This a very helpful video. I keep seeing reference to "tiling" when I research gouache painting. That what it looks like anyway. This is also one of the very few time-lapse art videos that's actually instructive. Thanks.

Thanks JustAnotherLevel! I share your feelings about gouache being super intimidating. I only started using in the past year, and I'm still figuring it out. But it's a lot of fun. I encourage anyone interested in gouache to read whatever James Gurney has to say about it and to check out his video Gouache in the Wild (for purchase on Gumroad here: gumroad.com/l/gouache). Here's a particularly helpful post about dealing with the hazards of gouache: gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2015/06/the-seven-gouache-hazards-and-how-to.html

Fantastic piece! I love the realism and how you've deconstructed it . I agree with the limited palette concept....use it often. I'd like to do gouache for travel (plane)....I normally work in oils, so would be a pain. It seems the key is to layer confidently by using accurate color ..... "mixing" the color by way of value shifts instead of blending. Is that the idea ?
@dylanhodges81103 жыл бұрын
Did you put paint on a wet napkin in your pallet.... this is genius.

Thanks, Arthur! I'm using a butcher tray (www.utrechtart.com/Richeson-Butcher-Tray-Palettes-MP-03066-001-i1008002.utrecht). Keeps everything nice and contained and makes clean-up super easy. I honestly just wish I had a bigger one. And usually I squeeze my colors out onto a dampened paper towel (folded up into a strip) to help keep them wet during the painting session.
@Banacp94 жыл бұрын
Hey! I originally clicked on this video to observe the technique, but I’m really interested in that strip inside the palette. Is that watercolor paper or tape??? It looks like a handy way to save extra paint/keep the paint tray clean.
@darkcustomxxx72524 жыл бұрын
Excellent work. It looks like you're taking an oil painting approach building up from the darkest tones through the mids to the highlights. May i ask if you're letting each tonal block dry or going in wet on wet with minimal blending? Again, this is what i want to see with gouache. As a side note, have you tried doing these portrait studies using a gouache version of the Zorn palette, ie: black, vermillion and yellow ochre + white?
@mikecreighton4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks a lot. Yeah, I'm definitely taking an oil painting approach here... just trying to translate whatever I know about my oil painting process to this medium. I'm letting each tonal block dry, not going in wet on wet. Gouache dries so fast that it's hard for me to go wet on wet unless I'm using zero water. I'm using paint from tubes, btw. Funny you mention the Zorn palette, because just this evening I took a stab at it. Not with this specific chunky geometric flat brush approach. But still with varying sizes of flats. You can see the result here: www.reddit.com/r/painting/comments/erqo36/gouache_portrait_using_zorn_palette/ I ended up using ivory black, yellow ochre, titanium white, and a hue called "Spectrum Red" from Winsor & Newton, which was the closest to cad red that I had.

Paul, I'm not quite sure what you're asking here. The painting itself is titled "Mélisande". And it's a portrait painting done in gouache.
@Paul-tc8di7 жыл бұрын
I mean what type/design
@mikecreighton7 жыл бұрын
I can't say that there's really a specific name for this. It's a somewhat geometric abstraction of a portrait that employs rhythmic mark-making and fragmentation. Largely driven by the brushes I use (flats and brights) and the quick-drying nature of gouache.
