Just a few tips on types of trains, For long distance journeys 1000+ kms, - Rajdhani or Duronto Express. Durontos have lesser no of stops and mostly overnight. Meals included in both. (Bed tea, breakfast, lunch, evening snacks and dinner). - If both not available on the route, there will be other Express trains with just 2-3 hr longer durations. Avoid taking "Mail" trains, they would stop on nearly every single stop and have lowest traffic priority. For shorter distances, - AC Chair (CC) in Shatabdi Express, will provide meals/snacks. - CC in Vande Bharat, whereever it's available, fastest trains in India right now. Don't know about the meal part. - CC in Jan Shatabdi. Slightly slower than Shatabdi Express and no meals. - CC in Inter-City Express, yet slower but faster than other express trains. Some scenic routes also have trains with Vista Dome coaches, check for videos on YT, you'll know. Also, for meals, there are many food services which provide food from the local restaurants at different places. Just have to provide the PNR no, Train no, Coach and seat no. Each station has different food options. Just search "Online Food on Indian rail", you'll find plethora of them services.

Iam the train guy...there are different brands of trains in India..... There are local trains and intercity trains.... these are trains which you should board otherwise the experience is going to bad 1.Rajdhani Express (overnight long distances travels from country's capital to a states capital only ) 2.Satabdi(sitting class train only for day travel) 3.Duronto express (high priority given train for longer overnight distances) 4.Vande Bharat express (it's a new train only runs in specific stations) 5. Tejas express

They always made my traveling to college very fun one. It was quite gutsy to travel such a long journey like that in train though.. i am more than impressed, but i hope you travel more comfortably. A small suggestion. If you even again take an overnight bus ride in the southern part, please check if KSRTC AIRAVAT class is available. They are super comfy, especially the semi-sleeper. I take them regularly and no complain from my side in last 10 yrs.

The newer train coaches (LHB) are more packed. where an old AC2 coach would have only 48 bearth the newer one's have 54 so the seats are a bit narrow.

So, I saw that you guys got side lower and upper seats. Next time when your travel agent books your ticket, please ask him to fill the choices as lower only. In that case you will be getting the lower seat and if the lower is not available then it will give the side lower. A tip- I mostly book ticket in advance and if the season is off then the 2nd AC gets automatically upgraded to AC first if seats are available there.

You should tried First Class in Duranto, Rajdhani etc in Indian Railways . It is equivalent to sleeper train you will find in Europe. You will get plenty of space, plenty of width for sitting and sleeping, better food and privacy

Airports n Railway stations have pre-paid transportation counters. Its always safer to take that specially if you land at odd hrs. Get Uber app setup in your mobile. Uber is available in most big n 2nd tier cities. ... be wary of over friendly ppl.

I always book 1AC, first class. It’s only a few dollars more and in my opinion well worth it. I love India Rail. I only use the trains never fly domestically. It allows you a view of the countryside
