I had one once that really enjoyed interacting with me. I noticed it would always stay by the front of the tank when I was watching it. I started out by putting the tip of my finger at the surface, and eventually it would come up and nibble on it. I then started putting my whole finger in the water, and this gourami would swim over and wrap its whole body around it. It changed my whole perspective on keeping fish.

I bought two blue gouramis around five years ago. They were extremely close and peaceful, one passed away at 3 years old, so I purchased a opaline gourami and they got along perfectly plus very peaceful around my other fish. Now that the oldest blue is getting slow and weaker the opaline almost acts as a protector. I noticed a tiger barb that I had would nip his fins and the opaline would chase it off! The tiger barb is now gone and he’s living out what I think will be his last year!

I always have at least one Gourami in every tank I do. Very characterful fish. Lots of people look to Cichlids when talking of fish with personality, but Gouramis can definitely compete. As for aggression, I've only ever noticed it when they outgrew their tank. If they don't have enough personal space, I find they relentlessly pursue tetras and the like. Once my Opaline hit about 3.5 inches, it became very aggressive until I upgraded the tank size. It had all the same fish in there, but now with no aggression at all.

I’ve had my blue flame for about 3 years now. His name is Ricky and he by far has the most personality of any fish I’ve ever kept. He love eating food out of my hand and actually prefers it most of the time, or if I hold a pinch of food above the water he will spit at it and try and knock it into the water (this is how they catch bugs in nature). I would highly recommend a DG to anyone who likes the way they look (:

@@mrfish.- Hi, how is the fishkeeping going? Do you still consider yourself a beginner? If you are still considering a gourami, and you have a peaceful tank, I would highly recommend the sunset honey gourami. My history with Gourami used to be dismal. All your don’ts mentioned were my do’s🤦🏾‍♂️. I could never keep them past a year. Now, I’ve been successfully keeping 3 large snakeskin Gourami for 9 months in a well planted 55 & they are very healthy if not a bit shy. Those guys have given me hope that I can finally return to permanently keeping them. After all, they’ve been my top 5 fave community fish.

My Opaline grew SO fast. I thought he was gonna be a tank buster but he stopped around 6in, maybe a lil more. He is the most relaxed fish in my entire planted 40G. Never once shown aggression towards any of my fish. I keep him with an adult albino rainbow, two swords, two mollies plus a toddler, kuhlis, snails, and mystery shrimp. My albino rainbow has the tendency to chase my female molly (no one else, idk why, maybe because she’s always pregnant), but my Opaline actually acts as a shield between the two. I’ve seen him come in between them and then smack the rainbow with his antennae to let him know to chill out. He got stuck in a bridge ornament once and sustained some damage to his dorsal, and one of his fins got torn. I put a little aquarium salt in the tank, and about 2 weeks later, he was fully healed and back to himself. You can also HEAR when these Gouramis eat. It sounds like smacking water. Love this fish. Plan on doing a full tank someday.

I've had success with multiple Sparkling, Pearl and Dwarf gouramis. Gold/Blue/Opaline... not as bad as two male bettas... but I always end up with one - and that's in a standard 55. I've heard Moonlights are very mild mannered. A bunch of smallish (less than 2") South American tetras make a great display with a single Pearl or Moonlight in a 20-40g tank. Sparkling Gouramis are also known as the Dwarf Croaking Gourami... yep - they croak when kept in a group. Fascinating fish! Thanks for the video on these not-talked-about-enough fish! I find Gouramis are the easiest fish to hand feed; in fact, they will usually peck at my arm if I am cleaning the tank, and are the last fish to run away and hide.

I have a powdered blue and a cobalt blue dwarf gourami in a 55 gallon with some schooling fish. I have some neon tetras in the tank with them. It’s a beautiful set up. I always wondered why they liked to be at the top of the tank so it is definitely a relief learning about them pulling in air. I was always worried that they maybe were stressed or hiding out. I’ve had this set up for about a year now and I haven’t had any issues.

Then one guy at the pet store told me they need a friend to be happier, so I bought another one (red and blue colors) . They were getting along pretty well in the first week, then my nightmare started. Now I’m purchasing another tank just for the red one, he is bullying everyone in my 29 gallon tank. Totally opposite of my blue gourami that is totally peaceful and has lots of personality and is also well behaved. Thank you again for this video. I guess I got lucky as they all stick together for the most part with not alot of aggression towards each other. My tank is a 60 gallon and I have a lot of tall very thick plants for hiding spots . I wanted a blue gourami this time . I think they are called three spot or opaline . I want a couple honey gouramis too. I also though the about just adding a male pearl this time . If I have all females than maybe one male wouldn't feel threatened , .

And the gourami just does his own thing. Lots of floating plants like hornwort and duckweed. I wouldn’t add another gourami or betta, but I might at another three female mollies. It’s fun to watch them swim in a straight line across the front of the tank with the betta following along behind. Might add a single pleco as well.

the blue/gold/opaline gouramis can be tricky to keep together. Males will almost always fight and they tend to be relentless. Females will fight, but they don't normally take it quite as far. Keeping them in a heavily planted tank with lots of refuge and breaks in sight will be a huge help. That will keep the fighting down and give the weaker fish a place to retreat. Also works well for Betta sororities.

I loved my baby dwarf gourami, but he wasn't with me for more than a few months. During that time, he was an inquisitive, adorable fish. I moved him to a 5 gallon, at some juncture, with a female white-skirt tetra. They appeared to get along -- there was no overt aggression -- but he began to "fail" (hiding all the time) following the move. Where he thrived was in a 1-gallon Edgelit, likely because he was an "only," there, and he responded to the feedings. PTA (Prime Time) said something in the video about water currents, and I wonder if the increased current in the 5-gallon affected him (where there was zero current in the 1-gallon). Anyway, I believe in fish reincarnation, so I will look forward to having him with me again.

So I had two young gouramis one got way bigger than the other and became the king of the tank, he would chase everything! So I isolated him to a fish bowl for a few days gathered some research! I ended up buying an additional one so a total of 3 now! I was gonna trade the more aggressive gourami in for a female but I decided to give him one more chance in the community tank now with 2 other opaline gourami and they did their dance in the water and now are pretty chill for the most part! They may chase each other around, but there is not a clear leader in the tank as of yet between the 3. I have a huge 80 gallon wide planted tank with plenty other tetras mollies and hiding places. So I’m gonna be getting 4 full grown angel fish to add….wish me well gonna see how this gonna go!

got my blue three spot gourami with a school of golden barbs and corydoras. I watched the gouramis at the store and picked one with a feisty enough personality that I knew it would be able to defend itself while also not becoming the tank bully. I'd advise you just take a moment to consider individual personalities, they are the reason people's experiences with gouramis are so diverse. But yea my wee gourami has been fine, she established herself at the top of the hierarchy so noone else bothers her and she doesn't chase or harass the other fish except on rare occasions when she feels particularly attached to a piece of food. She's been a family pet too, very personable and interested in humans.

You are absolutely correct. The blue gourami,the opaline gourami, three spot gourami and their all other colour variants(males). They are very agressive to other gouramis expecially males. In my experience the moonlight gourami is the peaceful among gouramis. Gouramis are one of my favourite aquarium fishes of all time.

I have two dwarf gourami (1 flame 1 blue neon) in a 30gal they share with a small school of white skirt tetras, a bristlenose pleco, and a few mystery snails. They all seem to get along very well. I suspect both Gouramis are female is why they don't bully each other or the other fish. They tend to hang out with the tetras and take turns swimming over the long air stone in the back of the tank, riding the current up to the top. Then they all turn around and go the other way like a line for a ride at an amusement park! It's hilarious to watch and they appear to have a lot of fun doing it. Both Gouramis tend to eat slower than the tetras, so I tend to feed them both from my fingers to make sure the tetras don't outcompete them for food. Lovely fish and perfect for the little community of fish they share the tank with.

I have a huge moonlight gourami, a blue two spot, and three pearl gourami. Initially I had one pearl, and it was resting at the bottom of the tank. I got two more, and now they're happy as ever, following eachother around like a little family. I don't see any agression at all between any of the gourami, but the blue is hands down the alpha, I think they're very confident fish
@kinglyzard
@kinglyzard 5 жыл бұрын
You may have only one or no male Pearl Gourami. Males, in my experience, fight constantly. Usually, the alpha will bully any other male to death. Mixing conspecifics is risky too. I mixed a Pearl, a Moonlite and a Blue, and got complete bedlam

Mine have been doing totally fine for the last few months, so its probably just a bad experiance for you, and I have males, all three pearls are males and get along fine. I've had Frank the powder blue dwarf gourami for a few weeks now. He's definitely tank boss, in a 20L with platys and ember tetras. Papa platy continually tries to mate with him and he gets angry and goes after Papa and Baby Girl (one of the now adult females - can easily identify as she's nearly solid black). But she keeps hanging around him and I think it's now a game for her! Regular platys can definitely hold their own with a dwarf gourami.

I have a Gourami tank. Pearls, Lavenders, Blues and Opaline. And a few black skirt tetras. I have not had any issues with agression. I think it is because I had my Pearls first, let them get big, then introduced the Lavenders as babies, then once they were big, introduced the Blues as babies then the Opalines as babies. The tetras were introduced after the Pearls and before the the Lavenders. I have them in a 125 with a good canister filter that doesn't create a lot of current and a bubble mist bar. If any of them ever become an issue I have other tanks I can move them too. 2 - 75gallons and a 55 gallon that all have room.

Gouramis are absolutely nuts. They say the Pearls are extremely peaceful but in my experience they’re just as crazy as opalines. They’re extremely territorial and aggressive towards smaller fish. I could not keep mine in a community tank they were just so mean and nasty. I ended up putting them with my South American cichlids. They do just fine. I like gouramis but they are a headache if placed in the wrong setting. I strongly recommend placing them in a semi-aggressive tank. But always monitor them closely. They have tons of personality and they’re incredibly hardy fish. They’ll make a great addition as long as you’re careful.

I just purchased 2 more gauramis after my tank went downhill, and all my fish died except for 1 blue dwarf gaurami. I recently purchased a gold and black, and a 3 spot gaurami. When I introduced them into my 45gl, the dwarf gaurami was the one chasing the 2 new ones around for a hour or two. But since then, they seem to not be fighting or chasing one another. And I also have a 1 1/2 inch Pleco. I also have 2 air stones and a small filter with power head combined with my hang over the side filter. After watching these videos, I'm thinking of taking the small filter with power head out, so there is not so much current in water.

So, I i did exactly what youre not supposed to do. I put an Opaline with a Dwarf. The Opaline was a female and the Dwarf a male. I don't know if that is what saved me or I just got lucky but they love each other. The Opaline female is always putting her feelers on the Dwarf and they swim together. Worse yet; they're in a 29 gallon, lol. 🤦 I recently bought two female Dwarfs and they're in quarantine for the next 4-6 weeks. I am pretty-sure this will upset the apple cart. I decided I am going to buy 55 gallon and move the Opaline to that tank while the Dwarfs are in quarantine. Im going to miss watching 👀 the Opaline hug the Dwarf with those outstretched feelers. 🥰

Sadly I just lost my powder blue dwarf gourami today. I only had him maybe one month. I had him in a 10 gallon with two buenos aires tetras, one corydora (one inch), one VERY benign female betta (who is more like a puppy than a fish), one otocinlclus and two rescued neon tetras. I realize now that this was two small regardless of what store had posted. He seemed ( i supposed it was a he) to be very happy for 3 weeks, him and the female betta always hanging together, eating together because they were way more layed back than the faster moving tetras and cory. I also had three lava rocks with medium sized (varied anubias attached) for hiding and relaxing as well as a very nice arched piece of driftwood which also provided great cover/shading, etc. My lighting wasn't super bright as I have heard they don't do not like super bright tanks and also plenty of access to gulp fresh air. I had a calm water surface, so no overly strong flow.... and just within last 3 days I noticed a changed in behavior..not as ferociously ready and excited to eat..and yesterday he was down at bottom of tank under the arch of the drift wood, finally last night he was resing in an odd position but upon arousing him and monitoring he seemed normal. One thing I will note that was very unfortunate that happened within the first two days was pectoral fins (the feelers) were nipped off, not completely but almost half the length was gone. ( I assume that had to be the slow cause of death, but I thought they would heal with appropriate water changes and treatment for secondary infections with Erythromyacin(not sure i spelled correctly)....anyways I am devastated. He/she was so miled mannered and precious, no agression that I ever witnessed. So, I am a bit stumped with the sudden death (and he was still eating until yesterday) I heard too much protein based foods can be a problem, is this true?

I’ve kept various species of gourami in the past.... Dwarf, Honey, Pearl, Moonlight, and Banded. Of those species, I would say the banded gourami was the most aggressive and didn’t stay in that tank very long, but was a beautiful fish. The dwarf gourami had some aggressive moments too, especially in a small tank. They were both kept as singles in a community with other gourami present in a 125 gallon tank. I had a small group of pearl gourami at one time and they were quite peaceful for the most part, even with other gourami present. At another point, they co-habitated with moonlight gourami, and the moonlights were fairly mellow also. All of them at one point or another were kept in the 125 gallon tank, so having that space really helped keep any bickering down.
