John, the first thing you should do with ANY vintage pinball machine is disconnect all those plugs out of the back box (they're called "Jones plugs", the ones you used to electronically connect the lower box to the head) plus any in the lower box as well. Take either a wire brush or fine grit sandpaper and clean the male pins on the plugs. You only need to clean the outside edges and inside edges of the posts as they are round but fit in to square holes. You don't need to clean the female parts of the plugs, just insert and remove the male parts 2 or three times and that will basically clean the square receptacle part of the plug. You can spray a small amount of WD-40 on male pin part of the plugs to prevent future corrosion. This often times will eliminate a problem or two right away, if not, well, it's certainly required maintenance to do. Remember, no matter how many units you clean in the head... if there isn't really good electrical connection to the machine below... it still won't work... and you'll be frustrated trying to figure out why... Believe me, Jones plugs have a known history of failing due to neglect and corrosion, and usually it's and easy fix! (sorry this comment was so frick'n long... LOL)

One helpful bit of advice given to me when I got my EM was to first clean all the contacts on the Jones Plugs with a Scotch Pad and WD40. Those things tend to get crusty and build resistance and stop parts from working.
@benkieffer29058 жыл бұрын
To remove the rust from the legs and polish the metal at the same time use aluminum foil and ball it up and get it damp with water. Creates at paste as you rub. Trust me it's amazing. I do this on the rods on my foosball restores.

Safety tip John: lean the bottom back against the wall (the lock bar up and touching wall) then put the back legs on with it tilted back. If the stool is anything like the shaky table... Also recommend putting a screw on inside of leg plates so they don't get lost again. There are holes for just that reason in the plates.

Good plan, start with the credit unit. You will need your "wobbly" table behind the game to work off of so you have to unsolder all those wires. I have always just clean all the old greese off all the pivot points with your favorite cleaner and she should work. No new lube is needed. The scoring on player 2 is a sticky ball unit which is not skipping over the unused players fully, might be under the playfield.

The latch relay bank in the bottom back the playfield is hanging out, it should have some bolts to secure. New coil sleeves, clean all the plungers, some new coils stops, a rubber kit and it will play like new. Keep wd40 as far away as posible. Also a flipper rebuild kit will not harm. 4 player gottliebs aren't the most reliable pinballs out there (the player unit got excessive work) but plays fine.

With all those wire bundles, solder points, and relays, you're a braver man then I am john. LOL, but this is bound to be a fun and very informative restore as always and I'm looking forward to it. If it gets to be too much though a side video like the firefox and the Happ Gun to Red Tent mod would make for probably an easy breather as this one looks like a doozie.

I'm so pumped. Been waiting a year for this. I would use a vaccum with a delicate brush for heavy dust and to clean the relays and wires, and follow it up with compressed air to get in the nooks and crannies. Also, instead of Teflon Spray.. What do you think about using silicone spray?

I know it's been a couple years since you posted this video, but, I just purchased a Bronco EM machine for a new after school boys and girls center in Fremont, NH my wife and I just opened. I thought the kids would really enjoy playing this old school machine. It came with zero paperwork. I noticed from your video you had two copies of the electrical schematic. Is there any way I could get a copy or purchase one from you? The game has some similar functionality issues that need addressing and without the wiring diagram it's a shit ton of wiring and lot of guessing. You'll be helping a lot of kids have some pinball fun! Thanks Paul Go UMass!!

Hey John! This is Anthony. Thanks for taking my question and sorry to have got you stumped a bit. Now, i have played the original pinball machine of the Lord Of The Rings (it is 2003!) and was pretty hooked on it. The mall near me actually still has it in the arcade. I wanted to go for The Hobbit or Ghostbusters as runner ups. I love the game play on both of those. I don't think i would be unhappy with any of the 3 that i will finally choose. I guess i am going to play it by ear for the money i will spend. I wanted The Hobbit actually as my first choice but chose the Lord Of The Rings for price and i think it could be easier to fix down the road maybe? Of course it might be cheaper to fix than The Hobbit. As for Ghostbusters, getting a Pro version might be in the cards also. I will think of getting maybe The Lord Of The Rings and Ghostbusters if my brother could make some room for one of them in the house. i will be talking to him about that!. I did get my A+ certification for being a PC technician so i don't think i will be intimidated by any repairs and have solder experience also. I really appreciate you giving me an idea of where to go and 2 machines for the price of 1 Hobbit, that might be the ticket! I will let you know what happens! Thanks again! Anthony

That bronco gameplay is so slow. Thats how it was with pinball in the 1970's. I think the best pinball era was the late 80's early 90's. Taxi, Elvira and the party monster, or Terminator were great. Still happy John is giving some attention to pinball anyway. John's Ghostbusters pinball is great.

Personally I'd get it working 100% before investing into a full restore. I get a sense of regret from you about this pin lol Perhaps after all the work you will put into it, it will make it grow on you. Other wise you can sell it and take that knowledge to do a full restore on a em pin that you like the most. Perhaps I'm ignorant but when it comes to em pins, other then the history of each one, it seems play the same (Just pick the theme you like and there you go).

To be honest, I think you made the wrong choice, John. You might have found that the Bronco would have been that surprise, under dog that really earned some money at The Hanger. After all, classic pins at a quarter can really draw in the curiosity about how gaming used to be. Especially in contrast to the modern, dollar swallowing counterparts. It's like how a color chart starts at white and ends at black. The old and the new. The low and high end of pinball'ing. Because, the Xenophobe...I'm just predicting is going to do absolutely poorly. That game had home ports and a fair chance, back in the day. Nobody ever seems to talk about it. Despite being a 3 player game, I believe it will forever dwell at the bottom of your earnings list. Now, I would suspect a far better 3 player choice for the same cu ft space could be Rampage. At least, getting Xenophobe out of the garage is a plus.
@Johnsarcade8 жыл бұрын
That's interesting. I'd be willing to try the Bronco at the Hangar later. For now, I will work on it in the basement. It's low risk for us to try Xenophobe out. So.. time will tell.
