GQ gets to know Carl Lentz, the man who brought Australian mega-church Hillsong to New York City. Watching Pastor Carl tromp around onstage before 4,000 hipsters in Chelsea boots-saving souls with the gusto of a televangelist but the effortless cool of the guy at the record store-it’s easy to see how one might be sucked in by Pastor Carl’s charisma.

I agree he is not the best representation of the true Christian faith, but disregarding and judging someone because of their social class or economic class in unbiblical, and just as bad as saying “alarm bells ring when any pastor of a church is a poor peasant” stop putting so much emphasis on worldly things, and what other people have. Pay attention and put emphasis on what they say and how they preach. Putting people down because they are rich or poor is disgusting to me.

This is a perfect example of how the church has not transformed the world but the world has transformed the church and the church has conformed to worldliness. Never compromise on the Gospel of Jesus - there is a cost to carry the cross and discipleship in Jesus requires sacrifice. Carl Lentz lifestyle and expenses speak nothing of Jesus's way of life and that of his apostles. Go google the extravagance of Carl Lentz.

If the gospel ever gets watered down, you've compromised. There is a way to get anyone and everyone to come to the truth without tainting the truth... I personally don't think that helping people feel comfortable to step foot in a church is watering down the gospel. He was preaching the gospel in this video, saying that "Jesus is the only way, and that you don't need anything else in life except Him". That's uncomfortable for a lot of people to hear. Their style brings people in, but it's their dependency on Jesus that is the ongoing sustenance.

Hackin Nuts Have You Not Read Hebrews 8:11? The Word "know" in Greek indicates Intimacy as well as the Context. Secondly God had Angels Already to serve Him but He created Man in His Image...this is often misunderstood but image in context refers to man having dominion and also The New Covenant Believers are made Sons of God by Adoption ( Ephesians 1:5) indicating God was Interested in Family...that's why you can see the reflection in Humanity....Father and Son.( picture of God the Father and Children of God)Marriage ( picture of Christ and the Church).....yes we serve but we are Sons First....Romans 8:14 indicates Father as Abba( that's Daddy) so you need to read the Scriptures and seek understanding not religious assumptions

When you take the lights, cameras, music and stage away what will the people do. This is my fear for hillsong, do people go for jesus or do they go because of the community and event? Its not just hillsong, mega churches around the world are focusing way too much on the music and looking cool and small churches are now following suit. If you put the word out that there is a meeting of prayer and worship but with no names on the poster, how many would turn up compared to if you put Hillsong United, Bethel, Passion etc... on the list of "acts"? The bible warns of such churches, these churches need mega prayer, their potential is huge, if they relied on the father rather than how the world perceives them they will produce good fruit.

You should watch the video again my brother. Really LOOK at the video. Stop intellectualizing it, and just look at it. I understand you looking to the word for direction, but I'm not sure this is a conversation that needs to be had. however, I wont overlook your sentiments. It definitely makes me a bit skeptical at times, so I'll definitely pray about it because I go to this church. but in reference to that, It's hard to look at what Pastor Carl Lents is wearing, when youre looking at what he's saying. For people my age, 18-25, his content is very relevant. He speaks on how to exist in this world, and how to live for God while also being a light in this world. College for me was and is challenging, and Its great to have someone who understands that and can make it personal by preaching on it. You have to think about how many people he is going to be able to touch just by having a video feature in GQ. That in itself is a blessing. :3

Tenley terrell ummm...so why did Jesus hang out with prostitutes and tax collectors? we can't judge a church for loving people, can we? :) unless we can point to how this man and his church are contradicting the Bible, I'd say we need to give them credit, cos a lot of other churches were giving Jesus a bad rep. At least, people feel loved. Love reels people into a church, and then the word convicts them. Not condemns...but convicts :)

The thing I worry about with this, and with any mega church, is that the church is Christianity, not Christ. These people go for the environment, and not to be closer to God. I may be wrong, but it seems like these people are not going out into the world and living a truly Christian life. I'm sure some are, but these sorts of churches make it easy to love the music or the cool laid back atmosphere without loving our creator. I also worry that these churches become the people's identity, not Christ being their identity. Again I've never been anywhere like this, so I may be wrong, but that's what it looks like.

Same here. At the moment I am not part of a church but I'm hoping one day I will be. If I was the sort of Christian who relied only on a church then my faith would be dead, but the centre of my religion (and my life) is our Father who exists even when there is no church.
@vicd1359

Solomon Umlah yes that is very important, my church at the moment had been falling apart and we have noticed that only those who truly went to church to worship God stayed while many others who went for other things left after becoming angry over trivial things. I go to worship god and I also go because I'm in America and I have the privilege of going to one freely. In places like china many have needed to create secret churches even underground. But yes if you rely solely on the church for your "relationship" In God then you are definitely dead spiritually

My name is Byron ,i live in Cape Town and ive seen so many huge "Churches" like those of Benni hinn and Joyce and TD jakes ..and many more..I looked at Hillsongs as just another huge church ...yes...i love their music ...a lot actually ...sooooo I needed to find out about this church...and i typed in The Truth About Hillsongs .. this was the first and only video i clicked on ...as i was watching,i was expecting anger ,was this a money making church ,but what i did find without knowing...Love ...the more i watched ,the More LOVE filled my office ...Jesus was showing me that He is with Hillsongs and i wont find sadness or hate among them...and then my tears started rolling down my face WOW ...was all that came out of my mouth ...That alone explained it all...Its Not About the Church at all...Its About no other...But Jesus the Christ ... Jesus Jesus Jesus Amen

We need to be like Christ and not follow false prophets .. the best time with the Lord is early am when he calls you.. when you are most tired and he knows this .. that's how you get to know Jesus .. its wonderful that many people are seeking the Lord but this church is not where you will find him .. Our God is peaceful and he is in the most holiest place .. churches should be as holy

Actually, you're wrong. The Bible commands us in several instances to judge but judge with righteous judgement. Check John 7:24 ; 1 Corinthians 2:15-16 ; 1 Corinthians 5:3, 12 ; 1 Corinthians 6:5 ; 1 Corinthians 14:29 ; 2 Corinthians 11:1-4 ; Ephesians 5:11 ; 2 Peter 2 ; 1 John 4:1 ; Revelation 2:2 and 1 John 2:18-20, for example.

Hello Kay Kim I don't think he's a false prophet. Moreover, there are so many people who speak ill of him. Just see the number of videos on KZbin alluding to his being an agent of the devil. It was the same in Jesus' time. So many religious people (read Pharisees) spoke bad of Him, yet so many people always followed Him about. Jesus' drawing crowds didn't make Him a false messiah, did it? The people Carl Lentz is reaching need to be reached for Christ. Amen.

I've been to Hillsong church in Perth and they're all lovely people there. There's no watering down of the gospel. There's no trying to become like the world. They aren't trying to be like a nightclub as some have suggested. They are a church like any other foremost. They just praise Jesus louder and more passionately than anybody else. If you're going to condemn them for this then I feel sorry for you. God has blessed them and they're winning souls for him. There is a great revival at hand and I for one am joyful with the amount of our youth giving their lives to Jesus. I pray that Hillsong critics open their eyes and see how truly wonderful God's will is being made manifest through Hillsong ministry. Shame on those who are judgemental and resentful. For those traits are not of a true Christian. I will pray for you all. God bless you.

Outside the _One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church_ there is no salvation. The Road is narrow and suffering is something we must not escape, for Our Lord Said, _“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?"_ *~ Matthew **16:24**-26* *This man might speak some truth, but much of his message is clearly not in line with the **_true_** Gospels of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.*

This is the most christ like church ive seen in a long while. Everyone is allowed to have a relationship with christ. It's not up to you or me to decide who is worthy to be in his presence or not. That is one thing christians do that makes them the opposite of what christ stood for. Even the majority of so called "Christians" in the comments who are already judging these people for how they look and the conceptions they have about them, that is not a christ-like behaviour. So busy judging others that they forget its not up to them to decide who is worthy in the Lords eye. Its God who decides that. Nowhere in the bible did christ judge someone for who they are. He allowed them to decide whether to change or not. He never preached at them and made them feel bad like the way so called christians nowadays do. I like this church. A church that doesn't make people feel weird for who they are or make then feel less. And it's sad that so called "christians" have an issue with that. What is more christ-like than a church that welcomes people as they are? A church that promises not to judge you? A church that doesn't ask you to pretend by dressing different than you usually would and covering up your piercings and tattoos before coming into their house? A pastor that doesn't pretend to be holy or perfect. What is more christ-like than that?

The Scribes and Pharisees considered Jesus was a problem for the same kind of reasoning - he hung out with tax collectors....he stopped to talk to those who were considered scum eg The Samaritan woman; crowds thronged Jesus, and they were not necessarily members of the religious establishment, in fact the religious establishment of the day did not feel Jesus at all, but those who were outcast were touched and changed by him. When the world is affected by your preaching, maybe because it is reaching them where they need to be reached. Maybe Jesus is doing what he always has done through those of us who dare to allow Him to be as unconventional as He always has been, and the world reacts, because He is compelling like that.

this video is so hard to watch. To see a man living a double life, it is easy to see why so many people were deceived by him.

There are churches adapted for everyone. You have yours, and they have theirs. Respect that, you don't see them disrespect you.

These aren't churches... these are social clubs.... and they used the Bible to make them believe in a permissive God, a God who allows you to be unholy.

Romans 10 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3 Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.

God is moving through his people at Hillsong, thank you for not being a condemning church but for being a “Come as you are” one. They are not only respresenting God, but RE-presenting God to those who have been told they weren’t good enough for God or that God is mad at them.. God isn’t mad AT anyone, God is mad ABOUT them & will leave the 99 safe sheep to find the 1 lost sheep that needs saved/rescued. Thank You Jesus!

I believe it if Jesus came to walk in the flesh during this Century we would totally miss him. Just like over two thousand years ago when they had no idea the Son of God was walking the Earth a lot of the people that were plagued by a religious spirit persecuted him completely blind to what they did. Even to this day they're Israelites in Israel who still don't believe Jesus came in the flesh. Because of the religious people and how much they persecute Hillsong Church, it is evidential and safe to say that Hillsong church is doing something right. We have to be careful how we judge any church and understand that we can be just as blind as the Pharisees were in their time to the Son of God right in front of us.

Jesus being rejected and persecuted was bound to happen (read the book Isaiah) and u think they’re doing fine? Well yeah, their church is always full. But all these people like it because the message is so sweet and cuddling and that’s what people want, sweet and nice messages. They don’t stand for biblical morality they deny to preach certain because of the fear people leave them and stop going their church. So what they do is just add a touch of worldly culture into it so young people thinks it’s “cool”. Jesus is not cool. he’s our savior and holy. They enjoy the music and the sermons cause it’s sweet. But where’s harsh truth?

For those who love to place a label of "Prosperity Gospel" on churches and preachers, you don't realize how prosperous the gospel is. The gospel is the greatest prospering any human could ever encounter. The gospel changes our whole being and life for good so we can experience the love of an amazing and good God. We can have a personal relationship and become heirs to God's kingdom if we live righteously. The gospel is prosperous. God gives good gifts to his children. He blesses those who are righteous and live in love.

I used to go to this church all the time when I was younger and struggling with alcoholism. it was such a beautiful place and I couldn't remember the name of this church for the dear life of me. Defintely wanting to go back.
