Nice video! Because of it's shorter length, when splitting wood with the GB Small Forest Axe, you might want to work from a kneeling position, as if the axe slips, or glances off the wood, then it won't have as much chance to swing down into your leg, but should hit the ground first. You don't want to bury your expensive axe in the ground, but it's better than that trip to the hospital:). Keep up the good work, and always thank God for the time you get to spend in the forest!

Nice review as I have been trying to desiderate between them and really wanted to see them side by side.

Ray Mears suggestion on twisting the head of the ax whilst splitting is a great one to save your blade dulling faster than necessary. Check out his video's on axes if you have not already. Great technique and same peaceful review style. Thanks for sharing!

Nice job son! I use several GB axes here in Canada. You have to be careful with the shorter forest axe. It can be a leg chopper!

hey bud, excellent review, keep it up. Its great to see someone who's realy involved doing the job. Cut down on the walk throughs in the begining and get straight into the review. We want to hear what you have to say, considering its obvious you realy are involved in doing this. Well done. l assume you'll have more educational vids in the future. You are talented and have alot to show the world. Thumbs up.🤙

Hmm... Well as far as i know the RM wilderness axe is a combo of the Small and scandinavian forest axe... So it would fit the purpose! But so would the small forest axe, it is my prefered all round axe.

Have a Small Forrest axe since 20 years. Almost just as new, though heavy use. An axe for life. A cheap axe divided over the years.

I personally like a 3/4 ax.. but where we live.. a large knife will do the job most of the time. Good video.. and solid choices
@Danishbushcrafter11 жыл бұрын
Well, you can defi feel a difference! Both in weight and lenght... But i've went out with the scandinavian one attached to my belt before, without it being a problem :-)

It is a large axe, but with my skillset i have experienced that i can use it with one hand as well. It can definately do other things that just fellling trees, but the SMALL forest axe is what i would take as an allround axe, because the size isn't as much above a hatchet, as the Scandinavian. All the forest axes and hunters axe do a pretty decent job on splitting, i've carved with succes with the small forest axe. Take care Rasmus.

I like this video! I just got one from BladeHQ called a Wetterlings ax. Hand forged and I love it. I just got to use it for the first time this last week camping in Idaho.

Both were bought online. That's a bad idea though, my advice is going to a shop and looking at it and feeling it. Also to check the grain of the handle. I was lucky with both of these though, since the grain on the handles are near to perfect.

Nice axes, could anyone tell me the length from the top of the axe from the poll to the edge?

About the care of your axes. rust is not really an issue, there is a video on YT wheres a guy who losts his axe and finds it after a year.. It was totally ok just needed a little sanding the rust - considering the time and environment it was lost in, condition wasnt crucial at all..

I agree that Gransfors is a great axe but I have a 60cm 1Kg Leonard Muller axe from Austria (with a mirror polished head) which is every bit as good and cost me only E40 (about £35).

does the scandinavian have a bigger head, or just a bigger handle than the small forest axe?
@primitiveskillsful12 жыл бұрын
@Danishbushcrafter but it does the job wery well, its just 10cm more handle, no big deal, it was the only handle i found to buy , btw did you se my comment on trip to lake vid?
@Canadasurvivor12 жыл бұрын
when your splitting wood try not to just simply cut through the peice into the block, once you make initial contact turn the axe a slight bit to either left or right this way the wood splits and you dont dull your axe by hitting the block.
@Danishbushcrafter12 жыл бұрын
@NORTHWOODSPREPPER1 Well, i've never owned one myself, but i have tryed using one, so i think that the work real great, they are light, but the plastic handle is such a huge turn-off for me, in my eyes, a solid hickory handle is the king ;) Thanks for watching bro :D
@BruceNitroxpro10 жыл бұрын
Impressive axes... for the US audience, quoting both cm. and inches would help! LOL I have to take notes to compare with native gear. The smaller (what we often call a boy's axe) one seems to be more packable because its length is similar to other packable items in your kit. I'd have liked to have seen them both being used in finer carving tasks... many people often CLAIM they would be tempted to leave their heavier camp craft knife at home in favor of using their camp axe to carve, etc. I doubt it.
@Danishbushcrafter9 жыл бұрын
Bruce Nitroxpro That makes aboslute sense, and the boy's axe is great indeed!

I usually take a candle and rub it onto the axe head, wipe any excess of and then it's got a coating, i need to find some better solutions though.
@em47034 жыл бұрын
I have a suggestion. CRC SP-400, its a product that I believe contains cosmoline, a military grade rust inhibitor used for rifle kept in humid storage bunkers for decades. Its waxy once dry and I finally had no issue at all with rust even when the axe was wet for days. Smells funny until it dries, but its amazing for the money. Everything else just doesn't seal the pores of the steel enough, even oils or normal wax, rust always win in a few days. Not with this.

I'm guessing you are from Norway? cold weather and 95% boreal forest means big axe is a must. I would recommend you the Scandinavian forest axe. It'll chop twice faster then the small one does ... have fun:)

The American society is resting on former succes, i suspect that to be the reason for poor quality products. Dont get me wrong, there are lots of quality product's in the U.S. Thanks for your comment! Take care Rasmus.

Yeah they are expensive, but you get what you pay for, stupid posting cost is another thing though! :) These traditional quality kind of tools are always gonna be better than the tactical full metal hardcore axes, atleast in my world! :)

That's a shame. Rule no, 1: Don't buy Bear grylls gear in the first place. Just in my opinion atleast. I've seen it fail time and time again. I don't have great experience with removing rust, but try oil and stuff. I would search the internet a bit, and find out how to remove the rust.
