I LOVED watching you two react to this. I remember when this song and video hit in 2012 and it gave me chills then, when it won at the Grammys, and it still gives me chills. I interpret the music video as a story about a guy who has faded into the background while his former lover moves on (when the paint comes off her at the end and she's looking at him but in another chapter of her life while he stays stuck in the past). I also like someone's comment on here about the colors representing a puzzle with multiple pieces/sides to the love story. Fun fact: someone made a parody of this music video called "The Star Wars that I Used to Know" - worth a watch! @@nancyandrews398 Obviously a little late to the chat, but that's a great thought. Fitting that it's coming from what seems to be a woman (since this is youtube I'll say that I'm being 100% serious). I definitely remember the song from when it came out, but this is the first time I've seen the video. My thoughts where that the abstract body painting represented how we get outside of ourselves when relationships go bad. "She's a psycho." "He's turned out to be an asshole." The perception may be accurate but it might not be a true representation of who/what the other person truly is.

Indie was used to refer to independent artists. Indie is a particular sound that has little to do with past associations of independent music. Indie also encapsulates a musical philosophy. I listen to this song every day. Its amazing how deep it hits my soul, really describes my last marriage. To me, he talks about how she once loved him so much, but is hurt at how she has changed towards him. Then she comes back with how his actions affected her. That was my marriage exactly. He was a narcissist, & didnt understand why I changed. All he focused on was how he was affected, & basically I was no longer wife material. He drove me into deep depression, always made me feel like the least important thing in his life & that I was inferior to him. He saw my depression as I doing him wrong, that everything wasnt all about him anymore. If I tried to talk about it to him, all I got was a deaf ear. Like in the video, she tries to tell him that his actions caused her to do this, but he only sees that hes done wrong by her. All she can do is retreat away from him, cause he'll never get it. Evenually, he wanted me to leave & divorce. But, he did manage to start a relationship with someone before I left. Im sorry for the long rant, but this song really hits home.

I don’t know if y’all noticed but in the video she’s up close to his face “singing” and he starts singing over. Basically not trying to listen to what she’s saying but wants her to hear him.
