroll modern dayism literal lip service / one liners which will be dubbed out with AI soon enough. How Hollywood can't spring $100k for a good writer who can write a coherent story to ensure their movies at least make sense at the core level... who knows.

The three problems I had (SPOILERS): They overused the 'people mouth the song being played' thing - That was the worst part of the first movie and they used it several times in this one. The fact that they used the 'f-word' more than once so the second time it was bleeped out is very jarring and unnecessary - Just use the one 'f-word' you're allowed and be done with it there. Astrid is amongst the dumbest names of any character ever and everytime I heard that ridiculous crap, it disturbed my immersion. Besides that, I kind of liked it, though I would've preferred that they leaned more into the surreal afterlife portions more since that barely gets any screentime beyond what we've already seen in the waiting room of the original.

I cannot help but feel that 2010 to 2030 are going to be 2 decades known for terrible, average at best, Academically speaking trash films that were popular with mass peoples because they have low expectations and low standards on what makes a movie good, This is partly due to people not reading enough and not reading classics and from actual good writers or seeing master films that perhaps while dated for their time were amazing films that set the standard. Personally me, I just want some "Adult entertainment", when I was a kid in the 80's and 90's I seen movies that basically treated audiences as adults and some of them pushed boundaries on what you could get away with presenting for the rating system, You just don't get that anymore other than foreign films or rarely independent films. You also had Spawn, Witchblade, Blade, The Crow, films and TV that were darker grittier side to the superheroes represented. Horror films always had to take scenes out like Species and such for sexual content, and they had NR VHS that had to be put back in the XXX section of the VHS rental stores. I cannot help but feel that directors and producers have become cowards to a degree just making safe bets rather than something like Evil Dead and such.

That's funny. I think the first one is boring to bad, and I didn't laugh once. So, it's a repeat of the first one it sounds like.

I see so many “they dont make anything original “…but when the do , no one goes to watch . And one they continue a series , people complain. What…exactly do people want. And if you only listen to one review your deluding yourself .

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 sorry . Haven’t seen it and not going to. Why do they keep making classics?!!! Leave the original classics ALONE ! So disappointing. 😢

While people certainly asked for this in the past, no one was likely doing it now decades later However with the absolute slog of bottom of the barrel crap that has been infesting cinemas for the past decade, I will gladly accept an unimpressive unnecessary sequel

@@derigel7662 no, I am making good judgments based on years of watching movies. If you have eaten in the finest restaurants and then all that is left happens to be greasy fast food, there is a comparison. I am comparing what came before with what is now.

Jesus Christ. Mid at best? What a suprise. I'm so glad I dodged every reviewer and saw this movie with blind eyes away from critics. Because I knew you and every other shite reviewer on KZbin were going to shit on this solid enjoyable 7 to maybe 8/10 film because it's a sequel to an old film and we can't ever acknowledge those can be good (except Maverick every reviewing chud has to say that ones good which it is or else they'll be destroyed)

Force of Light girls said they rated it just under Top Gun Maverick, said it was very good. So, seems we're gonna get some mixed reviews on this movie.
