I remember being in like the third or fourth grade and all my friends were swooning over the likes of nick carter and Johnathan Taylor Thomas but I was both living and dying for Travis barker. I would ask for blink posters for Christmas that my bedroom walls would be peppered in and I remember getting a famous stars and straps hoodie one year (before you could just buy everything on the internet) and crying for hours over it, I even took a week off of school to grieve the first hiatus blink182 took in the early 2000s lol but swore the day they returned I would see them live, which I did, and Travis came out over the crowd while playing his drums. I’ve still to this day never cried so hard in my life, the hoodie incident didn’t even come close to comparing. I started playing the violin and piano at age 5 because of Travis. I started playing drums in our junior high school band because of Travis, one of my first tattoos ever was the sheet music for “I miss you - we can live like jack and sally if we want” solely because it was one of the only songs at the time Travis helped write the lyrics for and I love the nightmare before Christmas (maybe cause of Travis I can’t even remember) and Tim burton. I’d say 85% of my identity growing up was because of him. And his ideals really shaped who I am as a person today. They say never meet your hero’s but I can honestly say, he lived up to my completely unachievable expectations and even exceeded them. I’ve moved past my superficial love for this man that sparked inside of me so many years ago and it’s grown into pure respect and admiration.
