I remember staying up late watching episodes of this show and a few others. I was a young boy then, and would invariably get into trouble for staying up. But this show, and some John Wayne movies influenced me to join the Army. That was late 70s early 80s, and by the mid 80s I knew I was going to join. A friend of mine and I were supposed to join together on the buddy program, but when it came time he pussed out. I joined anyways and went alone. Glad I did. It was the best thing I could have ever done for myself. It taught me responsibility, discipline and integrity. It taught me to grow up. Before I went, I was a lazy, irresponsible teenager punk. By the time I ETSd, I had grown immensely. I didn’t think I’d have to serve during a war, but was deployed to Desert Shield / Desert Storm. I also spent 2 years in Germany, and another 2 years stationed at Ft Carson Colo springs. I wouldn’t trade a minute of it for a lifetime of being that lazy punk kid. It also taught me about diversity, and culture. I met so many people of different walks of life, different ethnicities. It taught me to appreciate people for who they are. That old saying, To judge a man by the content of their character etc - is absolutely true. I met and TRUSTED so many different peoples of color who were such great soldiers and men, and I met people who were absolute sacks of shit. I can honestly say, I had such high hopes for race relations in this country based on my service. And then the democrats fucked that all up in the name of politics and losing just 1 election to someone they ALL used to suck up to before he decided to run. I can honestly say my heart broke for this country as we all watched it burn to the ground in the name of politics. Never EVER thought I’d see the day that WE as American PEOPLE would let a bunch of gutter trash politicians ruin what we had. It WAS getting better. Now…. It’s just so fucked up.

The actors really had to act just like the singers really had to have talent too back then miss the simplicity of the shows back then they really did a great job of it.

Didn't their parents ever teach them to close the tunnel door on the way out? Even Hogan's Heros were smarter than that! 😁

It was their duty to attempt to escape. While it might cost them their lives, for every one that escaped, it took 10 nazi's off the line to find them. This meant that more lives would be saved by the escape attempt than lost. In a prison like that, normally everyone was involved with attempting to excape. They wouldnt have left many behind to be killed in their attempt. "Only a fool" would beleive they wouldnt be starved or tortured. In an earlier episode one of the men was tortured to death.

chris - it took regular infantry soldiers off the line to search for them.

@@dindinprivate3477 It looked like a temporary command post not far from the front lines, (in France?), with a holding pen and prisoners sheltered in what looks like a stable or barn. The Krauts didn't even have dogs, making it easier to make the few miles to the allied lines. Didn't look like Gestapo to me, either. And we can't forget that it was a TV show!

No offense, but being in B&W was a huge part of why these shows were so great. Season 5 had good episodes when it went to color, but it wasn't the same.

I much more prefer B & W shows and movies. Because of how lighting and shadows improve the layers in what isn't color.

Kirby (Jack Hogan) with a REAL BAR at 20 odd lbs. for realism. Rest of cast used wood/plastic mock ups. Robert at 67.

When it started filming in color, because of higher costs, the show started filming with 1 or 2 of the main chacters ,another factor was the almighty $$$ that they all wanted not just Morrow& Jason. Saw. an interview with those that played Cage Doc and Kirby it was interesting.

"Hold up everyone... that sounded like a mine blew up. Little John, go check to see if there are any other mines!" And that is what Sargents do. They would have let a PFC do the walk, not a Sgt. or Capt. Sorry, but that is the way war is. Oh, and the BAR man would be near the front... not the back.

The reason the "reporters" are portrayed in the negative was a reaction to the then current press who forgot their job and became propagandists for communism, particularly in Vietnam!. We still suffer from this mind-control even today. "Combat" was the only War TV show actually broadcast to the troops in Vietnam during the war, something unique, and the "anti-war" KGB financed US left howled about it at the time...
