The TSX underperforms S&P 500 consistently every year. Why should we (Canadians) or anyone else for that matter invest here?

if your a pension that just invests in tsx/sp500/dow your always gonna lose out and may aswell just follow nasdaq. but individual stocks and especially dividend stocks can be better in canada depending on what u wanna invest in. for example, canada has better mining stocks and finance and communications then the usa does.

Pensions are and should be responsible first and foremost for attaining the highest risk adjusted return possible for pensioners. The meddling in asset allocation of pensions by government as a solution to problems that are caused by other government policies should be seen for what it is; a propping up of current bond and stock holders at the cost of workers that contribute to these pensions. The Canadian government needs to show more respect for our current generation of workers.

No, they shouldn't. Pensions should invest where they will get the highest return for the lowest risk. That's their fiduciary duty.

I'm confused... Invest in what in Canada? There is absolutely no innovation in this country. Canada has not at all been business friendly for almost a decade. The only dominant assets here are the big banks. Our economy is dead in the water, we have a major housing crisis, our taxes are far too high and our population is quite broke. The ROI in US and international markets is much higher even on bad days. IF Canadian leadership at all levels pivot now and implement business & innovation friendly policies such as the US, perhaps this conversation about investing more in TSX can be rehashed a 100 years from now... because thats how long its likely going to take to turn ourselves around from the current situation.

Investors have just turned back the clock on the Fed’s tightening campaign and cast aside the Fed fears that ruled them for 15 months, It just gets very daunting to me when I’m sitting there looking at charts and trying to determine if i’m right or wrong! I’ve been trying to grow my portfolio of $300K for sometime now, I would greatly appreciate any suggestions

First of all, You could lose it all and you could win it all. It goes both ways. Secondly, what works for A may not necessarily work for B and you should not be a bandwagon investor. A good number of folks are raking in huge 6 figure gains in this downtrend, but such strategies are mostly successfully executed by folks with in depth market knowledge.

It’s unfortunate most people don’t have such information, I don’t really blame people who panic cos lack of information can be a big hurdle. I’ve been making more than $25k passively by just investing through an advisor, and I don’t have to do much work. It doesn’t matter if the economy is crashing, great CFA will always make good returns.
