GPU Bios Flashing.... Simple and easy!

I paid $10 for this video card on eBay due to it having a mining bios and missing the fans. I was surprised on how easy it was to flash theses bios using simple tools on techpowerups website. The best advise I can give is to make sure that you have the correct bios to include brand and revision. If not then you risk bricking your bios but you still can recover the card as long as you have a second GPU.

I have Evga gtx 1080 ti hybrid Sc2, problem is that I get black screen when I load a game, I tried reinstalling windows, rolling back gpu driver, flashing mbo bios. Temps are normal, luckily I did a ss when was black screen and it states out of video memory trying to allocate a texture. Would flashing bios help me?

it might, usually at the point the memory could be failing or a corrupt bios and this could save it.

Thank you for this! I have the "AMD Driver not compatible" errors when installing my driver through the official AMD site. Been searching for a way to fix this and all I found is nothing. I have a question. I want to try a different vbios on my PNY 4090 by using nvflashk. Can I recover from a brick using my integrated graphics on my 14900k? I have heard cases where sometimes people can't boot into windows even with their igpu if a bricked GPU is inserted onto the motherboard.

Whenever I launch any game or msi kombuster my screen turns black, I tried many different driver version of GPU but it doesn't work, my GPU is 1650 super, it used work perfectly fine but after pairing it with new cpu (i5 11400f) it's showing this problem, i can easily update GPU drivers, idk what to do, pls help. Try DDU and see if uninstalling it that way helps. Another thing to check is to see if the psu is beefy enough since the new cpu would require more power. Another thing to consider is maybe a bios update as some boards need the bios updated to support newer model cards.

you can make a bootable usb windows. I have not done it but I heard it been done. Its pretty much a water downed version but allows you to do stuff like editing the bios. Never done it but have had people tell me about it. probably need to search the web for the file.

I have a rtx 3060 asus dual fan every time I play games like rust and no mans sky nothing happens but the second I play something like minecraft or roblox the screen turns black and a little white line pops up on the top left corner. Would flashing the BIOS help?

those games are cpu intensive. check the temps and try updating the chipset drivers and mobo bios. another test to ensure the graphics card is not the culprit is running heaven benchmark. if it runs for a while with good temps then I would lean towards the cpu.

Hi.. i got a radeon rx 560 but when i hit the look up button in gpu z a page to techpower up opens and it shows bio star rx 560 dual cooling. Are they the same? Should i get the bios of bio star and flash it on my radeon rx 560?

you can try it, if it's not compatible the program won't flash it. typically you can use other manufactures bios of the same card and specs.

check the thermal pads. most people when the change the paste tend to tear the pads or sometimes the fall out without us even noticing it.

Yea if gpuz is showed no info then it could be a card issue. Typically they are far gone but sometimes a gpu flash fixes it

Yeah definitely make a back up of the stock bios. I have had my 5700 flashed to a 5700 XT for a couple years now and I am now trying to revert back and no bioses online are working.

Did you check the temps first, I have found that to be more common when the gpu is underload it gets to hot, might be bad thermal paste, if not, usually when the ati software won't allow it , it is because the bios don't match, make sure you have the exact same model bios for the card you are getting, it can be newer but has to be the same model.

hey so my gpu can't run with a driver installed and would usually crash on boot and lose singal past the the windows logo sometimes I am able to sign in but would very soon lose display again. I tried doing windows ctrl shift B during the crash I can hear the beep noise but ultimately it does not solve the problem, I've tried booting into safe mode and reinstall the driver with DDU and do a clean reinstall of windows but to no avail, is it worth Flashing the gpu im not very sure in what im doing but I saw another person online who had a similar problem flash his card

at this point seems like you have tried everything I would of done, only other thing could be checking the card as the thermal paste or pads could be bad cause a bad overheating issue. When the card loads and windows UI puts a load on it could overheat once the drivers initate. At this point seems like you have nothing to loose flashing the bios.

hey i decided to do some more testing before i possibly brick my card and with enough attempts or a stroke of luck I am able to go use my PC normally for about an hour before losing display (with driver installed) I installed GPU Z and turned on the text logs and noticed that the clock speeds disappeared when it crashes do you have any idea on what the problem could be

Hi i have rx580 I bought it used and guy who sold it to me said he barely used it , I usually experience driver crashing on boot or my pc freezing so I have to hard reboot I installed gpuz and when I go to look up my bios It is actually a rx 480 and it actually is it . the flashing should be straight forward, key is to make sure you have the correct bios and match the serial, id number etc. I f you brick it, it is possibly to still fix it, you may have to use either the igpu if your cpu has it or a second gpu to get into windows and flash the card. I have fixed bricked cards by flashing them using a second gpu to boot into windows.

All is good thanks!! when your seeing that on gpuz it is is pretty much a lost cause. try the bios flash and maybe a good cleaning with isoproply all over the card and last resort would be a makeshift reflow of the card with a heat gun or oven.

I bought a new pc recently and a guy built it and i was not there. After getting it i had to buy a monitor so i waited for a couple of months ( the guy who built the pc told me that everything looked fine). So after getting my monitor i tried gta and everything looked jagged. I tried reinstalled the dfivers but mo luck. I changed the nvidia control panel settings but still a lot of shimmering and jagged lines. I was wondering if the guy who built changed the gpu bios or not so is it possible to solve the problem by flashing the bios? ( i have a msi gaming z trio lhr 3080, ryzen 5 5600x, 32 gb ram, asus b550-f gaming motherboard and a 850 watt gold psu)

doubtful that the bios was changed, I would check the refresh rate of the monitor and resolution first and make sure it matches the monitor specs, then I would check the hdmi cable your using. if your using a newer 4k monitor or even 2k monitor you need to use a hdmi 2.1 cable with the 30 series card or a display port 1.4. I have ran into to this issues with customer who used older cables but more so they run into no display output. If all that checks out then I would download heaven bench mark (link below) and run a stress test with it. Check to see if the card is overheating, if it's fine the look at the clocks as the software shows that as well. If the clocks match up to factory specs then the bios should be fine and the card could possibly be faulty. minning bios typically cause performance issues rather then the shimmering jagged lines. hope this helps, sorry for the late response!

@@pronymus806 could be possible, I would try testing it in another system if you can. That would be the best bet. To test the other components, run aida64 it's free for a month but stress test the cpu, memory etc all at once. If you get a hard shut down using that test then you have an issue but honestly I would be leaning towards the card being an issue.

a quick question: i got a used rx570 which did mining and i couldnt get the drivers to load up. I googled and learned that mining cards especially the rx 500 series had their bios tinkered and in order to get the drivers to work, you need to apply the amd patch or whatever. Fast forward, something happened and my drivers got messed up and i can't seem to get it back to how it was. If nothing works, would reseting the bios make is so that every driver version installs normally. The hardware seems to be ok

I would use GPUz to confirm the bios revision to ensure wheather it was modded to minning bios. Techpowerups website has all the bios for most card to download. using gpuz you can get the model an revision. I would try reflashing the bios. It's easy on AMD cards but still risky. Key is to make sure you get the correct revision of the bios. Most time reflashing the bios is the fix.

Hey man, I see you answer alot of questions so id like to ask one. I've got an AMD RX 580 from someone who does mining, but it has VRAM errors on any games unless its underclocked. I checked the chipsets and they aren't damaged, would flashing the BIOS help?

it could, typically minning bios tend to undervolt the gpu and would cause this issue, and when you run a load on the game, the card won't send the require voltage it needs to perform. Most minning cards I use to get that was always the issue and gpu flashing was always the fix for me. If that doesnt work then the vram could of degraded. Luckily AMD is pretty easy to flash. Key is to make sure you get the exact bios and revision for the card.

have you checked the temps, usually an issue like that is either a temp issue or psu issue. if the the card is overheating due to bad thermal paste and or pads it will do that, I would then do a visual inspection for shorts breaks or burns. GPU could help the issue as the bios does tend to get corrupt, but I would start with temps, then do a flash and if it's still not working maybe try the card in a different system.

i would lean more towards a software driver issue. Did you use DDU to install the drivers. If it was a bios issue then it would of crashed in heaven too.

not really. flashing is for corrupt bios or custom bios for better oc's. I would check the contact with thermal paste to see if it made good contact. Also how was the thermal pads. If there broken and dried that would be the issue. most over look. What kind of card is it and when you say high temp, how high you talking about?

Yes, I have found when upgrading the bios to a different variant you do need to uninstall the drivers prior and reinstall them after due to the computer having it configured for the original card. you would need to either use the igpu from the motherboard or and second gpu. You would use the main gpu to display and use the software. Then you can select and flash the other gpu.

Hey DLM, I've got x2 EVGA 8800 GTS's of the exact same model. However one of the vidya cards has abnormal behavior. Light amount of artifacting on immediate startup/while browsing BIOS settings. Post BIOS - after Windows boots, any and all artifacts go away completely. However, the GPU refuses to utilize graphics drivers & runs at a scaled down resolution. Attempts to inspect the card with GPU-Z results in the program crashing immediately, so I can't grab the BIOS information. Any tips how to proceed from here? Debating on getting a USB BIOS programmer.

usually when it's that far it, their is no bringing it back. Not being able to utilize the drivers and it not being detected your not gonna be able to flash it. usb bios programmer may do it but I think at that point something is fried.

@@DLMtechgarage Thanks for the quick response. I'm gonna try running NVFlash first. Hopefully it doesn't crash. If not, I'll solder on the BIOS chip from the functional card. If nothing then, well, I already saw some worrisome signs of liquid damage on the PCB near the 6 pin PCIe connector while I had it torn down. So that would be my next likely suspect. I'm headstrong to get this dated card functioning for my retro PC. Either I break it further or fix it. Will be good practice either way.

maybe the power supply, def check the temps. I would run a stress test like aida 64 and see if it crashes under load. typically if it's a hard crash its a power issues, flickering could be hardware. if its flickering under prolonged load then you can rule possibly temps or cpu.

could be a power issue. I have heard that some models of the 750 ti require more power then others. make sure the card is good. update the dell bios, try disabling secure boot in the bios. I have heard those two to help out.

does it need flash or is after flashing it, it takes and still does not work. if it's not flashing then you need to go by ther serial and part number to match the correct revision using gpu-z, if it flashes and still does not work the chip could be fried. outside of the method in this video not sure of another way of doing a flash.

@@DLMtechgarage I see, Flashing doesnt do anything literally it has different VBIOs in AMDVBFLASH RX 570 Sapphire has E353 while RX 570 Nitro+ has E363 vbios, thus systemID mistmatch. I think chip is fried and also the other bios is not working, it only works on performance mode. So i need to find another bios chip right?

Need a little more background. how does the card run? does it crash when playing games? does the drivers install? Also is aurous the only program you are using to see the clocks. I would try heaven bench mark. It's a stress tester and shows the clocks etc... if the program crashes are freezes under load then their is a good chance you have a hardware issue with the card. A gpu flash could be the easy fix or it might be something on the board.

I think you might be the guy than can help me sir, I think I might have f'd up. I have a small 2 rx580 rig, i have been using AMD radeon software to undervolt and oc the cards, and so far everything has been going great, until I started to get curious about "Memory timing level2" i applied changes to one of the cards with the level 2 and screen froze, I had to restart the pc and now only one card is recognized by the radeon software and the miner, it shows up in device manager but has a yellow triangle exclamation mark...do you think this bricked my card? do you think i need to flash the bios? ...I'm soo bummed out right now, hopefully you could help.

typically when I see that issue a bios flash is the last resort and can fix it. just make sure you have the exact same bios it has which you can use gpu-z to verify the revision. When you have the yellow triangle like that it typically means the bios have been corrupted.

@@DLMtechgarage I got home and was looking at it a bit more, it says "windows cannot load the drivers required (Code 31)" i was gonna try and roll back the driver, you think?

I run into that when I have downloaded the wrong bios, you need to find the exact version to do the flash. use gpu-z and it will give you the correct number to match up and download.

@@DLMtechgarage ty but i've noticed that my rx 580 had 2 bios and the second one work well. So now i have a gaming bios (more like a stock bios) and a bios for mining if i ever want to mine ( i got the GPU from a ex miner)

Hey friend. I've recently gotten ahold of a RTX 2070 Super. Works fine, only when I try to install drivers it black screens. Might it be a BIOS issue or a dead GPU? I have nothing to lose with it, just want to get it working

that tends to be the issue and a bios flash has been known to fix it, did you try using DDU to do a fresh clean install of the drivers. I would try that first then do a bios flash, also check the temps, poorly done thermal paste can cause instant temps to rise when installing drivers.

@@DLMtechgarage Did a clean flash ut was unsuccessful. What I have noticed is that the temps are unreasonably high for a card that is idle and barely functionating on a driver that is installed incompletely

@@DLMtechgarage oh and also, sometimes it will boot on a default 800x 600 res, with the drivers being incompletelly installed just so the pc can recognize it but not le it work fully. It will always boot in safe mode or without drivers

@@CyBeRnetX1 you might need to open it up and check the thermal paste and the pads, I would do that before bios flashing, drivers do put a load on the card as it is the way they initial the card, what are the temps?

hey nice video man, just a question! My 3060 is turning on and shows in device manager yet when i download updates to driver nothing happens, i get the code 43 error and in task manager it doesn’t pop up any idea what to do?

could be a bad bios, or card. run gpuz and see if it shows the memory and details of the card. if it is not showing anything with that software it could be a bad card.

I have a strix rx460 that acts really inconsistent. I’ve been able to get it to work twice but can never recreate the conditions to get it to work. Mind messaging me if you might know any ways to help. Payed for over Facebook marketplace to try to build my first pc cheap. I knew what I was getting into but I had hoped for better that essentially a doa card.

what psu are you running with it. I have found that inconsistancies with gpu crashes can be a voltage issue. If the pci-e power connector is not getting enough voltage it will do werid things like that. for example, a power supply claiming to be 700w may not be true and may have low voltage rails, this usually happens with cheap brands that people never heard of. Also you may have a power supply with not enough juice , for example some websites claim a 450w psu is good enough for this gpu but that was when cpu requirements where not as demanding, I have found that 600w is what you need to run this gpu with most cpu's. Hope this info help.

@@DLMtechgarage I’m running a Corsair cx650. That actually reminds me as this being my first build I’ve found some inconsistencies with the connections. Meaning not all of the plugs have pins in them. Didn’t know if that was normal or not.

@@nicholaspushic4191 thats a pretty decent power supply so I would imagine that may not be the culprit. try a differnt pci e slot, reseat the card a few times as it cleans the pins. also the next variable would be what are the temps? if the temps are good then a bios reflash would be my next try.

@@DLMtechgarage ive done literally all of that sometimes ill get it to show sometimes I wont. ive even finally gotten it to turn on and I left it for three hours idle with no issue, then randomly itll turn off. after messing with it all this time ive gotten to "play" a game 3 times and all three times the computer crashed and wouldnt show picture no mattter what I did. But when I have it on cpu ram and gpu hit 4,15, and 3 percent max. Other than gpu everything is new. At this point im pretty sure its doa but the person I bought it off of is set on its a perfectly good card. im to the point its doa.

usually to fix that you have to use two video cards and do it using cmd commands and a different software when their bricked.

@@DLMtechgarage Yeah i know, but my gpu got bricked so hard it doesnt show up as an adapter anymore. I tried the 1x8 pin shorting method but all i managed to do was create a mini fire on my gpu. Ill send it to a repair shop but i think my rx 580 is done for. Funny thing is i got the bios from sapphire themselves. I should sue or something huh. Rant over have a good day
