@@12123188 that is not traction control. Traction control was banned in 2008 and all teams were running the McLaren ECU at that time. Meaning the FIA would see any modifications to the car. Right tyre choice on a drying track. Compare that to Ayrton Senna in Donington 1993 who started with the same tyres as everybody else. Overtook 4 cars in a few corners in the opening lap of the race. Among those Schumacher, Hill and Alain Prost (the latter two in the dominant Williams-Renault). Schumacher won from 16'th on the grid in Spa in 1995.

You're right. Fernando had been ahead of the Bourdais/Kubica/Vettel/Heidfeld-train, Nick stopped after 42 laps for full wets, 1 lap later Fernando stopped for intermeds and could reel in 3 out of 4. Thus, his pit stop had brought him an opportunity to prove his driving skills, but no net advantage. Heidfeld ended up 2nd, only 9 seconds behind Massa. With Nick's pitstop strategy, Fernando would have had a chance to catch Felipe in his last lap. but there is no 'if' or 'would' in racing...

@vickmatell Nick was 8th when he came into the pits with 2 laps to go, he didn't lose a place during his stop. then Kimi shredded his Ferrari (Nick was 7th), when Nick entered his last lap, he became 6th (due to Fernando's stop), and during his last lap in the Malmedy-Pouhon-Section he passed Vettel (5th), Kubica(4th) and Bourdais(3rd). After the race, Hamilton got penalized and Nick was promoted to 2nd. I think his last lap at Spa 2008 can be compared to Senna's first lap at Donington 1993.

This move cost Alonso track position to Heidfeld and nearly cost him 2 more positions to Vettel and Kubica as well.So why the hell are people applauding it? It was a gamble that did not pay off. Firstly, Alonso was 4th before Kimi crashed out so was up to 3rd when he pit. By pitting he lost places to Heidfeld, Bourdais, Vettel, Kubica, Kovalainen and he only just managed to beat Vettel and Kubica over the line.If Alonso didn't pit he would have finished 2nd behind Massa. (After Hamiltons 25s penalty dropped Hamilton to 3rd). instead Alonso finished 4th

How would Renault have had any idea that Raikonnen would spin off, or Hamilton would be penalised? It was a gamble that he executed beautifully, only unforeseeable circumstances mean not taking the pitstop could have lead to a better outcome. And isn't racing and passing generally seen as a good thing?
@PauRuizAubanell5 жыл бұрын
Heidfeld take part of the gamble, because he was P7 and 53 seconds ahead the P1 when it remained 7 laps to go. Alonso was P4, with Bourdais behind him 5 seconds ahead. Would be so crazy from Renault and Alonso, to change tyres 2 laps before, when Raikkonen still in the lead and when it was not clear about the rain. Watching races 10 years after, and from the sofa, is easier to decide strategies.
@mrdraw20874 жыл бұрын
Heidfeld had the best strategy. Not sure if Alonso would have done better without his stop. He may have been overtaken by Heidfeld as well or he might have crashed. Given how slw Hamilton and Massa were in the final lap it made perfect sense to switch to intermediates.
@markhenley30973 жыл бұрын
Renault didn't want to risk P4 for nothing. Heidfeld pitted early because he was in P7 and had little to lose. Renault eventually realised that pitting for tyres could be a useful gamble, but waited later to reduce risk.

both Fernando and Nick overtook the same number of drivers on the track (three, namely Bourdais, Vettel and Kubica). @beyblader10171 he didn't get past Heidfeld. Nick stopped after 42 laps for intermeds, Fernando after 43 out of 44. On lap 42, Fernando was ahead of Nick, but he finished behind him. the white BMW Fernando overtook was Kubica, not Heidfeld.

There is no "F3" series - there are some national series, like Japanese F3 and British F3, and there is the European championship, F3 Euroseries. Lewis Hamilton did not race in any F3 series in 2003 - but he won Formula Renault 2.0 UK. But anyways, it doesn't really matter, you don't have to convince anyone that he won a lot in junior series - but personally, I think he had much, much better support than most drivers, being with McLaren from the start of his formula racing career.
