Alonso was great at burning bridges, playing games with his own team, and got kicked out from almost every team he drove for. .. Jenson Button also had some interesting things to say about this guy; Fernando faked retirements(!) while they were teammates at McLaren. He(Alonso) said that there's a problem with the car when he was behind Button. Team was saying back that keep driving/fighting Fernando, but he then just gave up. No other world champion ever disgraced himself like Alonso did. .. Other than that, he's a talented driver.

I don't think Kimi was as great as Fernando tbh. Between 2005 and 2007 they were close but Kimi started falling off after that, especially after his 2 year break. Honestly I disagree, I’ve never found that Alonso’s speed is his greatest strength, I’d you look at Quali he is definitely strong (especially considering his cars are more often than not slow), but his real magic happens on a Sunday. He is a racing genius, he will sacrifice corners early in order to be put in a better position to overtake 4 corners further ahead. This pairs perfectly with his usually flawless racecraft, he is rarely in scrapes that are his fault or makes mistakes, in my mind the only ones I can think of are him hitting the wall at t4 in Canada in 2005 which meant he retired, him hitting Ocon on the straight in Brasil and going off the track when attempting to overtake Petrov in Abu Dhabi 2010. Given this, he is an almost perfect driver in the race, but usually he has to fight his car which is slower/unreliable and his lower qualification (which is again due to the car). For sure he is not perfect, and his attitude can be harmful to his team, but his talent, intelligence and experience make him an invaluable quantity for any team on the grid, in my mind he can still win a title if given the car beneath him, and I hope with the new wind tunnel and team base that Aston can do that for him. Vamos legend, Vamos.

I covered Alonso's rise a few months ago. Found a few interesting things: - Jean Todt had signed Alonso to be a Ferrari Junior, but Briatore came along and snatched him up - It was the reason why Fernando would never drive for Ferrari as long as Todt was there - Alonso tested for Jaguar in 2002 among other teams, and even had a comparison with Andre Lotterer, a future Le Mans winner.

I think part of the legend of Fernando and what makes him even more special is the fact that he only won two championships. He has earned his reputation not by winning "easy" championships with cars significant faster, but by having incredible consistent races making the most out of slower, unreliable, or mid pack cars, even if it was "just" finishing P7 or P8. And furthermore, the fact that he is going to turn 42 and he is still really fast. I don't know other driver that could do that in my lifetime watching Formula 1.

Alonso is that athlete whose brilliance isn't reflected in statistics (2 WDCs just does not tell the story), but it doesn't matter because everyone who knows anything about the sport knows that, and has him on the same tier as a Hamilton, Schumacher, or Senna. Casuals will look at titles won etc., but invested fans know he didn't have the cars. It's a bit like George Best for Manchester United. Had a few wins, but never even appeared at a World Cup because he was Northern Irish. But everyone knows he was elite.

Fernando Alonso > Michael Schumacher > Lewis Hamilton. As for Senna... well while I objectively know he wasn't as great as Fernando or Michael, I also wonder how he would have looked at the end of his career if fate had given him enough time. Since I can only base on what I saw, Fernando easily comes out on top followed by either Michael or Ayrton. Lewis is a great driver but, much like Sebastian and Max's performances, most of the merit goes to the flawless machinery they had when they won those titles. Even a mediocre driver like Charles Sbinnerc could manage that so I can't possibly consider Lewis equal to Michael, that would be pure madness!

Everytime red bull fk up in pitstops or strategy, max goes all out on them on the radio blaming them. Whereas fernando never blamed his teams, even at mclaren honda his frustrations were against the garbage honda engine. Max's just seeing the good days right now since the past 2 years, when now he's a proven champion. Now when the bad days come more often, it'll be interesting to see how close max stays to red bull. Besides, the occasional outburst from Max is nothing compared to lulu's "you guys f*cked me" in Zandvoort or Leclerc's WTF in Monaco. Idk if Max or Lewis will perform well in a different team but Alonso is just build different. He doesn't seem to have weakness. Front end, back end, over streer, under streer. He adapts of course he have preference.

One perfect word for Alonso came to my mind while watching 2005, Relentless. One phrase to describe his approach, "lead, follow, or get out of the way". Give him the cars his rivals enjoyed while giving his rivals the best cars Alonso ever had and he would be winning F1 titles in his 70's.

Fernando deserved more titles, but his incredible drives and hilarious shenanigans, as well as his say-it-like-it-is mentality have made me fall in love with him. As someone who's started following the sport in the last 2-3 years , Fernando is arguably the greatest modern day motorport driver since 2000. What he was able to do in 2012 with an underperforming Ferrari is the stuff of legend. Not to mention is his performance in Hungary 2015, Baku 2018 and his drive in Hungary 2021 holding up Lewis, who was in the most dominant F1 package of the V6 Hybrid Era. The man is levels above the rest and I'm glad he's getting his due by newer fans like me too!

To me, Fernando is the greatest driver to ever live. He's raced in so many different cars and different styles, and done well in all of them. He's had the longest ever career in Formula 1, a feat that will likely never be surpassed. He single-handedly brought the Spanish speaking world back into the world of motor racing. He hasn't had a bad year, he never puts a foot wrong, and he's even ensuring the future of motorsports with his karting academy. Every world champion he's raced with or against has enormous respect for him. Lewis Hamilton named him as the toughest teammate he ever had. Jenson thought he was the most complete driver. Max Verstappen regretted that he couldn't race against Alonso in a competitive machine. Niki Lauda commended Alonso for immediately building the entire Ferrari team around himself, even better than what Schumacher could do.
