I recommend reading the manga while listening to a looped version of guts' theme from the berserk anime ost. It gives a much more immersive feel.

+Thorfax x I like reading the manga with atmospheric black metal in the story parts and when battle ensues I change the music to death metal, and it's fucking awesome. This manga was made to be read with death and black metal as background, and I don't even like that kinda music that much.

Berserk is easily one of my favorite mangas. I read Berserk a bit too early though cuz I was 12 years old when I read volume 13 haha Like that rape part made me kinda scared and I was so caught up in it that i could really feel guts helplessness at that part when his arm was stuck and shit and that made super sad. I was really close to shed a tear when he ran through the woods. Guts will forever be my fav character :) I think I'm gonna reread the series cuz u pointed out a lot of things I never really grasped (cuz I had a hard time reading English back then) Thanks Chibi! You really rekindled my love for berserk! :D

The thing u said about Kaneki and Guts, I love Tokyo Ghoul, but Guts it's on a different lvl of human xD He can't go crazy because he's strong as fuck, he fought since he was a child, he knew what pain was time ago, the smell of blood... And Kaneki just saw pure cruelty and wasn't able to stand to such pain, and turned more cruel to survive.

What is terrifying me right now is imagining the series ending where guts sacrifices his life just to kill Griffith and he goes down in history as a bad guy. God that'd suck. And it practically seems like Griffith is setting the stage for it too.

I shed some tears when I read through the Eclipse. The raw emotion behind everything you've seen built - all the characters and relationships - being teared away in moments. That's so emotionally sick it's almost disturbing that Miura was able to write it.

I've re-read the Golden Age arc at least 16 times, and every time I get to the part where Guts leaves Casca with Erica and Godo, I just get filled with so much sorrow, anger, sadness and rage. I literally will go outside and cream 'Griffith' at the top of my lungs. It's not like it's a tradition, but Kentaro conveyed so much emotion into Berserk that it's overwhelming. I would go as far as to say that not only is Berserk the best manga ever created, it even rivals the works of Tolkien.

One thing about Berserk is that it always leaves me a bit mind-fucked after reading chapters like the ones in Volume 13, I couldn't even finish vo.14 because of it :( One thing I have noticed so far in this manga, is that people snap when life becomes too much for them, and yet Guts even despite losing his friends and having to see his idol fall, plus his lover raped in front of him, while he is powerless and is held down, along with all the other shit he went through before, it takes strength to not lose your mind. After that finding out that your whole life will be spent in fighting various monsters that seek you out, it takes strength to not give up right then and there. To top it off, finding that your child is now a demon and still moving ahead and being maybe ready to kill him, God of destiny beware, motherfucker, Gutts might just break you up. Definitely one of the most deep, well written and remarkable MC's I have seen

A fish can jump out of the water but always falls back in. So imo causality can be opposed since guts and casca survived the eclipse. That could be them jumping out of the flow of destiny unless that too was parts of ioe's plan. Maybe the idea actually has some more fucked up shit for our heroes in store. Like guts becoming an apostle. He's halfway there imo with the beast of darkness being so strong within him.

What if the idea of evil is just creating a destiny for guts, he was always searching for his own dream and when he tought he find it (settling up with caska) evrething broke up. Basically settling up with caska wasn't really in correlation with his fighting nature so he gave him this mad endless fight, thinking after all he will accomplish what he thinks is his dream.

The fairy apostle is based on a moth. (Vampire moth according to certains sources, but there is other sources that says this is another specie.) I liked one thing more about the Dragonslayer, it's that Godo admit the Dragonslayer is a joke of a sword. (Also he states that dragons don't exist so the sword is useless... Then Guts comes.)

It is very philosophical that goes damn well with the extreme art that it comes with... Berserk so far, is the best manga and the best fantasy fiction from the east. Guts is the struggler... pure willpower in its pure definition, bend the rules and fk the world up, that is what berserk is about.

The cgi gets significantly better with each of the OVAs, and the 3rd is generally considered to do a decent job (the only real high point of OVA 2 is that they slipped in an early bird cameo for two characters at the Victory Celebration party who'll be important later...though they also changed some stuff). The tv anime also did a pretty good eclipse...aside for it infamously just ENDING abruptly without any explanation (right before the Skeleton Knight would've shown up) and that being the end of series (Mostly because the Skeleton Knight was completely removed (Puck was also completely removed), so there was no way to explain how he survived the Eclipse...so they didn't bother trying...he just did SOMEHOW and after the credits walked out of Godo's which eventual led into where he was in Episode 1, which was very loosely based on Volume 1). The Abridged Series by Hbi2k is quite good (though it was made back when it almost unheard of for a collaborative effort by multiple abridgers, so he does all the voices, but manages a decent range, and loves poking fun at stuff the anime censored or left out completely from the manga). They also started working on the OVAs as well, with a several of TFS crew and some other good VA helping this time (though only 1 of them is done so far).

I saw someone bring up somewhere that the Idea of Evil might only be half of the picture. What about an Idea of Good? Like a Ying Yang type of thing. Also is there any other form of power higher than the Idea of Evil and the possible Idea of Good; like a God in more of a traditional sense? All interesting questions to ask. Also yea, the religious parallels are interesting because the roles are essentially reversed of who is good and who is evil, though we don't know the end game of the being or beings pulling the strings. Who knows what exactly can be called good or evil here.

At the very least, the brand of sacrifice and the caduceus of the church are essentially the same icon, so it is likely that there is something behind the religion, especially since there are true prophecies and miracles associated with it.

I have the craziest theory of how the series will end. griffith will bring the last humans in the world to his kingdom, sacrifice them and bring the Idea of Evil into the world and the LAST actual human beings will be guts and casca. Guts confronts the idea of evil and has a bloody fight with griffith (he'll find some type of upgrade), the idea of evil will state to him that as long as evil exists, he exists. Then guts realizes what he has to do, he impale himself, dying in Cascas arms the very last human with evil I'm their soul/heart dies and the idea fades away, griffith screams I'm agony and disintegrates to nothing. There's no one left on the planet except Casca and she regains her memory. The end.

I think griffith represent the antchrist, because the antchrist is said to be a person that seems good, and that is a man of god, and everybody follows him as a new messiah, but im the end his a serpent, a demon

You know, i'm starting to worry my comments are TLDR, which is why i just deleted a monster of a post i'd just written so i'll just sum it up as this: The only messianic aspects Griffith embodies are the most superficial, if that. Guts is a far better embodiment of actual divine nature. That's it, not expanding on it in this comment.

Chibi Reviews Oh, don't mind the wall of text, then. One thing that hasn't gotten out of the dark ages, is the general perception of godhood by two elements, Power and Posture. All the while the primary one, Nature, usually gets itself largely ignored. The former are always the flashier and more readily noticeable, but i think in this case, even though the Godhand sure do act the part when it comes to the former two, their nature is unmistakably full-on balls-out demonic. Berserk itself touches on this, though it would spoil you if i said when, but basically, there is a theme somewhere in there of the Holy See focusing tremendously on the superficial aspects of divinity, while being rotten to the core. This comes apparent in the difference between Guts and Griffith. Griffith's dream is getting his own nation. It's an ambitious, tangible, quantifiable thing, and, if i may go a bit further, pretty carnal. Guts' dream, on the other hand, is so abstract he himself doesn't even know he has it. You can't even rightly call it a dream, it more like an impulse, a drive. Guts wants, at all times, to be the best he can possibly be. It seems a humble thing, but it's only as small as you yourself are. In Guts' case, given the strength of his character, it is a drive so tremendous even Griffith can't stand against it. Griffith himself notices this, though he can't really understand what it is. He can move forward if he has his dream to guide him, but Guts can move forward no matter what. His "dream" cannot be destroyed, because it's part of his very nature. Griffith lacks this, and i think that's what draws him toward Guts. It's worth noting that while everyone else stood in awe of Griffith as a figure, an idea, Guts pretty much only cared about Griffith as a person. Yeah, he made reference about how big Griffith's dream was, but that was in pretty much the same conversation that he also mentioned, rather affectionately, how Gaston wanted to settle down an open a bakery, and how other members of the Raiding party, that he knew by name, wanted to do their own thing when the war was over. Guts only becomes unsatisfied when he gets the impression that Griffith doesn't value him the same way, and that's the plane he wants to level with Griffith. Whatever talk of dreams, and things he wants to achieve are just a means to earn his friend's friendship (little did he know how he already had, and then some). The very abstract and unquantifiable nature of Guts' drive is, in my, view what classifies him as decidedly the most spiritual of the two. And in the final confrontation at Windham's outskirts, when Guts is finally focused on what he wants (and Griffith is wavering at the thought of not getting his way), he flawlessly strikes down Griffith in one swing, barely breaking a sweat. Also, if we compare similarities to messianic figures and whatnot, the Messiah himself was a dude that that was pretty humble and down to earth. Yeah, he performed miracles, but he was mostly known for his character. Heck, he even rebelled against the church at one point. By contrast, the immaculate holier-than-thou vibe that Griffith so often gives off, can be superficially thought of as messianic (thanks for that, Inquisition), but if you dig a little deeper, it's more accurately associated with the antichrist. And btw, that is pretty much how i see Griffith. Not saying Guts is the Messiah of Berserk, but he's definitely... something very serious. Can't really think of a good word to end that sentence with.

The only difference between Griffith and guts is that Griffith is aware of his consciousness, while guts basically is just getting dragged on his path. Griffiths dream was not to have a kingdom or to be a king, Griffiths dream was to fulfill his destiny which he was fully aware of which just so happens his destiny was to become a ruler. On the other hand guts destiny is the path of destruction, that is all guts does that's all he is been doing since he was a kid (arguably since he was born) the only reason guts doesn't know what his dream is is because he is not aware like Griffith is. But it is more that obvious that guts dream would be to destroy something. As much as he is not affected by destiny anymore he was for a long part of his life that lead him to become part of the world of the demons. And if you actually think about it that was probably his destiny all along, to become a demon. After all that's what demons are... Destruction.

That is just one of the amazing traits he possesses as an author/illustrator that sticks around for the whole series.

The Hand of God made pretty clear to me that the "God" or the "Gods" in this universe wasn't a shiny example of all of good, and by reading the manga, I realize that this is the last universe that I would like to live, there is no good deity here, only demons, but that doesn't stop humans into believe that there is something good in all this darkness, never the less, they are still humans and human nature dictate their actions.
