This video is GREAT. Seriously! I’ve been taking people through my gouache learning process in my vids and the way you used this paint really resonates with me. I used to be a big fan of oil painting, and I immediately recognized a lot of similarities in how you paint with gouache as I did with oil (like laying down a tonal sort of sketch in the background) and this makes me really excited to apply these ideas in my next series of experiments!! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I’ve learned so much from this video, not only from your voiceover and from your inclusion of your own trouble shooting, but also from simply just seeing this piece happen. Man. But today I have found that gouache is actually an interesting medium, but I only uses it with my watercolors to accent things in my painting, it works fantastic. Great video! The papertowel tip to keep paint moist is awesome - been struggling to keep my gouache moist and I use MGraham as well. One suggestion for your consideration - the angle of the video. 2:48 - this is already soooooo helpful. I will be rewatching this to see if I can make any measure of peace with the gouaches I was once *convinced* I needed, forgetting that procedural stuff with paint is way scarier than pencil. But it would be so nice to create stuff that has color.
@JaredCullum6 жыл бұрын
kendalchen it can be but you’re off to a good start. Most of painting is drawing with value temperature. Color complicates things so I wouldn’t worry about it for a while. If you get solid with value and drawing you’ll piece color together quickly. You could always get a small watercolor kit and make a little safety net of a painting first. That’s how I started with gouache. Mostly watercolor with pen lines and highlights- then gradually getting used to just gouache. It was a big step to stop using black ink lines for my sketches with color. Let me know if you have questions! :)

I am currently having a gouache phase. Using schmincke's hks designer gouache, wich I Totally am Geeking about quality wise :P what I love of knowing the different mediums is the privilege of knowing that one screwedup paper block purchase can work awesome for gouache. Specially when you work with primarely wc paints, that is a real blessing. The fact that thinner 200 grams of paper is not an issue is making me go jay over this product ( I have a canson jumbo block that was unemployed so far lol) but that concept of having an idea in your head and not worry as much as with wc is really freeing. Well for me it is anyways. I love how you call it a sticky layer. Thats how I refer as well. if you have acryllic gouache you can dry between layers to prevent smudges.
@JaredCullum6 жыл бұрын
A .Vultink I totally agree about the paper! :) I love Schmincke. They’re a great brand and I’ve emailed with their reps and they’re so kind and helpful. Great brand. I wish they were more readily available locally. I used to order them online but I burn through so much for illustration I switched to daniel smith so I could get it locally.
@AafkeVultink6 жыл бұрын
I am blessed to live on the german border ( well on the dutch side, its a five minute drive,haha ), so schmincke is widely available and on a decent price for 4 euro per tube. But if you want a more local contact try the local distributor: their sales department will often be more helpful - specially if you want to do a review- than HQ though their marketing team is really awesome for when you have product questions. A Local shop cant make those calls as it is business as usual with distributor contracts hehe. Just a free tip. I know schmincke has a local main distributor in the us. I just dont know their info. But I'd say ask any shop that retails schmincke, Im sure they can give you more advise on this.
@JaredCullum6 жыл бұрын
A .Vultink wow!! Oh I bet it’s beautiful there. I have never been but would love to go painting there. They do! I know who it is but I’ve never made the call. I just got in the habit of using Daniel smith which is matched in strength but I miss how fluid Schmincke was. DS is noticeably more grainy. I think it’s the ox gall in the paint. Thanks for the tip!
@AafkeVultink6 жыл бұрын
We have some really cool nature reserve areas here, something the dutch did became quite good at. Constant battle though but very much worth it. The germans have those really awesome tiny churches wich just beg to be painted :P Ds is known for granulation, that is the grainy stuff. If you want less granulation but schmincke is to pricy you can always check for sennelier; senneliers do granulate but definately not as much as DS: as for lightfast that is with most of senneliers not an issue. I like them for my botanicals

This video was great!! I'm trying to learn gouache but I think I've made a terrible mistake lol. In the past year I taught myself how to draw and then started using copic markers. I decided that the next challenge would be to tackle my biggest fear, painting, as in with an actual brush. I fell in love with gouache paintings that have a similar style to yours but I'm really doubting that I'll ever get there. Should I have started with watercolor maybe, or stuck to markers? Anyway, if I don't end up giving up, I'd love to see more gouache walkthroughs and if you could include shots of the palette you are using as you go, that would be great... I just like seeing how much water you use when you mix the colors, and just a bit more "behind the scene" to the painting. Thanks!!!

LonelyAlien good feedback! You are on the right track. It’s a slow climb but most of painting... like 90% is drawing. I actually started by only drawing in ink for a long time. At the time I had no interest in painting and never thought I would try it. Then I totally fell in love in the same way and went down this path. Drawing with the marker helps see the contours which is a huge important lesson. My advice would be feel free to use it freely in your sketchbook. Start however you feel comfortable experimenting. Draw in ink and do a watercolor wash and then gouache just the highlights or foreground. Then try watercolor with gouache. Then gouache. Every time you switch it up you will learn a new way of thinking about it! Feel free to reach out with any questions! :)

Hi Jared, Thank you for your video. Can you tell us a bit about what sort of easel you are working with? I want to take on plein air but still finding out a good but super simple platform to work with. I get a bit messy and complicated and that hurts my painting. Thanks again!
@JaredCullum7 жыл бұрын
Hello! This easel is actually hand-made. It's very very simple if you want to make one. It's called a "Gurney Easel" because the idea and basic form came from James Gurney's idea for a lightweight sketch easel. He has plenty of instructional videos using it and even has a video you can buy for cheap that shows you exactly how to make one. The basic concept is that it is two pieces of plywood about 1/4 thick that are hinged together. The hinges are the expensive part because they're friction hinges from southco that hold open at certain positions. You could go to a home repair shop and they could cut you a piece of plywood. It's very easy. Or I've seen some people go to a cigar shop and buy a discarded empty cigar box cheap which are actually really well put together. You could add friction hinges or a chain/ribbon to have it open to a certain point and stop. there are many many options. If you're new to plein air I would suggest just buying a piece of plywood or foam core or a clipboard and just sitting outdoors with it for a while. Figure out if you actually love painting from life out doors before you commit to investing too much into it. hope that helps!
@Angelina_Rose7 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Jared! Very helpful. Yes, I have seen Gurney (love him) videos and him talking about his easel although never paid too much attention since I thought I wasn't a plein air painter, gonna check those again ... but you made it sound less complicated hahah. I am not that new with painting, more a studio painter, the whole plein air set up always bothered me tho (I had a french easel and gave it away because honestly it took me forever to open it and set up haha sorry I know it sounds silly but that is the truth) but I want to give it a more serious and steady try to plein air. Definitely doing this, sounds easy enough. Thanks again for sharing! Your paintings are great! Love how the lemon and the texture of the avocado came up, very nice. :)

Great video! I am the same, watercolor is my main medium but I am so curious and drawn into gouache, and also horrible at it jajajajajaj. But I think that your approach is a very good practice (ill be trying it out) in the sense of letting brushstrokes be more impressionistic, for some odd reason i find myself trying to be hyper realistic with gouache when its just not my style at all. What size was your brush on this? And also, do you have a hard time deactivating gouache from your travel palette? I set a WN gouache palette and don’t know if its the paint itself but it just granulated if I deactivate it so i need to use the paint straight from the tube. I ended up filling up 5ml eye drop bottles (a huge hassle) but it actually works great and i keep them in a tiny pouch now in case that helps for your travel question. Keep it up!!!!
@JaredCullum7 жыл бұрын
Mara Fernandez yea man! The thicker strokes allow you to learn to work with it faster. “Realism” can be a trap unless you’re really dead set on that style. I was honestly a matter of time for me haha I have 2 kids and I work in kids book illustration so when I paint to study or for fun I have almost no time. I started using bigger brushes and thicker coats and it really pushed me to learn it and to go faster. I used a 1/4 inch here or a 10 flat. I usually use a 1 inch flat or half inch flat. Yea- dry gouache is tough. I use a palette that seals because it dries so chalky and messy. I just don’t let it turn over and pour water back into the dry mess and stir. Otherwise I use straight from tube and toss the little left. Gouache isn’t easy to travel with but I think it’s worth it for the results you get once you get the hang of how it moves and layers. :) good luck out there!

sujanith tottempudi absolutely! I plan on it. I’ve been traveling a lot lately and I keep a watercolor box in my pocket so since I’ve been on the road most of what I’ve done for these lately have been watercolor. I do plan on working on more gouache demos.

What do you do with any leftover gouache paint that on the wet paper towel?
@JaredCullum7 жыл бұрын
Grannycowpastures I have a separate bin that I never tip over I will scoop it off if there is a big chunk of it. It dries chalky but I don’t let it tip out and can add water and stir it back to life later. That’s the yellow box I refer to in the beginning. If there’s not much I toss it. I usually try to use little at a time. You can kinda see me having to reload a bit for yellow ochre and especially white. :)

If you’re using the gouache you put in the pans how do you rewet it? I find that they dry too hard to use even when moistened. I have a set of caran d’Ache pan gouache, but it’s not made anymore. They remoisten as easily as watercolor. I’m trying to find a way to keep using gouache in pans when they run out.

MBirdsong if I wet it a couple minutes early and hit it a couple more times and stir in the water it were up well enough to use. Probably not for anything large but for a small sketch I can get enough easily. I’ve heard of people experimenting with dropping glycerine in it. I might try that soon.

Excellent video. Thanks a lot. I'm just starting with gouache and your video is very inspirational. Are you drawing from real life or from a photograph? By the way: What's that lovely background piano music? I know this piece (Chopin?) but I just can't remember what it was... Thanks :)
@JaredCullum7 жыл бұрын
Marcotronic thanks very much! Good luck with gouache. Be patient with the curve of getting used to pushing it around. It won’t take long for you to get a sense of control. For personal studies I try to always work from life. This time and the one I’m posting this week are from photos for the sake of instruction. I’m a stickler about that though. I have 2 kids so a lot of times I can’t leave anything set up. If I did everything by strict tradition I wouldn’t get anything done. Let me know if you have any questions as you go! I’m always happy to talk shop :) good luck out there!

What size is your bakers tray
@JaredCullum3 жыл бұрын
I was using a little 9x12 but recently switched to a jasper tray from Holbein which is larger but has low walls.

WHAT DO U DO WITH YOUR GOUACHE PAINTINGS? SELL THEM?
@JaredCullum6 жыл бұрын
Allan Smith I sell them or keep them. After a while I toss them in the trash if they don’t mean anything to me.:)

what if you have leftover paints in that paper towel? kinda a waste to throw them :(
@JaredCullum6 жыл бұрын
Loric B if you flip to the beginning there is a yellow palette with a closing tray. I usually try to just use a little at a time and don’t often have left over. If I happen to have a lot I’ll scrape it into that tray and let it dry. For the most part though gouache isn’t too crazy expensive so I’m not that worried. Plus it’s use it or lose it. I’ve saved tubes carefully and had them dry in the tube on me. Haha
@levinhale85846 жыл бұрын
Jared Cullum i see! wow how long ago did you leave that tube for hahahaha. how long have you been doing life studies to get to this level? i just wanna keep my expectations in check
@JaredCullum6 жыл бұрын
Loric B you’d be surprised! Gouache goes on you pretty quick so waste what you can while you can haha I’ve been painting for about 3 years now. BUT i spent a lot of time focusing on drawing before that which helped. If you want to skip a couple years focus on DRAWING first and then VALUE for a while. If you can learn to draw and find angles accurately and see value decently you’ll cut years off your progress. Academic painters spent years only doing black and white and weren’t allowed to touch color for a reason. It’s confusing and muddles he process. If you get a little secret sketchbook and draw only in ink for a while with no erasing it will help push you. Also- copy greats. I learned a ton from going to the library and getting books of painters and then doing mini copies in my sketchbook. It won’t take long. Classes at New Masters academy and Schoolism go a long way in learning quickly. If you get into being self aware and focusing on improving little things (skull, value, anatomy, composition, contour drawing) before you know it you’ll produce better pictures.
@levinhale85846 жыл бұрын
Jared Cullum Thanks! Wow I didnt expect such a nice answer. Thank you again. drawing only in ink sounds scary but its a good idea. I have been doing copies of artists I like too, though it is a bit demotivating to compare the results and sometimes I am frustrated when I dont know how the artist produce some particular look. How do you tackle those times?
@JaredCullum6 жыл бұрын
Loric B oh yea! That’ll happen. I still feel that way sometimes. All you can do is keep going. You will get better. That’s part of why drawing in only ink is important with no eraser. The biggest hurdle to getting better is attachment. You have to push yourself to abandon attachment to Individual drawings or paintings. When you draw in ink only there is no way to make a perfect drawing. It’s going to be off. You will have to push yourself to move past mistakes and perfection. It’s also important to keep it secret. No spouse or family or anyone sees it. That way you have some clearance to make mistakes and just keep going. Also draw everything you see. Rooms. Car. Pepsi can- salt shaker whatever. You’re goal is mileage and quantity. Every little sketch you do helps train your eye to communicate the contour lines. It can still be discouraging. Art- expressive as it is can be both work or discouraging at times. You grow exponentially if you can push through that. Remember also- that it’s been my experience that things will go well and then I’ll hit a wall and for some reason just can’t get it right. When I keep going through that I have a break through and improve. It’s like- fun, easy, hard, harder, near failure, GROWTH and the cycle starts again. So be encouraged if you struggle. You’re digging through the mud to strike gold. We’re in this together ;)

you can't tilt the box? upside down? can't hear)) I need to put in bag
@JaredCullum6 жыл бұрын
dicloniusN35 yea.. haha I think the best travel with a bag is just to bring some tubes and a watercolor tin. However, for my yellow box- I made a canvas bag with handles so I can set it down inside with paper towels and brush on top and carry by the handles.
@JaredCullum6 жыл бұрын
dicloniusN35 if you don’t want to fool with making something you could always hire someone on Etsy! :)

dont understand) i russian hobo without money and food )) hire someone Who will hold my box with gouache straight? i dont want it to flow out)) need box for gouache) Not about you painting ) sorry bad eng) painting is great without any rotation)
@dicloniusN356 жыл бұрын
thks ))) now i should think how to put gouache from jar to tubes)))) were get empty tubes?)) And this with silicone thing not good? spill?
@JaredCullum6 жыл бұрын
dicloniusN35 I meant you could hire someone to make a bag that has handles to carry it upright. It would spill. I recommend getting some tubes on sale when you get a chance. Just a couple tubes of gouache and you can mix in a plate or most anything. The box would be fine but it will spill if it tilts so that is a problem. Hope that helps!

How long did the Still life take in real time?
@JaredCullum6 жыл бұрын
Ben Migliore phew well- it was a little while ago at this point but most likely 2 hours and some change. I can only record for 2 hours until the camera dies haha and i was able to record it through.
