John Wayne was just a war and western actor. He didn’t have the acting skills of Cary Grant or Clark Gable or Humphrey Bogart James Cagney or Gary Cooper et al. Danny Kaye was way better. Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra were a bit better. Kirk Douglas John Wayne shoulda made more movies like “ The Quiet Man “. But he filled two niches in cinema with war and cowboy movies. To his credit he didn’t try to sing in all those western movies like Roy Rodgers or audie Murphy. Just observant and opinionated …

I am re-watching Combat until now (this episode) and beginning to appreciate it very much. And also realized that Combat is not just a TV series and war drama. It is actually a reenactment of many situations that happened in WWII. And you know the writers consulted the technical advisers because of certain "technical" details only someone who had one through the war would know. This makes the show even more true and enjoyable. Plus the great acting from the squad. Truly a masterpiece of TV cinema. The other series I liked was MASH.

The manner in which different camera angles of the same scene makes them seem newly shot for the particular episode(Unless you're watching them one right after the other)Also excellent use of of WW II News reel footage and german and American/Allied Propaganda films. The Budget was about $130,000 per episode, and the producers squeezed every penny they could, but made sure the Quality of the show was always top notch.

@@gnosticmom2805 No, I don't think so... My statement isn't meant to indicate that it infers truth but to point out the actual reality of the situation. Job stress. Havent you met people wildly popular and loved at work only to turn into monsters when they get home? They have to release their pressures somewhere and there are people who make the mistake of releasing it at home. Whole family suffers. What they see is not what the world out there sees. I speak from experience because we grew up in that home environment. My dad was in the military and his job must’ve been hell. Always blew up at home. My folks were always fighting. My uncle too, ran a security agency. He was always giggling and loved practical jokes. His staff thought life at his house must’ve been full of laughter. He was the opposite. You couldn’t talk to him. He was a time bomb with a (very) short fuse. I saw him once yelling and throwing a kitchen drawer. That is a side his staff never saw and may probably not believe. Yes, I understand the possible 2 faces of Vic Morrow.

This storyline about a German deserter reminded me of a magazine article I read many years ago. Toward the end of WW2, US Army units were badly undermanned. One of the causes was widespread desertion. US Army deserters in the hundreds were wandering the countryside throughout liberated Europe hiding in caves, wine cellars, vineyards, barns, attics, basements, brothels, etc. Some were just mental cases who had broken under the stress of combat. US Army units who found them did not detain deserters because they could not spare anyone to guard them. US Army commanders also didn’t want deserters mingling with their troops because it would cause conflict and morale problems so it was “catch and release.” The US Military Police had the responsibility to apprehend deserters. After VE Day, some US deserters who were never caught remained in Europe. German soldiers who deserted weren’t so lucky. They were summarily executed when captured by German forces.

@quentinburns82983 жыл бұрын
@@bob_btw6751. Indeed. In the end, Hans does make the stand for decency as he sees it. I literally wrote that comment as I was watching the show. This of course is a central question in analyzing WWII: Why did such a civilized, advanced, and cultured people go all in for barbarism on such an unprecedented scale? There are all the standard answers, all true enough. But the overall mystery remains. GIs were amazed and the contrast when they crossed into Germany from France (and even England). Germany was more like the US. Hot and cold running water, indoor plumbing. The people, when not displaced where clean and tidy. Their towns are farms, when not destroyed, were very well-kept up. GIs found themselves relating better to German civilians than they did to the French. And yet these same people were the home front for a truly evil empire. Inexplicable to the satisfaction of many.

The fact this show went for 152 episodes over 5 years is pretty amazing. In an actual cinema war movie you have 2 hours with 1 set of characters in 1 particular storyline (An exeption being The Big Red One whose storyline covered about 3 years). But here they had to keep coming up with stories that would revolve around the featured guest character. It was all filmed in CA on studio sets and nearby locations so they were limited to what they could base a storyline on, not to mention budget. How many bridges can you blow up, POW camps to esape from, ambushes to get out of, rescue missions to carry out, and make the occasional "light" non-action episode? And on and on. Eventually even something very successful can finally play itself out. As they say, that's show business.

This is a squad, which (I think) is usually 5 or 6 men. A platoon has up to, at least, 4 squads. 2nd Lt. Hanley is platoon leader. He has a platoon sergeant (who is not Saunders) and each squad has a sergeant or corporal in charge. This is Saunders' role, as squad leader. He's a 'buck' sergeant with only three stripes. A platoon sergeant may have as many as five. He gets his orders directly from 2nd Lt. Hanley and passes them on to Saunders and other squad leaders.

@@denisehorner8448 When I was in JROTC in the '70's, a squad was 10 men. Wikipedia says that in WWII, a squad was 12 men. A platoon was typically 4 squads (3 regular, 1 hvy wpns.), plus command. I wonder what would've happened to a Hans in real life in this scenario: Would he still just be considered a POW, would the US Army induct him somehow -- maybe for intelligence or spying -- or would they simply move him way to the rear, away from the lines, and just force him back into civilian life?

Saunders must be the most decorated soldier in the history of war.

Oscar Jordan hehe, so many purple hearts, the guy probably wouldn't be able to stand up when the war is over!

Interestingly except for one episode s1/e11 (which was actually the pilot for the show), they never mention medals or ribbons. On that one Saunders wears two rows of ribbons including the Silver Star.

Saunders would have been sent back to the states to train other soldiers. He was too valuable with his experience.

I think the music theme is catchy too. I never get tired of hearing it over and over and over. I love it❤. I wish as punishment for taking secret files I wish they would send trump over to Ukraine to live permenently to see how it is to exist there with Russia constantly attacking them. See how he likes it!

A lot of Deutsch soldiers were thoroughly decent, at least on the western front. This screenplay is HONEST. My Deutsch Ami father killed a lot of his cousins in WW2. A nightmare. Barely survived. Treating German soldiers with fairness & respect is admirable.

Sarge mentors reluctant Werhmacht into humanity & his 45cal Thompson instructs the recalcitrant. Sarge carries his "Bawls" in a backpack or they would drag along the ground being so big.
