Awesome vid. I want to explore that pass and a few hopefully easier paths someday. But when it comes to Google or Apple maps, yeah learned long time ago if it directs you to a questionable route, I'll stop and bring up the map and look for alternate ones. As this could have been far worse for them. They were lucky you were there.

I will say, at least they were going the easier direction. A box truck tried to go up it the other way a few years ago and blocked the pass for several days.

It's a 360 camera on the end of a selfie stick that extends out from the bumper. You might be able to see the shadow of the stick in some shots. Thanks for your comment!

I saw somebody do Ophir one time in a Nissan Sentra, and a couple of weeks ago I saw someone on Engineer Pass (a few miles east of Ophir and more difficult) in a Mazda CX5. I'm always surprised there aren't more disasters.

I have been watching these shelf road videos lately and have to wonder how well a trail motorcycle would do on such rough terrain. I never see any on these videos.

I saw trail motorcycles on every mountain pass I drove, there are definitely lots of riders out there. The main difficulty seemed to be stalling out and starting on steep inclines with a loose surface.

Bikes do all of these roads. Ophir is on the Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route. I've ridden it both directions.

We just got back from CO and while on the trails saw some vehicles that were questionable. Ophir pass, Subaru Crosstrek. Coming down Engineer Pass, a Subaru Forester, then we saw an older couple in a new Lincoln Navigator... The Subaru's I understand, the Navigator left us wondering... Also what are using equipment wise to get that view/s with your camera. Very cool perspectives.

The Navigator sounds like it would create a problem when passing other vehicles, they're so huge. The unique view is from an Insta360 ONE X, you don't see the pole it is mounted on.

At least they had nice weather. We did the pass in August 2010...heavy rain. There was a road grader at the top.....he'd just repaired the road from the Telluride end. Got down into the woods, and a bulldozer was repairing the road at one of the stream crossings. He waved us on, made it, but the Jeep was bottomed out all the way thru the slop. Got to Ouray, and there'd been a mud slide across 550. The D&S RR had a washout that same day. Great day to do Ophir! Glad we didn't do our original plan out of Animas Forks!!!

There was a landslide on Black Bear a few days after I was there, it's surprising how much those trails can change from day to day. Sounds like you got the maximum experience.

WE JUST RESCUED A RIDER ON OPHIR PASS. We posted that video on our channel. Same thing happened, where he had the google maps send him over the pass. He was on a motorcycle. It’s crazy story. 15 crashes. Watch “Man Down On Ophir Pass”.

I would value your opinion… Debating doing this pass in my Subaru Outback that has a very good set of a/t tires on it. I have quite a lot of off road experience as I had a Tacoma TRD Pro before this Outback that I took on trails much more technical than this one, so it is mostly down to the car. Do you think it is doable?

I think Ophir is doable with some care. There are mild ledges just west of the peak, and you'll have to watch the big overhang on the Subaru bumper because I can see it scraping. Other than that the pass is rough dirt and gravel. If you're going slow make sure the faster rigs go first or can get around you to avoid a pileup.

I just tried Apple Maps. From Silverton to Telluride it routes me on paved roads unless I select walking or riding a bike. Then it routes me over Ophir Pass. Maybe they just had the wrong transportation method selected.

I think the Sequoia would be fine if you have experience with mild off-roading and shelf roads. It's a larger vehicle so make sure you are comfortable maneuvering on narrow trails.

This is not a joke. Apple maps sent them to a dangerous path, in incapable machine with probably no experience traversing such terrain. They should thank god that they found you there to help them out.

I mean Ophir is like a 3 out of 10. If not for a few narrow bits it would be even lower. Unless Apple maps route someone in the winter.

I agree, It isn't technically difficult, but for your average driver it's terrifying, and small mistakes on that trail can kill you. It really depends on the experience of the driver.

I use an Insta360 One X camera that's great for trail videos. I put it on a short selfie stick on the front bumper or stick it on the windshield with suction cups. You can connect a USB power bank and it will record for hours at a time.

Wow! I expected a young couple that has never heard of a real map and only knows smartphone apps. These two were old enough to know better. The old saying "Trust, but verify does not apply to GPS." Never trust a GPS and always verify especially when you leave the mall parking lot.

Went down Ophir pass in 2002 with a 2000 Chevy Malibu rented out of Texas. Came from Quray US 550 side, thinking I could save time to Cortez. Eastside from 550 not that difficult. Got to the top, looked down the trail before the 1st turn, rocks looked smooth and I thought. "okay, it's down hill". After that turn, rocks were jutting out all through the trail, scraped the hell out of the undercarriage and punctured a tire right before the downstream creek. (Don't know how I didn't puncture transmission or oil pan) Punched through that and changed the tire. Got to the town of Ophir then to Rico and to 160. Scared me shitless & I swore 4X4 vehicle or not, would never mess with anything like these off road mountain passes again.

Yes, if you start on the east side it's deceptively easy until after the pass. I wonder how many rental cars have made it that way by accident 😄
