Gourami Tank: Guppy Problem Solved?

Here's a "Before and After" look at my planted 55 gallon Gourami Tank. I have a Guppy that keeps dropping babies in here so I added 6 Bala Sharks in hopes that they eat the Guppy Fry.

You could try crushing those peas and drop them off near gold gourami. Makes it easier for her to gobble some up.

Good video Dan. Sorry about the gold gourami. She was my favourite. Looked so good against the leaves of the tiger lotus.

I have two pearls and two gold gouramis in a 60 gallon. They are lovely fish. I also keep 22 x-ray tetras 8 phantom Tetras and I have five neon tetras that are left over from a larger group . I just got a Betta also but he's going in a 29 gallon with a large school of ember tetras and some Pygmy Cory's . I had guppies but I rehomed them just wasn't into them .

Angelfish love baby guppies ! Also the size of her drops should decrease and stop at some point. I must admit I never tried to isolate a female guppy and see how long she can drop fry without a mate. Might be interesting ?

I’ve read that epsom salt mixed in the water is like a laxative for the fish. Maybe try it in a bowl if you haven’t

The sharks are gonna look great once they settle in and start exploring more. Hope they don't grow to quickly so they can stay longer! Also that clown loach is getting huge!

I can't wait for your soon to be 200g+ tank. First the clown loaches and now bala sharks, two groups of monsterfish that will be over a foot long :)

And why do you say the bottom-dwellers will get ich first? Does the disease hang out in the substrate if it's in the tank?

Sort of. It's part of the life cycle. The cysts erupt on the fish and the ich larvae develop in the substrate. When the larvae hatch they swim up in search of a host. Any fish that are already on or near the bottom stand the greatest chance of having the "swimmers" find them and attach.

I transferred one of my blue gouramis that was getting bullied to my guppy tank. Yep, the bro just ignored the fry :(.

I have a dwarf gourami in my 40 gal.. so far, still LOTS of guppy fry.

Hahaha...... the Guppy invasion syndrome. Certainly changes the whole tank dynamics. I really thought the Gouramis would have kept them under control. The Bala sharks are highly unlikely to take the fry, very gentle fish with underslung mouths

@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly I also have Seachem Fluorite gravel which might be an issue for any earth eaters. I was thinking of one as well until the substrate became an issue. Not looking forward to changing to a sandy substrate. This also takes out Rams

Nice update and little talk about quarantining fish. Yes all will not have fish tanks to quarantine the fish. I think buying healthy fish immediately once they arrive at the fish stores will reduce the spread of infections. Just my opinion

Depending on the store, it is much safer to purchase fish that have been there for a while. Most diseases come from imports anyway.

I’ve always wondered how people deal with breeding in their tanks. But Yeah, I guess if you have fish that likes eating the fry, it’s usually not a problem? I was thinking of putting guppies with my Gouramis as well (I have a tank but I’m still planning on what fish to have.) thinking that maybe they’ll eat the fry? But I also wonder.. what sex are your Gouramis? I was thinking it could be fun breeding them but I’m not sure how well they get along, what male/female ratio to have... Pretty sure I’d need to remove the females bc the male tends to be aggressive protecting the eggs..? Is this a must if I have a 55 gallon?

I don't think the gourami was too good at eating the fry, and I'm sorry, but I have no idea what to tell you about breeding them. I've always kept males only for their color.

Oh really? I’ve heard Gouramis were semi-aggressive so I thought that having more than one male was a no-go... But it’s worked out well for you then? No fighting or so..? If that’s the case I’ll do a bit more research and maybe have more than one male, they sure are beautiful!

@@moon_wolfk7456 No, I wouldn't try to keep more than one male unless you have a very large tank. They'll fight till you only have one, in all likelihood.

Most people use clove oil. Look up "euthanizing fish" and you'll get lot's of humane options, but the clove oil is the most preferred.

No, the gourami won't both guppies, but guppies may nip th gourami's fins. I'd try it. It's low risk at worst.
