Gospel and blues were very different. They do have a similar sound. But you can hear in many blues that the parents sis not want them to play blues keep playing gospel. BB King is one off the top of my head.

The Reverend Blind Willie Johnson (1897-1945) is the author of this wonderful song, not Son House, not Depeche Mode(please....), not Robt. Johnson, not Blind Willie McTell, not Warren Haynes.

It's actually just a gospel song that's been passed down generation to generation, and has been adopted by the blues by way of Blind Willie Johnson.

Nobody was worthy to open the book sealed with The 7 Seals. So John began to weep. Then God consoles John The Revelator that Jesus is worthy to open them. Scrolls were sealed with wax and stamped for the person important enough to read the message inside. (Julian Assange was not alive yet!) 1. Deception (rides white horse) 2. War (rides black horse) 3. Famine (rides red horse) 4. Death (rides gray horse) 5. Persecution 6. Cosmic signs 7. Silence

Legend has it, that once upon a time, long ago in the town of Charming, there lived the most dangerous and most handsome of outlaws. Word is that his intelligence surpassed the most brutal of his enemies. He was said to have bedded many women, but only one in particular was most special to him and had his heart. He was a fierce defender of his brothers and loved his children most of all. They said he had a heart of gold and lost it. Others say he found it. His name was Jackson Teller

I can't see what difference it makes... Who 'wrote' it... What it says, is what matters, and that it still matters enough for people to argue about! Warren Haynes is fine with me! I don't do religion but spiritual is universal... In my opinion. Just another generation... I'm just glad that we can still hear songs that originated... Where? That it is still around is enough for me and I can't think of a better person to sing it! Not that anything I think matters... Think I'll listen to The Mystic. Gov't Mule gives me way more goosebumps than Van Morrison! It sounds like a song that has been around as long as this one? I mean no disrespect to Van Morrison! I am 56 and heard the song, and liked it... But! These guys... Actually, I mean their guitars... Made me 'think' I "FELT" what it was about. Didn't think once of who wrote it, or even words... It is what you feel from it.

@steveg118511 жыл бұрын
No, It's a Blind Willie Johnson cover - and specifically, Son House who wrote the version that all the modern covers usually cover. It is a traditional gospel blues call and response song. It has been called "one of the most powerful songs in all of pre-war acoustic music ... [which] has been hugely influential to blues performers".
