I feel like this song is an internal dialogue between me and myself. One part of me is telling myself that I can't live like this and the other wants to shut everyone and everything out to stay safe. The latter one always wins

That's a perfect way to describe it. I too can feel this way. But I've gotten better at winning over the anxious half of me. I will take the risk. Cautiously, yes, but it's better for me than not trying at all.

Pick apart The pieces of your heart And let me peer inside Let me in Where only your thoughts have been Let me occupy your mind As you do mine You have lost Too much love To fear, doubt and distrust Its not enough You just threw away the key To your heart You don't get burned 'Cause nothing gets through It makes it easier Easier on you But that much more difficult for me To make you see Love ain't fair So there you are My love Your heart's a mess You won't admit to it It makes no sense But I'm desperate to connect And you, you can't live like this Your heart's a mess You won't admit to it It makes no sense But I'm desperate to connect And you, you can't live like this Your heart's a mess You won't admit to it It makes no sense But I'm desperate to connect And you can't live like this Love ain't safe You won't get hurt if you stay chaste So you can wait But I don't wanna waste my love

This in my opinion is the best Gotye song. The soundscape is so cool, the distortions, the flutes, the shimmer, the whole percussiveness.... it's so different. I really like his songs where he putted in some emotional like this song & Eyes wide open. In Eyes wide open he found sounds to put into the song. And he went to a place where he felt happy and lucky. Don't know how it is with Hearts a mess but it sounds kinda emotinal to me and that's what I like about those two songs :) And he's got a great voice ofc ;) So more of this songs would actually be perfect! Yeees I remember being like 17 or 18, I'm 34 now. I was driving in moms car to drop off a package at ups. I remember I was listening to this song and the playlist I had. I remember the way the sky was gray with rain. I remember the green trees and the wet highway. And the red car lights ahead of me... I was at peace just listening to this song, just in the moment. A happy teenager.. yes I had my mental health and past life memories plaqued me but right then I was happy smelling the rain, vibing to this and driving.. :) and now years later with so many more experiences and met people and made memories.. and becoming Hindu,, I sit here smoking Ganja and found this song again. And I am brought back to that time :) A lot of things brought me here.. a lot of it I did not think I would make it through.. But I am at peace now :) 😊 and now I will vibe to this song High as an adult, when I used to vibe to it sober as a teen lol and just drift into the other reality I see.. The video tripped me out as teen so I'ma go watch it now on smokes lol XD😂😂🎉
