@@GoTravelOnTheCheap if you like agate’s, Jasper, and quartz/quartzite I am in heaven. We have a creek on our property that branches off the Mississippi River so we get some pretty cool find’s that tumble all the way down. Occasionally even get a few geodes. We have fossils from the Devonian period-Pleistocene Epoch. But, I miss climbing and caving and all thing’s mountains! 😂

Who owns this mine?
@weldenjon
@weldenjon Жыл бұрын
The claims on these mines have expired and are therefore no longer active. So, this is probably on blm land which is open to rock hounding. These guys want to keep the location undisclosed for obvious reasons. I will say this much though, to answer a previous posted question, this mine is located in northern Utah. Wish I could say more but I will leave that to the guys from "Go Travel On The Cheap" 🤫

@@GoTravelOnTheCheap I haven't been rock hounding in a long time. When I was a kid I traveled with a rock group up to Thunder bay Canada, stopping at amethyst mines along the way. We got some really nice pieces. We stopped at this small mine far off the beaten path, where the owner had been doing blasting on an above ground vein the day before. The blasting had exposed a lot of crystals, and had opened up a vug at the bottom of the pit. I remember standing in the vug as a kid, it was big enough to fit my whole body. My father handed me a hammer and chisel and I would strip off the amethyst in sheets and hand them up through the hole. We also found some garnet at another abandoned mine we stopped at. The trip was about 2 weeks, and we rounded Lake Superior. Beautiful country up there.

Destroyed a lot of material
@GoTravelOnTheCheap
@GoTravelOnTheCheap 2 жыл бұрын
Is there a better technique to use without "destroying" the material? Thanks for watching :-)
@therealkarlcolt7116
@therealkarlcolt7116 2 жыл бұрын
@@GoTravelOnTheCheap Yes. You take a battery powered roto-drill, drill evenly spaced holes in behind the material, then put feather wedges in and break massive chunks out that are attached to the host rock. From there you can trim the material off with a lapidary saw. often times people just get too excited and dont think it through, this results in destroying material. Not your fault, just helping you out for next time.
