Sometimes it makes more sense to watch anime in English. This, Cowboy Bebop, Michiko & Hatchin, Hellsing Ultimate, and Black Lagoon are good examples.

+Crono I just had an argument about this with a friend. He said it makes more sense to watch Baccano! in english, becouse its in a western setting, it just fits the story better and these are just cartoon characters anyways, so its not like they have real voices (like in the case of dubbing a live moovie). I understand this, but saying that it "makes more sense to watch it with dub" is still biased. No matter the setting, this anime was still written in Japanese. The words given to the characters were japanese, the english version is translated from that, so no matter what, in a sense it will always be a "secondary" version. It can still be very good, but in such circumstances its foolish to say that it has more right to exist, then the japanese version. After all it all comes down to preference.

What's character development got to do with "focus on high school kids nuff said" Durarara!! covered the entire cast and all their individual background stories very well, what makes Durarara!! brilliant is in fact the characters (AND their development) and story arcs that is unique and boasts originality. It also had great social commentary and felt they nailed the look and feel of an urban lifestyle and depict the city of Tokyo City in a excellent manner - How normal-everyday day life intertwines with the underground movement. Both Baccano! and Durarara!! are good solid shows. I cannot believe anyone who can honestly say they watched every second of Durarara!! and say their was lack of character development, that is what it is well known for.

I understand not having Rachel's identity in the OP, though. God, you totally hit the nail on the head on why this is my all-time favorite anime. BEAUTIFUL VISUALS. BEAUTIFUL SOUNDTRACK. A story I couldn't stop watching until the series was over and it was 6 AM the next morning. Great dub VA. Wonderful method of storytelling. The most lovable characters. If there's any anime that can beat this, I'd LOVE to see it; because honestly, I've never found one that made me laugh, cry, and cheer within the same 12 seconds -- not since this.

Chandler Prunty I'm going to have to watch this because I've enjoyed durarara, which is by the same studio, and from what I've read it is similar with some of the things that annoy me about durarara cut out. I'd say as far as lovable characters I think my top anime is cowboy bebop, which also has my favorite soundtrack, but the visuals may seem slightly dated. I think the visuals are good though. The show has style.

Baccano: literally the first series I've bought in its entirety. Since then, I've added Batman, Korra, Cowboy Bebop, and Gankutsuo to that roster. It was, oh, a little over a year ago. I was at Naka Kon 2014, perusing the merchant section, when, lo and behold, there was this neat little case. I looked at the retailer and asked "how much". "40" the vendor replied. "FORTY" I thought, panicked and downtrodden, "that's most of my spending money". I walked away for a few minutes, pondering the situation. Then, with a feeling of purpose, I walked back, slammed the money on the table, and bought that show! It was the least I could do, since I had previously watched the series on a probably illegal streaming site.

And holy shit is this a tonal whiplash at how much has changed in the over a decade. I don’t know if I will find a show that will top it for me as this show hits nearly every single thing that gets me to raise an eyebrow and say, ‘This sounds good’. The biggest thing missing is time travel, but even there is story structure plays with time enough that I still feel satisfied there. Such a good show that I’ve watched more than any other just for the fun of it. I don’t normally rewatch things, so high praise indeed.

My favorite anime, tied with Trigun. They are... different from each other. Your complaint about the theme has several counterarguments. The reason Rachel didn't appear is probably because of time constraints, or they wanted you to think she was Claire Stanfield. I thought she was Claire when I first saw the show, until she ran into the rail tracer. They didn't give names to either Claire or Rachel in the opening, and I think that was to avoid spoilers. Anyway, great review! The first one I saw!

I honestly have never understood people who prefer dubs over subs, but don't really care as that's said as my personal Opinion. I have/will always prefer subs over dubs in every single case (other than maybe rare exceptions like the OAV, Dead Leaves & a couple Studio Ghibli films; but I still prefer the subs in those cases also..). Why do I feel this way? Because the Original spoken language (with subtitles for foreign viewers) is how the original art was Meant to be by the artist(s)/creator(s). I don't even mean just anime alone, I mean live action films from Japan, France, or Anywhere. I always have just seen it as: That is the Original art as it was made. Sure this series & So many others have stellar dubs. Some like Studio Ghibli have A-list American film actors; but it's just My Opinion that I will always want subs. I will counter myself with a few certain series', & a Perfect Example is the anime series Beck. That series consists of lead Japanese & American characters. (Again, this is just one example of a few others I could list..) Many of the American characters speak in broken Japanese, in an often purposely funny or moreso Realistic manner. Which was that series intention. I wish more series that are in FACT Japanese art, that have American characters (or Any other countries, such as German; which N.G.Evangelion demonstrated very well at points..), simply have those characters speak in their language & have subtitles for whatever countries' viewer is watching. Baccanro! takes place in the United States & as far as I can tell has NO Japanese characters; only Americans. So I understand why Glass Reflection & Many other critics/viewers prefer it in American language, especially considering how excellent the voice actors are in American. (from the little bits I've heard, I myself watch it in Japanese with subtitles, as the creators made it so. I realize this is an ongoing debate that will most likely never end or ever be "won." I think the viewer & their opinion is all that really matters. Mine happens to be whatever the ORIGINAL countries' artist(s) created it as. Back to my example of the anime series Beck, I think that's a Perfect example of characters & storyline that feature BOTH Japanese AND American characters; which are both subtitled/spoken appropriately. I also feel in cases like Beck it makes it even More interesting & realistic culture-wise. And as I said this doesn't just apply to anime, it applies to any live action film from Every country on the globe. I have a list examples all day long. I truly love Glass Reflection's honest/fair reviews (if I agree or not always; that's just opinion on art..). But I think the whole sub vs. dub aspect in Any review shouldn't be put on the same level as animation, sound, story, & so on. (or even really a predominant point in reviewing an anime series/film..) Then again that's just my Opinion of the ongoing debate of subs vs. dubs. Again there's some amazing dubs out there.. I just have Always preferred the original artist(s) language in any film..or hell, even Any other artistic mediums; such as Music; for a good example. I'll use an example of the massively popular German industrial-metal band, Rammstein. Du Hast (arguably their most mainstream/1st well known song..). The vocals sound Beyond Ridiculous when it was imported to America as "You Hate." (though they sound perfect, in the native German language..) Same as their 2nd big global single, "Engel," sung in American as "Angel." Ugh, that was even worse & cringe-worthy. While on German bands, the lesser known German band, Tokio Hotel (on a side note: wtf happened to them??!), Could actually pull off both the original German vocals & still actually sing in American as well wonderfully!! (imo) but that's a Rare EXCEPTION. Just as Studio Ghibli has did in the U.S. as far as anime dubs, in some cases..but Still; only my opinion. Another example in foreign music, Most have heard a couple huge singles of (all the mass controversy surrounding them aside), look at the Russian female pop duo TaTu. They're HUGE debut single, "All The Things She Said" (in Russian: "Ya Soshla S Uma") sounds excellent Also in English. Yes, the art was originally written/sung in Russian, which I prefer; but Do love the English version also. A lesser known example would be the Ukraine group, Vintage, who I'm a personal Huge fan of; as far as that musical genre. (on a side note I love music of Most all eras genres, countries & do not care if they're mainstream or underground or anything in between..) Vintage's big singles such as Trees & Mikki Mouse sound truly excellent BOTH in Ukraine; as well as in English. So I say it's really up to the viewer/listener/ect. I could get into Japanese or South Korean artists a various musical genres & do the same type comparisons..but then this mini essay would turn into a full-on book. ha. My Point here is, though whether it be music, film, or in this case, anime (of any country on this planet..), most all of the time I still say the ORIGINAL country in question always sounds the best. Even if another language (such as American.. or any other..) does a Truly stellar job translating or not. Therefore I feel Any anime reviews, specifically Dub vs. Sub deal, shouldn't Ever be taken into account in the Overall Rating/Review of an anime series or film. (Even though I may have a few rare personal exceptions, once again it's just opinions..) But as far as this whole short essay (that I felt like writing..) here.. I must repeat for the 100th time: In the end, it really is All Only Opinion & this was simply mine. So, anyone who actually read this; take it easy & please just enjoy anime & ALL Art the way You wish to!! -deadpopstar

Fun fact: Did you know that the creator of Baccano has confirmed that Claire Stanfield is as strong as Ronnie Schiatto, also from Baccano, and Shizuo Heiwajima from Durarara, and that they're tied for the third strongest character in the entire shared universe between Baccano, Durarara, Hariyama-san and Vamp? This, in turn, means that Claire and Shizuo have the same strength as an OMNIPOTENT, IMMORTAL DEMON, and that even then, he's not the strongest in the universe.

@odonnellshane7710 жыл бұрын
OK I really don't want to start a sub vs dub argument but I think the dub suits the show better. In the same way someone could argue that Azumanga Daioh is better subbed because of the Japanese pop-culture references made in the show, Baccano's setting, characters and references are more fitting with an English dub. Plus the voice work was excellent, especially using accents that blend in with that time period. And don't just state outright that "Sub wins by default", the way I see it, 60% of anime is better subbed, 35% is equal both ways, and 5% is better dubbed like Cowboy Bebop and Baccano! That's my opinion anyway.

a lot of people said good things about the dub for this but i still couldn't stand it, and switched to sub after the second ep. the dub just felt way to hammed up and cheesy, especially jacuzzi and ladd who were absolutely unlistenable for me.
@snoopyt711 жыл бұрын
I agree, the sub is much better.
@TargetHippo11 жыл бұрын
Completely agree, the accents are clearly fake.
@armsofundertow9811 жыл бұрын
TargetHippo The dubs are made by funimation, an American dubbing company. The anime is about American mobsters. Please, tell me how in the hell the "accents" could be fake -_-
@TargetHippo11 жыл бұрын
armsofundertow98 A lot of the characters have stereotypical New York accents. It's way too gimmicky.
@daresmet492011 жыл бұрын
TargetHippo As opposed to engrish? A lot of Japanese voice acting in anime is extremely campy except you do not see it that way because you are not native to the language.
@chickennuggets3537 жыл бұрын
I think the beauty of this anime is that while it is confusing at the start, you can't help but watch more because of the characters, catchy music, and the intriguing storyline. So in the end, when all the plotlines diverge, the payback is mindblowingly satisfying.

I'm afraid I just don't agree with Arkadas dub/sub logic. Overall, dub is worse than sub in anime. American voice acting is appropriate, no, good with American voice acting. I would probably hate adventure time if it was dubbed with British accents (this proves my lack of bias, as I am British myself). I'm afraid, for me, the japanese are better at voicing their own animation, and vice verca for America. I don't think the Baccano dub is bad, but just because its good, doesn't mean it's "dub all the way". The japanese is, in my opinion, better. This is someone who has enjoyed both dubbed and subbed anime talking, by the way. Don't get me wrong, there are some anime that are better in dubbed because 1. They are good and 2. The japanese acting sucks eg. Hellsing Ultimate. (Not just because some of them are British, by the way. It's just the only anime I haven't enjoyed in japanese in my life. Sure, Cowboy Bebop's dub is good, but it's only good for Americans. (Again, I am NOT saying American voice acting is bad, just in this case it is, just to clarify). The japanese voice acting is just as good if not better, as to be expected for their own anime. I did in fact watch and enjoy Cowboy Bebop in dubbed, so I am not biased. I think if you enjoy sub better than dub in general, and can bare to read the subtitles unlike some, then I suggest watching this, and any anime, subbed. Just because the dub is good, which is unusual, the japanese is usually better anyway (save Hellsing, that just sucked in japanese). I have repeated my points just to make them clear, and to try avoiding a retarded flame war. I am simply saying I think Arkada's suggestion if definitely watching in dub is unfair and is based on opinion, where a good review would normally share the pros/cons of both sub/dub for those who prefer either. Of course I am not a reviewer and am not reviewing Arkada's channels, so I can express my opinions freely. I say this for the idiots who are about to respond calling me a hypocrite for saying Arkada shouldn't use his own opinion. Just to clarify again for super retards: THIS IS MY OPINION PLEASE DON'T RESPOND WITH FLAME WAR BULLSHIT k bai

I can't force myself to watch any anime dubbed, it just feels un-natural, staged, fake. Say what you want, but the original voice actors put in more work....that, or its just the cultural difference, where normal western people don't speak as emotionaly as they do in dubs
@pdddddddful10 жыл бұрын
Trust me the dub is fantastic and feels more genuine because of the accents. I get what you mean some dubs don't flow as well as they should but this certainly does plus there is a lot of emotion in the voices. It's one of the few cases where I would recommend the dub over the sub.
@JandreLom10 жыл бұрын
John Wink Just like Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt the dub added to the western appeal of the show even if it was 1 track minded it was FUNNY
@normalgirls110 жыл бұрын
There's some anime that are better off Dubbed. Inuyasha's dub is really good. Black lagoon's dub is 1000 times better than the sub in my opinion. Panty and stocking Dubs adds more to the jokes which makes it better. And when an anime is more "western" there really is no cultural difference because they don't even mention much of the japanese culture in the anime (black lagoon). But saying all that ,90% of anime I watch is all sub. Most anime just feels better being subbed. And hey, don't knock it until you try it :P
@namjoonssexybrain167910 жыл бұрын
I don't agree specifically with Baccano. The english voice actors are fantastic for the most part. Great accents, emotion in their voices, I suggest you at least give it a look, they are fantastic.

I can't stand dubs, no matter how well they try to make them I just can't stand them.
@HeisenbergBrB8 жыл бұрын
Why? The dub for this show actually fits better to the settings (if you think about it, it would be very awkward to watch a bunch of Americans, French and Italians speak Japanese) and the VAs are amazing aswell (they did the accents just right) P.S: How about Cowboy Bebop's dub?
@jorgecorea75288 жыл бұрын
Truong M Pham I meant in general, every single show I've tried to watch in dub has failed for me, I don't like the dubs, I feel like they lack the emotion and characterization that the original voices give to the characters. I'm not saying that all dubs suck, I just don't like them.
@HeisenbergBrB8 жыл бұрын
Oh, ok. I usually watch anime subbed too, but I will watch them dubbed as long as the dub is as good or in some rare cases, better than the original dub (Cowboy Bebop, Baccano, Trigun, Monster, FLCL...) because watching them dubbed actually makes me enjoy them more

5:01 Here's the thing- I don't think the OP omits characters as a mistake. Rachel, and the Rail Tracer. They are characters that blend in and are meant to be hidden. Huey is not a real character- He is a plot device.

I'm not an avid anime watcher, and I think the last thing I watched was Fruit baskets. I had heard about Baccano! and decided to just watch it, not knowing what I was getting myself into. It took a couple of episodes to get into the flow if the story and I was sort of in shock from all the unapologetic violence, but I kept with it and I'm happy I did. This series was great! Also I agree about dub > sub. Lads voice actor was great!
