Restoring them to health and returning them to the wild is our primary goal. _Informing, Educating and Inspiring_ The SWF provides over 100 educational programs reaching over 30,000 people annually. We believe providing educational outreach programs to schools, scout groups and community events, with focus on children and families, will make the greatest impact in preserving our wildlife, the environment, our public lands and our resources for future generations to enjoy. _Martin Tyner_ Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends. At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors. “One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.” Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator. He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years. “Grandpa believed in a very simple philosophy; that a person should get up every morning and do good. Doing good means that you do well for others and doing well means that you do good for yourself. There is nothing wrong with doing well, but Grandpa always believed in doing good.” Martin's book, Healer of Angels, reflects back on his life: from a young boy terrified of birds to becoming the first man in North America licensed to train a wild golden eagle in the ancient art of falconry. Through a heartwarming collection of true stories he describes his challenging transformation from a shy dyslexic teenager, to the founder and CEO of the Southwest Wildlife Foundation.

Wow. Please Mr. Tyner don't think you you failed Kate. I watched the whole thing through. You did so much for Kate and helped her to experience flying. At one point you said she caught her own pidgin. And she got outside and flew under the sky. You were her hero. Thank you for what you did for Kate.

Yes, I watched the entire film too and indeed this was a success story. You gave to Kate almost a whole year of very enjoyable life after an entire life of neglect. You did it so right, that she enjoyed and accepted it and was ready to move on. She had so many wonderful experiences she otherwise would have never known. It took courage and strength on her part and selfless love on your part. Bless you all.

This is the story of life, and life is never easy and never always successful. It's about the journey, and she got the best chance she could have ever had. I understand how hard that must be for you and Susan, as a hospice nurse, it takes a while to process the defeats, but I am so grateful to see life from this prospective, I can't express how appreciative I am, and how much I can relate. You all are amazing! Thanks DG you did an amazing job putting that together!

I was really excited to watch you train Kate. You worked really hard and were completely dedicated to letting her fly free. By working with her, you were able to let her fly and know that freedom. Unfortunately, her health was not up to par. Both of you deserve Angel wings for taking care of this bird with all of her bad habits especially the screeching. I would never have made it through. I was hopeful since she didn’t screech while working with you that the noise abated. I applaud you for everything you tried to help Kate. Always remember without you she never would have flown in her whole life. I appreciate what you stand for and your determination to succeed.

Honestly You Did Help Kate - had it not been for you - she wouldn't have known the feeling of freedom from 'her perspective - She flew freely - She caught her own food - You gave ' Her a chance to feel like she's a real 'Bird - not just sitting in a cage waiting for someone to give her the attention she so desperately needed - You gave Kate a life although short - she knew what it was like to be Free Enough to Fly at her own will!! That wouldn't have happened without You

You gave her the experience to fly wich she loved and once her own pigeon knocked and had for breakfast. I think you gave her the highest form of love an animal understands from an human. If it was not her physical condition she probably would be able to survive in the wild, but her respitory issue made that impossible. Also this incredible edited video, kudos to gg the webgeek, shows an perfect example for new falconers what it means to be really dedicated to your bird. Your love and passion along with your respect and patience shows what it is to become a natural falconer. Kate is now free and soaring on the highest level of love🌬️💖🌈✨

I used to be able to volunteer at a wildlife rescue that specialized in raptors and they cared for non releasable resident birds as well. I've seen that pain in the eyes when a bird that someone had worked with for a long time didn't make it. Though I could only feel it second hand because I didn't work directly with the birds, it impressed upon me the deep connection that can come to be from the interaction between bird and handler. But Martin, I will vehemently disagree with you on one thing you said durig the epilog. You Did Not Fail! Even if it was for just the briefest of moments, when Kate caught that pigeon she became a falcon. And were it not for you, that is a moment she probably would never have had. You have my deepest respect and admiration for doing what you do. Thank you.

I don't do what you do. But I do have great empathy. As I'm typing this I have tears rolling down my face for how difficult it is to be so invested in an animal and you trying to do everything that you humanly possibly can. The emotions, the owning of that bird, animal and how emotionally invested you are in that animal and it's sadly passes away. I have great respect for all that you do and all that your wife does. You are truly very priceless people. You invest so much time and emotions and care into these animals. Thank you so very much for all that you do. ❤

I’m so sorry for the loss of Kate. I live with two rescued starlings, I found Attila on the ground with two siblings. The two siblings didn’t grow and passed away after about a week. I cried a bunch and I can’t imagine what it feels like to lose Kate after so much time with her. It’s a big loss. I love your birds just from watching them on video. At least she knew love for awhile. It might not feel the same to them as to us but I’d be willing to bet she felt something.

You offered her every opportunity to become a falcon but she just could not do it. I am touched by the way that you explained to us her bewilderment and rage at being unable to understand why she could not fly. She tried her best, adapting her flight to her weakness by keeping low and resting often. But even with your patience and love, she was too ill. But you enabled her to rouse, pluck, skim along, comment loudly on the things which were important to her. She had a life. What a great achievement.

Im glad she was able to at least experience flight…she was so beautiful and suffered so much before she came to you. I can see why you don’t enjoy kiting but it’s a brilliant way to help a bird develop better muscle tone. That really brought a smile to my face when she flew to the kite. I’m so sad that she deteriorated as a result of her physical and emotional neglect and abuse, which is all I can call the way she was raised. I’m sad for you that you lost her. I’ve been through that with a couple of rescue dogs whose abuse caused them serious health problems. It’s always hard to lose a beloved animal but those were devastating. I’m very appreciative you made the video. There is a limit to what is humanly possible, which you certainly did, and I hope people gain a better understanding of that from Kate’s story.

Thank you for your wonderful work and for your heart (everyone involved in your program)! Aspergillosis is very tough. We have a "pass-around" cat; we were her fourth home in less than a year because of her behaviour. All she needed was time, plus she figured out how to use the dog door on her own. Once she could come and go as she saw fit she changed into a loving lap-sitting cat. We also have a "pass-around" dog that was found on the streets of San Antonio. Best dog ever!

In life people have a hard time separating heart felt sentiment with science. Martin showed us his amazing ability to examine in each step of the process, while often mentioning how Kate was in the worst shape he had ever seen. Yet his love for the bird is what kept this rehab going for as long as possible. This would have to be the most accurate portrayal of the extreme difficulty of being a falconer. For that, this should be mandatory viewing for all ascribing falconers, as well as anyone wanting a career in wildlife rehabilitation. My utmost respect to Martin.

Its a sad thing losing such a beautiful bird but her quality of life was surely raised in her time with you. You gave her back something that should have been a natural thing. Her health issues were way beyond your control so no need to linger on any shoulda coulda wouldas on her behalf. Remember her in flight and the time you had with her. The good note in all this is your time is more free to help other birds or critters in need here in our lives. Keep doing what you do as long as you can as it is ALWAYS a great and wonderful thing you give to not only the critters but the world sir.

I can't quite remember when exactly I did start watching the channel but I certainly do remember all of the story since 2019. I have lost some of their videos and this is a nice chance to see what I have missed. How time flies! Like the birds...

The whole video was great, but that bit at the end where you described the difference in the way falcons hunt versus hawks/eagles. Great teaching. Sorry about the ending, but that work with her was wonderful. We can't save everything we want, we can only try.

That would have ripped me up as well. That took a lot of resources. Time, mostly. My hope is that other rehabilitators will also learn from this. It's good that you shared it. Still, that hurt.

Speaking as someone who would try to run at recess despite my heart condition rendering me exhausted in less than a minute, you probably gave her the best shot you could. You didn't have saved her life from a hidden illness poorly treated from before your care, but you did allow her to be a falcon for as long as her health could allow. Also I doubt that birds can live vicariously through Manga, so being to kill at least 1 pigeon herself is priceless.

What a wonderful, kind, patient and smart man you are. Kate came to trust, respect and love you. Do you have people you train so they can carry on and provide what you do for these marvelous animals? I follow peregrines here in Rockford,IL(Louise and Brian ) who have been successful parents for 2 yrs now.

Day 192, that's amazing!! What a good girl!!! You did that with her; that might be called falconry, but I call that love, patience, and appreciation for life and flight of a falcon. I'm sorry. Losing a family member SUCKS!😢 But you did what families should do..... Keep trying!!!!! Fighting the good Fight till the end. Never give up, never stop trying. She was a good girl😇🥺🥲 RIP

You are not stupid for getting emotionally attached to the birds. A lot of people get very emotionally attached to the birds. We are special people and different people that care very very much for birds.
