Believe it or not I actually wrote a paper on this series for University for my Academic Culture theories. I used the dynamics of of Bells Hooks thesis of Dominance in regards to family dynamics, and Althusser theory of Interpolation to extrapolate why the section of the story behind Air that ONLY surounded Misuzu, Yukito, and most importantly Haruko, was actually very well done and why I think it should have been the prime focus of the series and thus given more run time. The character development and progression of relationships between these three, how it ties into the supernatural elements, and how becomes a parallel for emotional/mental deterimental cycles was so smart if you knew it was there. therefore I think this part should have been worked into the plot over the rest of the episodes instead of lumped into a few all on their own. (The movie did a better job at making the spoilering origin of the conflict Misuzu's history project.) I think the movie tried to take a stab at it too, but it lacked the scenes that show Misuzu's personal efforts for emotional progression and so if this series ever had a remake I would pray they centered on that next time. As for the side character they did only serve one benificial prupose I can think of- and that is demonstrating Misuzu's efforts to reintergrate herself into society and what lack of presence she had to overcome in order to achieve that- regardless of how the ending pans out. If you downgrade Yukito from role of protagonist, and give it to Misuzu instead, I think you may see Air from a completly different angle. Especially since her whole goal was about " Making friends." I think if you cna look at it fomr this alternative view the series may appear more clever it first appears. That said it was a serious tear jerker and I bought the dvd set

I'm one of those very few hardcore Air fans and it remains my favorite anime to date. However, I know it's not for everyone. The story and all the details can be quite confusing with only one viewing of the series. Lots of things are hard to pick up on at first and require a revisit, an act which not everyone is game for, especially if you JUST watched it. I personally had trouble understanding it as well, but through taking the time to really think about it, hear others' takes on everything, and finding out some of the minute details through re-watching some, things managed to kind of click. However, even through finding out what's really going on, it's a little much for some people. For example, if you think about the fact that the restrictions and logistics of time and whatnot are pretty much non-existent in Air (Sora is able to exist in the same universe as Yukito even though they are the same spirit, and Kanna and Ryuuya's reincarnations as Misuzu and Yukito are able to exist in the same universe as those kids on the beach who were reincarnations of their spirits as well, blah blah, etc., etc.), that's kind of a lot to make sense of and accept because it by nature does not make sense. So yes. The series is not for everyone as it's just... a lot of work. It is also, I agree, far too short, causing some issues. But it will always have this place in my heart (can't believe I really just used that expression but it's true). It was one of my first series as a newly devoted anime fan and motivated me to watch other series as well. I love the music, the artwork (which again isn't for everyone), the overall vibe... It's really very calming and pleasant to watch, something that's nice for someone who has, in the past, struggled with severe anxiety issues. Anytime I felt anxious, or just needed to relax, I'd watch Air or listen to some of the soundtrack and poof, fuzzy-worried-feeling-in-head disappeared. Not sure how I can justify writing this much and can't entirely say why I've done so as I typically don't care to give out opinions and whatnot, but... Such is life and all that jazz. Great review -- it's nice to see people these give an opinion, especially on the Tubes, that isn't crude or demeaning to another's in some fashion or another!

You see yukito left Misuzu alone back in episode 7, he regretted that mistake and wanted to start over from the beginning of it all, when he first met Misuzu, and was reincarnated into the crow, but in the process lost all his memories of his past life but also saw himself in the past, think of it like he traveled back in time and is also watching himself from the sideline, but if you have any other questions just ask and as always peace✌🏻️

Jay Duron Still though... I think turning him into a bird was a bad move because it turned most of the people off and they were confused just as I was. Anyway... This anime is no where near as good as Clannad or Kanon.

Looking back on this I'm seriously shocked this was done by KyoAni. In 2021 to me that studio has a very distinct art style (see: Houka, Violet Evergarden and A Silent Voice) and the trinity is very different from their modern works.

I mostly agree with this review. But let's be honest, after the 7th episode, this anime is getting weird. I really felt like I was watching to another show : most of the characters has vanished and most of the sudden developments are coming out of nowhere. In the end, the whole story is not coherent. A great disappointment !

I had the same problem with Air. I had already seen Clannad and therefore the character design and animation of Air looked like shit in comparison and yeah the sudden plot change and the lack of explanation ruined this show for me. One Day I'll play the visual novel to get a proper look at the story and I'm sure it will be loads better but I guess they just didn't have enough episodes to adapt it properly. Maybe one day they'll do a remake like with Kanon.

Actually Air was the first Key show I ever saw and it was way back in the days where I was really new to anime. I still have a big affection towards it. I believe your issues with the plot may be due to the fact that you watched the masterpieces Clannad and Kanon first :) Air has a lot more symbolic feel to it. Yukito doesn't just become a bird for no reason. If you notice in the first half of the show this bird appears in some seemingly casual scenes. Yukito (as the bird) is there to sort of "retell" the story from a different perspective. This is to show how the mind and feelings of a person can transcend in any form through time. To me this is something I always found very fascinating. Like how close can a person be to infinity when his deeds are spoken through the words of others and his memories too can continue to exist. The idea of this, even though presented as magical, it can be viewed as very much real as well :)

I still don't see how it was confusing; I've rewatched AIR many times since my first watching and even the first time I wasn't confused but then again I make a habit of watching anime with magical themes and anime that involve reincarnation. okay so remember the story yukito was always told as a child? well the guy from medieval times had a child and wanted that child to find and save the princess because she couldn't move on and would keep reincarnating until someone could save her. misuzu is that princess which we know because in one scene where she was in pain she said her wings hurt. hmm what a strange thing for a human who's never had wings to say. unless she has before. and yukito gets a mysterious scar in one scene and suddenly remembers something that never happened. only it did happen; it just happened to him in another life and his past self was trying to remind him of his mission. he doesn't remember until it's almost too late and then he makes a wish to have never left her side in the first place. but he already made the choice to leave her before so he goes back as a bird and stays with her until the end. now the bird part I didn't really like because I shipped misuzu and yukito and they can't be together if he's a fucking Bird but there it is. I mean technically they couldn't be together anyway because T.T MISUZU!

For me the saddest one of the trilogy is Air, second Kanon and last Clannad (Not After Story). Inbefore Spoiler Alert!. Because in Clannan anybody dies, only 1 girls that is in a coma and everyone got their problems solved. In Kanon 1 girl dies, but isnt the main one and everyone got their problems solved. But in Air the main girl dies, the main guy dissapears from the world before he could fully tell the girl how much he loved her and he couldnt do anything to solve her problem and last her mother watch her die just when she and the main girl were starting to understand eachother and live happily. You just got to resign to her faith and atleast get a bit happy about the other girls even though that Missuzu suffered more than the main girls from Kanon and Clannad... Its so unfair... T-T

As muddled as the plot is in some places, the thing I love so much about this anime is the setting. It's just so beautiful and serene with the clear blue skies and Misuzu's hair blowing in the wind, and the music just adds to that. Add to that the slightly melancholy tone, ohh it just massages my heart. Never found anything like it.

Haruhi isnt Key, just got animated by Kyoto Animation. As for your ranking list, sadly Little Busters is last with angel beats as they were rushed or skipped over SO MUCH of the content. Otherwise (for me) it goes:After Story, Kanon, Air, then AB! and LB! tied as they cut out so much. If we're going to talk about the games, LB Jumps up to 1-3 depending on your taste, and then you have to factor in all the games including Rewrite, Planetarian, One, Moon, and the rest (soon enough we'll have the AB! vn though, cant wait). Otherwise i disagree with your ranking.

I can consider Angel Beats as an 'honorary' entry in the holy trinity, just because it's the same writer, style, and overall structure. Beats made me cry hard, and I'm pacing myself so that I can still cry for Kanon and Clannad.

gottta say, I totally agree with it "being cut short." I own all the "holy trinity" except for "Clannad" (which is not easily found for a decent price, so I have to watch it on...less than legal means). This includes (the missing piece of the graph) "angel beats," But I digress. "Air" is...alright. I mean if you're looking for a moving story, it could do it for you, as there are a some bawl like a baby moments (though those are few and far between), Overall, I think re-watching "Clannad" is probably the better option, especially the after story arc which, oh my god, (no spoilers, but seriously I cried in front of my roommate at the end. I should have been embarrassed, but I didn't give a crap about that. I was way too moved by the story.) Anyway, back to the point, it should have lasted longer so that the story could have been fully fleshed out instead of rushed at the end. It's okay, but definitely the weakest of the "holy trinity."

Those are the harem animes. They have one guy that has to chose one love out of three or more girls. But that's only a portion of romantic animes. There are some w/ good realistic story lines, and coherent characters that are actually good.

I'm kinda sad that the heian period episodes apparently don't get that much love :/ I remember watching Air for the first time and blatantly skipping those episodes since I wanted to know how the main plot continued. But having rewatched it over and over again (and also bawling my eyes out like neither Kanon nor Clannad could accomplish, yes they both had their very sad moments but for me the story of Air kinda totally hit me, also I don't really care for Ayu and Nagisa as much as I care about Misuzu...) I found that i thought the Heian Period plot to be the most fascinating and tragic part of the story. Misuzu mentioned several times how she had dreams about flying and a girl in the sky and that's what's tormenting her and making her forget how to live later on in the last episodes. The story about Kanna tells us about the origin of the nightmares Misuzu has to endure bc it was with Kanna that everything started. Since then 1000 summers have passed and each time the reincarnation of Kanna (in this case Misuzu) had to die bc of it. It was mentioned as being tormenting to the reincarnations since Kanna's supernatural soul was too big and too much to bear for humans, therefore they started forgetting how to live. I don't remember why Yukito turned into a crow but I still found the second half of the story to be great and also as sad as the rest. I literally cried my eyes out every episode. I watched it for the first time around 10 years ago when I was 11-13 years old and had just gotten back into anime. So for me it of course has some sentimental value, that's why I'm writing this comment in the first place. Anyways, I just wanted to explain why I personally think the Heian period plot is very important to the story :))

I understood everything, also the second half....and i cried so so much. Especially because it has an unhappy ending, what you don't have often. I haven't watched Kanon, but the ending of Air is even sadder than Clannad.... I don't really like visual novels that much and it always takes time for me to identify with Moe characters ( well I'm a girl and not the target audience ) so I wasn't to sad, when the first part was over. The second part was better ( for me ) The animation. I know how this is animated and it is freaking hard! Once you draw for some time and give animation a try, you will realise how great this really is. I'm in love with it.

Halfway through, and there's already a problem... @9:14 I can see how that can get confusing; however, judging by how you were talking about how "it made little sense," it seems I have to explain some of it: Our Orange-haired MC, I'll call her Mia for now (Forgot the names lol), is the Princess in the Medieval arc, but reborn, and Mia's wanting to go up to the sky is b/c of her wanting to see her "mother" again (she died, fyi) so Mia believes if she goes up to the skies she'll meet her mother (Medieval) again. Our Grey-haired MC, I'll call him Kiri, is the reborn protector of the Princess Mia, and him turning into a crow is difficult to explain, but from what I understand, it's b/c it shows he's nearly done his time, and is nearing rest from protecting the princess, reborn or from the past all this time. As to why the crow thing, I believe it's stand-by until it is time to once again protect the Princess, but keep her company until then. (Ik, 2 different reasons, but meh). Looking at it this way, it (may (somewhat) make(s) sense..?

I just got done finishing Air, after having watched first Clannad and then Kanon, and I have to say that i hated it. I went into it thinking it I would be moved the same way Kanon and Clannad affected me, but it only left me with a feeling of "What was the point of me even watching this anime?". I think the problem was the lack of episodes, but the ending just made everything that happened with the characters pointless. Yukito ends up as a bird and the girl in the sky is still there, still sad. We all know what happens with Misuzu, and that just gives me such a pissed off feeling. Maybe its just my taste of what I want in anime, and I can easily see how people would love this anime, but this is first anime I have ever watched that I have hated and know for certain that I will never watch again. In the end it really just seemed like all that happened with the characters was pointless and that the cycle will keep repeating itself, which did not leave me satisfied.

If you do not understand the concept of reincarnation in Shintoism or Buddhism, then the main plot may confuse you quite a bit.

The one most outstanding piece of a visual novel => anime I've seen so far has got to be Angel Beats! Clannad does bring one very high up and jolly at times with its outstanding moe and comic relief moments and extremely low with its saddening points; but probably due to my bias, I was completely blown away and was left bawling completely and constantly throughout at least 3 consecutive episodes. It is like when ever I hear just the opening, I will shiver a LOT. Great, concise review though.

I'm actually really curious of what you think of the movie Arkada. Personally, I prefer the movie over the series but I think the best way of watching it is like mixing the show and the movie together. So basically, watch the beginning to middle of the movie and then switch to the show for a bit but then go back to the movie to finish it off.

Amagami SS had like 6 girls but each girl gets her own arc but after it they loose all love in the main character and the plot resets. I love Amagami SS.

is it weird that i watched clannad first but liked air better? it mightve been the connection of mother and daughter that got me so riled up. i got why the medieval part was there but it probably shouldve started from the beginning but it didnt seem out of place to me. there were already supernatural things in the show and tbh yukito had to get out of the way for their relationship to come into full fruition.

I think it's refreshing actually, and shows objectivity. I come to find that with time the latter shines through, after the "wow" factor wears off from watching a good Anime, leaving you like "OMG... that was the bestest/saddest thing EVARRR!" After time elapsed, in my humble opinion, Kanon was not only the best of the trio but also one of the best Anime's I've seen period. And I viewed it last of the 3. IMO it has so many other things going for it the other 2 don't besides just "feels". It is consistently engaging from episodes 1-24, with no luls, which I can't say about the others. I didn't find Clannad as good after the Fuko arc (episode 9), or Air all that good period to be honest, like you. But I couldn't put Kanon down, like a good book. And naturally it's treated like the red headed stepchild of the 3... I enjoy that fact rather than having it frustrate me. I rarely comply with the status quo or crowd.

I love this review! And I agree with pretty much everything you said. Like you, I found Air enjoyable regardless of the sloppy second half and confusion. The first time I heard Tori No Uta, I was hooked as I had stumbled upon the Air OP when I was searching through Clannad videos but didn't end up watching Air until recently. ^_^

You should try the movie made by Toei. they cut most of the moe moment, the crow thing and 2 of the girl to make a far better version of Misuzu story. And like Clannad the movie it was directed by the god Osamu Desaki(Ashita no joe, Versaille no Bara, Black jack, Space adventure Cobra, Remi nobody boy, the Snow Queen, In the begining the bible stories, King Leo)

in air their are 3 arcs dream summer and air the characters Kano and Minagi did not get their own arcs their stories are in the dream arc and they couldn't drop the 2nd half because that would mean skipping an entire arc

Yea, this review was about right. I liked it but... the whole crow thing was bad, just bad. The whole "I want to be your mom" thing was pretty good, pretty feelsy, but that was tarnished due to the fact that I still hadn't gotten over what had happened to the main character/ why that had happened.

Just finished watching Air the series and the movie, and, for once, the movie version is A LOT better than the series, being more succinct and enjoyable. The relationship between Haruko and Misuzu isn't as forced or rushed and the other minor characters have been shelved to concentrate on the main story, which isn't as nearly as confusing. Of the Holy Trinity, Air is definitely the weakest (the best being Clannad IMO) although I did like Misuzu's cute nihaha and gao, and Haruko as a character was a lot of fun.

Two essays in the last 7 days, one on a audio analysis of the electric swing musical genre, and then a second on comparing The Hound of the Baskervilles with the BBC Sherlock adaptation. This week I have to learn how to use FL Studio and create a 2 minute musical piece with it. Next week I have 3 final exams followed by presenting my 4th year thesis to the graduation committee. All the while working on the 100th GR Video and trying to make sure it`s not going to be shit. So yeh, tons to do :)

I like how Toei is involved in the Key Trilogy too... and is the buttmonkey of the ordeal. Clannad's film, Kanon's first anime adaptation, Air's film... there were bad.

You have to read a Visual Novel to understand the adaptation, there's no way around it. Of course you can just watch the anime, especially if you don't read vn, but you never will really understand it like it was meant and get confused... Especially the bird-part is very well written in the vn, i never watched the anime but i can't believe it worked like in the vn...

Aunt please! Everyone seems to insist that Haruko is Misuzu's mother. She's not, she couldn't be much older than a college graduate and it's depressing to think of her as a single mother to a high schooler at that age. While Key thrives on depression, I have noticed that they're rarely mean spirited about it, much less outright sadistic.

It is a very well done vampire anime with great artwork and soundtrack. Although gory it shows how the sanity of people dwindles in the chaos. Please consider and great work!

The voice acting in the dub is good it does have one of the big hitters like Vic and Luci Christian both of them were great in the dub in my mind, animations good the characters do look very cutie and it might throw some people off because of it, agreed the intro music is catchy and the ending was well very very sad to watch.
