I think the thing about fountain pens is that they intersect with SO MANY subcultures, all of which are very different. You have crafters, scrapbookers, wet-ink sketch artists, stationery fans, dudes in flatcaps who smoke pipes and like pocket knives, straight razors, and moustache wax, steampunkers who like old Victorian and Edwardian gadgets, people who like luxury brands like LV bags, BMVs, and fancy pens, and more. Fountain pens overlap with ALL of them.

I’m a Grade 2 and 3 Teacher in Canada. My students are always fascinated by my fountain pens. This year, one boy has shown particular interest, asking me technical questions about how they work and their history. In the winter I asked his parents if it was ok for me to give him a pen as a reward in a vocabulary game we regularly play. They said it was fine and so I gave him a Preppy. Well, of course that led to other students wanting one as well. I bought a bundle of Preppies and extra cartridges, and to my surprise, there haven’t been any ink explosions or messy accidents. A couple of nibs have been damaged by too much pressure, but that’s about it. Two sets of parents have even bought their kids extra pens, though they were wiser and got disposable ones such as Varsities. Keep up the great work. Your pencasts are a much loved routine of my Saturday mornings.

Loved Brian’s ink tour. I’m starting to fall down the fountain pen ink rabbit hole, and want to ask: will you come out with an “ink-hoarding dragon” sticker as a companion to the “pen-hoarding dragon” sticker? I’m starting to understand that feeling about using an ink I love but am not sure I can get more of.
@Dosbomber7 ай бұрын
That would work out very nicely for me. I have a crude storage system for my growing collection of pens & inks in the form of those plastic "Sterilite" totes with locking lids. It's sufficient, with room for more, but not exactly elegant. Having a pen-hoarding dragon protecting one, and a new ink-hoarding dragon to protect the other would be ideal identification labeling that would bring a smile to my face every time I need them. 😄

@@Dosbomber I keep my pen ‘stuff’ in a small three drawer chest which has deep drawer space, and another little chest about the same size that has shallow drawers, like a map chest. A keeper or watcher to sit on top is something to think about now!

The oldest bring the Fortingall Yew, (approx 5 thousand years old), and ponder the things that have happened in the world while it simply stood and grew and remained silent. Hi Drew! Hi Brian! I’m 13 months into the pen hobby and can’t thank you both for taking the time to create the Pen Cast. The hobby is my relief from my 6 day work week in healthcare. So it is a kind of quiet meditation for me when I explore my inks and create crazy swatches or if I journal. I attend a monthly local pen club and I get approached for my inks and swatch books and that’s how I will ask someone if they want to try my fountain pens. It’s not for everybody but I am thankful for the hobby. I have met all kinds of creative artistic people, to professionals and to fellow healthcare workers. But no matter how busy I am I need to have my time slot to watch the Pen Cast where I can learn more about hobby, learn about new products and get a good laugh from Brian and Drew from their humor. So for me the Pen Cast is a must weekly TO DO priority. It would be great if you could talk about the fancy nibs of Sailor and Pilot…I’m very interested in those. Maybe possibly we could see some writing samples with specialty nibs. Ready to get serious about investing in more higher end pens. So I will have lots of questions for Drew and Brian. Also I have a PenLux pen, would you consider carrying more pen colors of that brand as well as some Taiwan ink brands? Seeing that vintage OMAS ink made my day…I joined the hobby too late for that! Thanks for all that you do weekly for pen community!

Brian, to call that video project a labor of love would be sheer understatement. Happy birthday, Rachel! On mishaps being part of the culture: I've got a certain ink that's been too dry for a certain pen. Last night I filled a sample vial, added two drops of dishwashing liquid, reinked the pen with the mixture, and WHEEE!! Now, when I use the pen, I'm ready with a paper towel to waylay the ink when I get a sign that a blurp is coming, and I am gradually diluting the effect of the dishwashing liquid in the sample vial. As much hassle as that is, I am thrilled that I now have a well-flowing ink in my pen and that my ongoing dilution will eventually reach that sweet spot. In addition, the hack adds to my fountain pen milestones, like first nib swap, first barrel-fill conversion, etc. So, within reason, I am on Team Mishap.

I like to see your take on best pens/nibs for print writing, which are imho more B or BB nibs. Stubs are fine, but they vary too much in line width, which is, again imho, not ideal for a uniform balanced typeface. Not only the nib is important, also the feed for providing enough ink for the broad nibs. And of course the subject shading is closely related to broad nibs. I am still looking for the perfect broad smooth nib/pen (no stubs) for writing in print and with shading inks. Thank you for your endless passion and energy you invest into our beloved hobby. He talked about editing them together so Mum gave him a movie editor for his birthday. You put the movie reel on one side, fed the film strip through a little backlit viewing window and wound it onto a reel on the other side. Then you moved through the film one frame at a time by winding that reel by hand. You marked where you wanted to edit and then cut and spliced the film strips together. Needless to say, not many of those home movies got edited.

Alright, you asked for input, here's mine. I am photographer, specializing in analog. Not only that but I sub-specialize in large format. Medium format is great too, although there's a bit of miniature format (35mm) in the mix. Shooting 20 large format sheets of film is possible in a day, but that wouldn't include developing, much less scanning or printing in the darkroom. And, if not scanned, these are not included in the count of bajillions of photos taken. Here's the other thing though about recording photographs on physical film and printing on paper: In 50 years time, anyone can look at the image by picking it up and looking at it. How many digital files will be viewable then? The question of whether anyone WANTS to see any of these images is debatable, but that's not my point. :) Great show! Thank you for putting this all together and posting.

I like pens, so much so I got Montblanc rollerball pen fillers and put them into G2 cases. Got through about 20 pages of paper before the pen fillers dried out. I wanted to get the best writing experience I could get, and the pen fillers weren't cutting it. I looked over an article about the best rollerballs and gel pens, and all the way at the bottom there was a note saying "if none of these work for you, try a fountain pen". Looked up fountain pens on KZbin, found Brian Goulet, got a Pilot Metropolitan, and I've been hooked ever since.

At some point those videos of your parents and other family members will be very precious to you. Granted you have quite a bit but perhaps seeking to isolate key moments that will bring back lots of wonderful memories are best to keep.

I noticed a classmate of mine using a Lamy safari one day before class. That's what got us talking, how I introduced him to bottled ink, and gave him a sample of Diamine writer's blood

I recall you had brought up Noodler's Blue Upon the Plains of Abraham OG Batch & Batch #2, which are discontinued indefinitely as WonderPens have dropped the brand. On that note, I have a few bottles of Noodler's Raven Black before that went away of the Dodo bird.

Two pens to total under $100 if I’m picking: one regular edition Twsbi Eco, one Sailor Procolor. Eco in broad for fun with inks, Procolor in fine for dealing with all types of paper. Sailor’s steel nib is surprisingly good.

Nice choices, good combo.

@@s.n.11 Thank you! I picked up a Procolor out of curiosity earlier this year and have been liking it. A shame they don’t distribute them in the US.

39:40 I learned cursive in kindergarten, and calligraphy in 5th grade. In 5th grade we were all about stationery! Stickers, pens, and pencils. I spent a lot of allowance on these things. I remember buying special pens, pencils, etc. when we went Christmas shopping in Indianapolis at that age. I’d say I could have been ready around 8-10. I got into fountain pens when my kids were teens (about 2 years ago). My daughter is slightly interested in fountain pens but more into other art supplies. My son not at all.

Kindergarten most 5 years olds can't even really write at back in the 1980s or 1990s US and probably before that.

Great pencast! Brian: I have always thought that you would be a person that could really enjoy archery! I myself do traditional archery and 3D contests. I think you would really like a traditional bow that is made out of beautiful wood. Also, instinctive shooting is more fun than having a bow with all the bells and whistles, I'm sure you would agree. Getting a bow that is made for longer drawlenghts can be difficult. My advice is to go to a archery shop for example and let them measure your exact drawlenght. With that information you can see what bow offerings are available with your drawlength. There are some amazing bowyers (people who build bows) in the US and some great stores where you could try different types of bows that can accomodate to your drawlength. It's not that uncommon as you might think. A lot of people have longer drawlenght than the standard 28" (inch) Anyway, love this pencast! It's always the highlight of my week! Greetings from the Netherlands

Fond Memory: In the 5th grade of my French Catholic boarding school in Thailand, we had to write with fountain pen in Thai, English, and French. I spent that summer with my grandpa who showed me his and my dad's old notebooks written with nib pens. I thought I was a big shot with my fancy little pilot pen, which I could just squeeze the tube to draw in the ink. 😂😊😅

Mika, learn to knit! It's endlessly therapeutic to play with yarn that you think is beautiful. There are lots of KZbin videos, but better to find your nearest yarn shop and take a class there, because you'll meet other knitters there.

Thank you for being yourselves. What I did during this episode was plan for a fountain pen as a birthday gift to my mother, where I took a whole lap around possible options and still ended up on the Al-Star with M nib and a converter, Rhodia spiral notepads and access to any of my inks at all times. I guess it is technically easier to buy the RIGHT fountain pen for someone you know very well, but much easier to just go for it when you're simply taking a chance on somebody maybe getting into the hobby. Overthinking is a dangerous game where the pieces often move without your consent. Speaking of which, have you ever had any occasions when you've waaay overthought a decision to buy, or not buy, a certain pen/ink/notebook, and how did it turn out?

Love the ‘currently inked’ section. Also, maybe a spotlight on pen adjacent things - paper (different bindings, rulings, etc), letter writing stuff, pen comparisons (line up all the top 10 pens in a price range and show the big differences), live swab top 10 inks (or ink samples), recommendations that are non fp related (like the podcast the Nib Section would do), more guests from in the community or people who use FP’s like urban sketchers (ie Liz Steel), more photography stuff with Glenn, more warehouse and shipping stuff, behind the scenes re the website (what do you do intentionally. Like why is that “free ink” thing now in the bottom of my browser), etc. Thank you all for what you do. Thank you community!

Hello Drew, Tron legacy is one of my favorite movies of all time. If you don’t get around to watching it you should listen to the soundtrack. It is considered one of the best movie soundtracks ever made.

Love your podcast. Just want to share my own particular policy of using my pen collection which is at 8 currently. I write a kind of prose poetry consisting of paragraphs and I use a different pen for each paragraph. I find that each pen at a particular moment in time lends a certain flavor to the paragraph, so much so, that I tend to give the pen a name, like Basho, or Amadeus, or Zato, Sailor Sakura, Lamy Vista, Pilot Custom 94, respectively. It might be crazy, but I like it. Keep up the great work.

I was wondering if you guys could go over the naming conventions of the Kaweco nibs. I went looking for nibs, clips and other Kaweco accoutrements and could not figure out what was meant for or fit on the different Kaweco products.

If you guys got a chance please do a video regarding the best well known Vietnam ink domestically, brand name: Queen. I bought it on my vacation. Very surprise with the flow and smoothness it offers.
