Quick video that demonstrates the GR-1's live sampling capabilities. It records, applies granular processing and plays back directly. Input sound is streamed from a laptop and input via a USB sound card (a cheap Behringer UFO202 in this case). All granular synthesis options are in effect, and allow stuff like scratching, time stretch, comb filtering, harmonizing (using the play buttons and sliders). This is a remake of an earlier vid, but with proper audio.
Music by Holon (Mark Rydyger) / mark-r-3 . Track "Awake To A New Reality". Many thanks! Make sure you buy this artist's album. It's terrific! holon-subatomi...

Fan-tas-tic to see this piece of gear. Just discovered it and never was so excited for a piece of gear. Well, not often that much. Begin 2000's to 2009 I made shitloads of tracks in FL Studio, and my favourite plugin was.... the Granular synth! Made totally out of this world soundscapes / pads / fx with it, it was just so versatile and I even gave indivual drum sounds extra character with it. Was looking around for a polysynth, more into hardware at the moment, and getting a bit bored after too much KZbin-analog-polysynth-action I remembered granular synthesis. "Is there any hardware around??" And YES it can be played on a keyboard too!! I think this piece of gear (and likely some likewise ones) will be more and more popular getting used by electronic musicians over the years...

probably the only hardware sampler out there, that's really worth buying. Octatrack is cool, but not polyphonic and really not intuitive. Maybe an Akai S612 .... ?!? Crazy how long it took to have useful machine like this. Thanks to Tasty Chips.

I mean can it really not be a granular sampler ? Like you can't just use it as a sampler without granular right ?
@nicholasmarshall6361
@nicholasmarshall6361 3 жыл бұрын
@@jimmypierson1980 sort of.. you can get the original sample to play if you dial in the grain size, density and pitch but it's really more suited to abstracting the source rather than re-triggering the original sample. You might want this AND an old school SP, or Maschine or whatever..

does the GR-1 sample in stereo?
@earx23
@earx23 6 жыл бұрын
When playing it randomly pans a mono sample to stereo, depending on settings. Everything loaded or sampled is internally stored as mono. But stay tuned for updates.
@earx23
@earx23 5 жыл бұрын
@sbmphr If you want software, that's fine. If not, tell me how to pan 1200 stereo grains in real-time on embedded hardware.
@earx23
@earx23 5 жыл бұрын
@sbmphr Yes, that's a good proposition actually. The next problem is quickly encountered though, also the RAM requirement is doubled. Hence, we think it's wise to wait until the hardware is properly upgraded. There are SBC's that offer 2 or even 4GB RAM these days.. although they are not cheap. And there are compatibility issues to consider. But anyway.. some day some day..

@TastyChips
@TastyChips 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the interest. We have gotten a lot of comments about the price. but for us it's absolutely necessary to maintain this price point, both to sustain ourselves and to develop our product family further. For you as a customer it's a different story.. One person may choose to buy, while other just use their ipad + 10$ app, or uses cracks on their old PC. We're ok with that. The GR-1 was developed because generic platforms (pc, tablet) don't have the best human interface.. The GR-1 offers direct, clear and very precise controls for the most important parameters, and this extends into easily making drones all with the on-board controls.

It’s really cool and I appreciate what it can do.... but you guys really need to step it up: 1. Stereo Sampling 2. Filters... where are the Filters? 3. Way more LFOs and EGs for shaping 4. A Mod Matrix 5. FX Beef it up and if it costs 2-3k then so be it.... but it needs so much more.
@TastyChips

1. Considering it.. in a follow-up. maybe 2. Already there. Multimode, in fact. 3. This is what the 2 CV's inputs are for, EG's.. maybe in a follow-up 4. Already there. 9 sources x 11 destinations. 5. Already there. Please take some time to read the manual for the full specifications in the latest manual: www.tastychips.nl/gr-1-downloads/

It still doesn’t have EGs and LFOs which are the most basic building block of synthesis… “CV inputs” a “solution” for that - not a chance, that’s completely inflexible to force the user to go analogue for such a basic synth feature imo.
