can it granulate the incoming audio signal in real time without recording?
@TastyChips4 күн бұрын
Yes and no. You cannot in monotimbral mode. Open up the other layers and setup layer 1 as a looping buffer. Layer will now granulate the incoming sound while also recording to buffer, and layers 2,3,4 will keep their samples while also being able to be played live.

Fantastic... these are genious creators ! ... fantastic times they could do a hardware module independently. Imagin if Dr.Chowing creator of FM could have done this without having to go through a majour brand........... Ps: does it have parmetric eq per layer ? because granular sounds are so rich in frequency content, when you start layering you need to make some sounds thinner. You would need 4 parametric plus high pass and low pass if possible.

I really would like to see such a comprehensive demo with samples and phrases of natural recordings of instruments or vocals. Using already heavy processed synth and artificial sources somehow doesn’t show me the real sonic potential of this beast. Just a request from a potential buyer. Looking forward to hear more demo’s. Cheers!
@TastyChips3 ай бұрын
Good point. We'll consider it, and perhaps some buyer with a YT will do it for us. Some of them do amazing work. However, the GR-MEGA is not designed to be a "realistic" time stretcher or autotuner. It's meant to be _transformative_. So, input your natural samples and they may come out scattered (subtly, or totally), or ringy (using spectral mode), or like a paulstretch ambient track. That's what we went for.
@Bouwput3 ай бұрын
@@TastyChips of course I understand that but if I want to improvise on piano and send it through a Mega I need to have an idea of how this will work out and how far it will go. If I just need weird sounds I program my Hydrasynth. Your device is a ultimate metamorfoses machine between real world sound and outer world noise. This is what I am looking for!

Wow, amazing device! How does the pitchshifting work? Does it just slow down or speed up the samples similar to the Logic Sampler algorithm or is it a more complex one like the Izotope Iris Radius RT?
@TastyChips3 ай бұрын
Good question. There are two ways in which the GR-MEGA can do this: spectral, or granular. I'm not familiar with the Logic Sampler algorithm, but I can say this: the GR-MEGA is not intended to time stretch vocals. It can stretch drumloops, but granular stretching causes the typical granular scattering sound. Spectral mode is more smooth, but has "ringing". Izotope's stuff is probably more cleaner... but also, our stretches are all real-time, and polyphonic.

Hello @Tasty Chips, Do you confirm us the live sampling can use any of the 5 granular engines? And if we use the live sampling feature, is it possible to hear the external input as loops synced to the MIDI clock? I'm thinking about using the GR-Mega with other hardware gear and send the sound of one of this gear (let's say a synth for example), live sample it on the GR-Mega but adding the sound of this synth as loops synced the MIDI clock of all gear connected via MIDI including the GR-Mega and an external sequencer like an Elektron Syntakt for example. The loops I'm thinking about work this way: playing a few notes while recording them on the GR-Mega, the GR-Mega stopping the recording automatically after x bars (and not a precise number of seconds or minutes like you say on the video) and playing the sound recorded automatically after these x bars like Ableton Live works with audio clips when we record audio on the clip view you know. And if this automatic play is possible, that would be on this recorded sound (of the first few notes played on the synth) that would receive the granular treatment of the GR-Mega of course. And after a while, replacing this recorded loop being "granulized" by a new chord on the synth still stopping the recording automatically after x bars, playing this recorded synth chord directly and being able to "granulize" it instantly. Hope this long explanation is clear enough to have your answers (2 questions).
@TastyChips3 ай бұрын
Yes, live sampling can be done in any of the 5 engines I don't know what you mean with "external input as loops". Do you perhaps mean that the _recorded_ audio can be looped using MIDI clock? Yes, it can in 4 of the engines. Sampler mode does not "scan" in the same way as the others. Well, yes, you can record audio from other gear live into the sample buffer and process that in real time, Dry/Wet mix it, and apply MIDI sync to many parameters. But you _cannot_ do synced loops off the _incoming_ sound.. Only of sounds that are already in a buffer. However, you can finetune your buffer size to effectively _be_ the loop. The MEGA cannot stop audio recording after a number of bars, unless you make the MIDI device send a REC STOP CC. We can try to add such a feature in 1.1 or 1.2. I unfortunately do not understand the request in the last paragraph... Could you perhaps elaborate with some concrete examples? Maybe there are some KZbin videos you can link?

I have to say... this UI brings the worst out of the UX from a DAW VST. My suggestion for a next hardware design: Use more button combos for building muscle memory and not rely on the UI too much. I own the previous GR-1 and I hope to see some UI/UX improvements
@TastyChips3 ай бұрын
There are button combos for a lot of things, such as entering the menu tabs (menu button + 1..8), or adding mod destinations (hold button + turn knob). We're adding more combos as we go on. Do you specifically mean "not relying on the GUI too much" instead of "not relying on the UI too much"? We did listen to what GR-1 users said. The most common things were: more contrast in the GUI, and better file management. The GR-MEGA has so many physical buttons (what we like to call the _physical_ UI), because the most used features should be up front. That's now the case. You actually don't need to dive into menus that much. The big exception is doing a lot of modulations in your patch.
@microfx3 ай бұрын
@@TastyChips yeah the big problem is with not having only endless or motorized faders/pots that you always hit the wall... like I change the patch and none of the pots show the right value. Mod matrix is something I would make 100% with a combo... (like in most VSTs possible) ... so press LFO1 Button and then turn any other knob to link those.
@TastyChips3 ай бұрын
@@microfx The first use case. Yes, the pot thing is real. But varies per user. We have both Feel functionality and Pickups implemented. Which makes it almost as quick. And yes. You can hold down [LFO Select] + turn any knob and it gets assigned to the mod matrix. Standard hardware synth feature.

It's lovely to see that many hardware granular synths options these days. Would love to see a showdown between this, the GR-1, 1010 lemondrop, Tempera, Microgranny, Texture Lab, and maybe some modular stuff. And how people ctually use these, and it which context (yeah pads of course, and soundscape/ambient but what else?). This one is probably the last boss of them all 😮
@Eli_B30003 ай бұрын
I have almost all of those, some good, some eh. The GR-1 sounds the best, Lemondrop second and portable. I'm waiting on a Tempera, so I'm hoping that combines a lot of features I'd rather have in most cases. The GR Mega looks really cool but it's massive. I don't think I have room for a box that big. That spectral sweep is insane though, almost worth it just to do that with the slider.
@remka20003 ай бұрын
@@Eli_B3000 I only have the Lemondrop, which is a heap of fun, not *that* expensive, but I still don't really like the USB power which can easily get noisy AF. Want the GR-1 but cannot really justify its cost in my current budget... The more options, the better!

one can watch the existing reviews and get the impression of the showdown proposed. there's quite a few more h/w then the ones you listed, even before we turn to eurocrack. but there's no boss, the top ones are all different, the lesser ones are all limited. and each can be used and abused so differently by different players...
