GPU/PSU Coil Whine... 8 Months Later

I recorded the first few days of graphics card coil whine and also the power supply unit noise. And then again after ~250 days. I think it got a little better?

My 1070 did this very minimally and my 3080 now does this a lot but now that I think about it maybe it’s the psu. I used to have a rm1000x and still got coil whine so I don’t think it makes a difference. I am not sure what causes it but I get the feeling it’s the billions of transistors now shoved into the same space as when it was only millions.

Undervolting has helped me reduce mine. I had an old PSU that would stop any coil whine as its a PSU issue.

I have the same sound with 4070 Ti Super and Chieftek 1000 W Platinum, but it is intermittent in nature and has constant intervals of buzzing and silence: five seconds of buzzing and one second of silence. The buzz goes lower under heavier load (lower FPS too). The sound may or may not appear from day to day.

The powercable was not fully in and it triggered my coilwhine on videocard. When i pushed it a bit better the whining got lower in volume. I think I will return my psu but also check with different power slots in the house.

I've heard that looping stress testers or benchmarks for a couple hours (it said like for 8 hrs btw)decreases coil whine and I've seen some people that have said it even got rid of the coil whine do you think it would work 🤔 I've also seen evga support team telling people to try it.

After a series of upgrades (GPU / RAM / SSD, followed by a new wireless card and HDTV monitor), I had an annoying noise that seemed to surface out of nowhere only when playing games. It sort of varied between a high-pitched whine and static-laced buzz, but like your problem, varied depending on what I was viewing in game. I can only venture a guess that it improves or worsens as refresh rate hz varies vs alternating current hz. After over a year, I discovered info about ground loop noise and realized my entire entertainment system gets its audio patched from my monitor. So I installed an inline ground loop noise filter - it WORKED! No more noise. They're cheap, so I think it's worth a shot.

@@gsxr1000jt The TV, or GPU? GPU was an ASUS Tuf Gaming GTX1650 Super 4GB OC. The TV I was using is a 43" Toshiba FireTV (Amazon). Just replaced the Toshiba with a 55" Sceptre and replacing the GPU with an RTX3060ti shortly.

I also have coil whine on my Gigabyte RTX 3070 Gaming OC. Never had it with my GTX 1070, but I'm starting to think that my 750W PSU might also not be "up to scratch" to handle this card, especially with only one cable from the PSU running to the GPU. Using two separate GPU cables to my PSU does make a difference. I can still hear it, but the only way for me to "eliminate" it was to downclock and undervolt my GPU to reference speeds as this an OC model. Once I've done that, the coil whine is gone, plus my card runs cooler. I'm tempted to buy a new and stronger PSU, but will give it some time, maybe like yours with extensive usage it will get better too as I've only had this card for about 6 weeks now. Will see if I can borrow a stronger PSU from a friend to test with, but for now, I'm happy and as you say, the audio from games drown out the noise, although I pacified it nicely with undervolting and downclocking.

The fix is a material in bobines for fix the sound, but you loss the warranty, when disable the gpu and psu the same. I have the very same psu Thermaltake Smart M 850w and a evga 2070 super (before I had a zotac gtx 1080 mini). I got the 2070 from a friend who said that it had a very strong coil whine (he had a corsair ax1000 I think). Same card, mounted on my pc and it's deadly silent, not even a sound coming from it, the coil whine comes from psu. I even got the psu open cleaned and inspected from a psu expert who told me that components are visually perfect with no leak in capacitors. So, I guess it's just a matter of luck about wich frequency hits wich component first and if it enters resonance/vibration or not. It could be fixed with a new psu or...maybe not

Not sure if this will help you, but I managed to reduce my constant coil whine by uninstalling the oculus rift software. One of the services in that application was causing this constant coil whine in the background while my system was idle. After uninstalling the software my coil whine was gone entirely. I am currently using the RX 5700 XT from Gigabyte.

@@gsxr1000jt Yes, You need to go into windows services and stop the service manually. I posted about this on the oculus forum a while back when I solved the issue. I will copy and paste the post for you here: Hi. I own a Gigabyte RX 5700 XT. Recently I found out my GPU was starting to coil whine during idle conditions when I installed the Oculus App. It took a bit of fiddling around, but I eventually found out the OVR service was causing the problem. This service runs automatically whenever I open the app. Unfortunately, it also runs after closing the Oculus app too. The only way for me to stop this service was to go into the services window and stop it manually, otherwise, it would run in the background indefinitely. Hopefully, support could fix this bug so I don't need to manually stop this service every time I close my Oculus app or better yet, reduce the coil whine while the service is running in the background.

Got Gigabyte Aorus extreme waterforce rtx 3080, it has water cooling, but the coil whine is terrible.. it happens when the card reaches 40C , but most games runs on 1440p 100hz ultra settings that produces only 34-38C

Same thing happens with my RX 6750XT. The first day I didn't hear any sound coming from the GPU and PSU. However, a day later I heard a slight buzz/static sound coming from my GPU during boot up. I've also tried to undervolt my GPU in the AMD Software adrenaline edition and during the undervolting the sound was high pitched, plus a similar sound like a cable is hitting the GPU fans. The GPU has 2x8 pins and I've connected the GPU with one single PCI-E cable 2x6+2 pigtail connector. Could it be the cable? The PSU in question: MasterWatt 750 80 Plus Bronze Certified ATX PSU

The last 5 years, I have a Corsair HX750i platinum PSU paired with a GTX 1080. I never had this whining noise issue. Suddenly it started and sadly it's not just noise. My PC randomly restarts when I play games. Temperatures are fairly ok for GPU (50-70 C) and CPU (32-65 C) based on the log at the time of the restart. I don't know why this happens. All GPU and windows 10 drivers are up to date but the computer is just not cooperating anymore. If anyone has any idea or experience on this, please enlighten me.

That sounds like a power supply issue. I had the same problem when I upgraded cards but that was a matter of the new one needing much more power - your PSU’s performance/efficiency may have degraded enough with age that it cannot provide enough or consistent power. I’d test the machine with a different PSU and see if that resolves the issue. Good luck!

@@patrickbc8649 It was not the PSU because I replaced it and the same happened again and again. The GTX 1080 FTW from EVGA does not have a sensor for measuring memory temperature. I believe the temperature of the memory goes too high even though the processor of the GPU is at 60C (which is what is reported on the computer). To resolve this issue without stressing too much, I reduced the memory clock using the EVGA Precision XOC software. I took it down by 500 Mhz and the VRM is not overheating anymore. I also contacted EVGA and they sent me for free the EVGA Thermal Pad Mod and the installation Guide for my GPU. Why this start happening all of a sudden I do not know. But I will open the GPU, install the mod, give it a good clean and test it again.

@@tycho7006 Thanks for the tips. My system consumes maximum 320 W when gaming. I replaced the PSU and the problem persisted. I resolved the issue (for now) by tuning down the memory clock of the GPU. The EVGA GTX 1080 FTW does not have a temperature sensor on the memory and it seems that the memory is overheating. Why this happened after 5 years of use, I do not know but the GPU needs a small surgery and clean-up for sure.

@@Joerooe Undervolting and underclocking =/= performance loss. My XFX RX 6900 XT is undervolted with a slight overclock. I get the same performance or better for less power consumption and heat. Where's the con in this? Dunno why people think that the moment you hear "undervoltclocksomething" and they imagine how someone is buying RTX TITAN and makes it perform like a GTX 1060.

Coil whine appers strong in Tes Online Morrowind at 300 fps, when vsync is not activated. But vsync is activated the sound is less audible, for exp i sad. In the witcher 3 the coil whine is more audible.

i have an open back headphone and can hear the coilwhine, trough the case, through the headset when the music in game in silent. the coil whine is louder then all of my 9 fans combined running at 700rpm each

I think you are having coil whine from both the GPU and PSU, is because you connected your GPU's two 8pin cables WRONG? 10:37 you should use two separator 8pin cables to connect to the GPU rather than using one cable with a two-8pin splitter. The power of a two-8pin splitter is 150W max + 75W max from the pcie giving you a total of 225W max for your RTX 3080 - BUT 225W is NOT enough for RTX 3080! I guess this is why you're hearing the coil whine because both PSU and GPU are struggling transferring 225W+ power in some power-intense scenarios (when you looked at some scenes with more 3D models in the game, GPU power consumption went up while the power load on a single cable is too much, so the coil whine became more obvious) in the game. TRY CONNECTING THE TWO 8PIN CONNECTORS ON YOUR RTX 3080 WITH TWO SEPARATOR CABLES FROM THE PSU AND SEE IF IT IMPROVES.

While 2 power cables are better than a daisy chain one, the RTX 2070 Super from Gigabyte can run with no problems with just one, especially since there is enough power from that PSU on a single rail. He connected the pins wrong? How is that even possible? The "pins" (I assume you mean socket plugs, but I bet my ass you're gonna call that a typo also) can only be connected as designed, since they are shape oriented. You can't put them in any other way besides how they fit, unless you have brain damage and force them in (and even so, they will not stay in, because there is a clamp on top of the GPU power socket which must also be fitted in). Stop spreading bullsh*t if you have no idea what you are talking about.

Changed to a 1440p gaming screen and the buzzing sounds started while playing. After little bit research on the web Im starting to think this phenomen is normal. Maby it has to do with the electric and the vibration the current make. I heard something about tighten backplate on gpu. I will try to change to new 2x8pin connector and see what happens🤷‍♂️

I think coil whine is to be expected with these cards. I have the 3090 Asus TUF OC and in some cases when loading into a menu screen where FPS skyrockets to 1500+ fps is when I start to really hear it!
